Effects Of Feeding High-Moisture Corn Grain With Slow-Release Urea In Dairy Diets On Lactational Performance, Energy And Nitrogen Utilization, And Ruminal Fermentation Profiles By Lactating Cows, Braden M. Tye
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The objective of this experiment was to determine if nutrient utilization and energy partitioning by lactating dairy cows would differ in response to dietary corn grain (CG) types [steam-flaked corn (SFC) vs. high-moisture corn (HMC)] and to test if the types of CG would interact with slow-release urea (SRU) on lactational performance and energy utilization. Eight multiparous Holstein cows (32 ± 8.2 days-in-milk) were used in a duplicated 4 × 4 Latin square with one square consisting of ruminally cannulated cows. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement was used to test 4 dietary treatments: SFC without SRU, SFC with SRU, …
"Reasonably Bright Girls": Theorizing Women's Agency In Technological Systems Of Power, Emily January Petersen
"Reasonably Bright Girls": Theorizing Women's Agency In Technological Systems Of Power, Emily January Petersen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A woman’s experience in the workplace is an inductive process into a technological, hierarchical, and often male-dominated system. This study examines how female practitioners in technical and professional communication confront the technological system of the workplace. I trace the forces that contribute to the hierarchy and power struggles women face, I present how they claim authority and agency within such hierarchical and technological systems, and I show how these experiences can lead to activism and advocacy. In addition, my findings suggest that some women leave the workplace altogether in favor of less structured and more innovative ways of communicating about …
The Effect Of Weight On The Perceptions Of And Attitudes Toward Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa, Allison E. White
The Effect Of Weight On The Perceptions Of And Attitudes Toward Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa, Allison E. White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A large body of research has shown that stigmatizing attitudes toward individuals with mental illness are widespread and prevalent. Fewer studies have focused on stigma toward eating disorders, in general, and even less have focused on the stigma of anorexia nervosa (AN), specifically. Preliminary research indicates that AN may be both stigmatizing and admired, but the factors contributing to the perception of AN has not been adequately studied. To date, researchers have yet to examine the role of body size in the perception of and attitudes toward individuals with AN. By showing participants one of three female figures varying only …

Synthesis, Structure-Activity Relationship Study, And Mode Of Action Study Of 1,4-Naphthoquinone Based Anticancer And Antimicrobial Agents, Jaya P. Shrestha
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The first three projects involve the synthesis and the mode of action study of 1,4-naphthoquinone based anticancer agents. These anticancer agents are highly potent against a wide range of cancer cell lines. These compounds showed ~8-fold selectivity towards the lung cancer cell line than the normal cell line. We also studied the mode of action and observed that generation of reactive oxygen species is the primary mode of action.
The final project involves the synthesis of multi-cationic antimicrobial agents. These compounds are active against both bacteria and fungi. These compounds are very easy to synthesize and can be scaled up …

The Effects Of Federal, State, And Private Oil And Gas Ownerships On County Wages In The Intermountain West, Benjamin A. Crabb
The Effects Of Federal, State, And Private Oil And Gas Ownerships On County Wages In The Intermountain West, Benjamin A. Crabb
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Advances in drilling technology and resource prices contributed to a boom in oil and natural gas production in the Western U.S. in the first decade of the 2000s. Following the boom, a strain of state-level legislation emerged calling for the transfer of federal lands to the states. A justification for the proposed transfers is the claim that state management will increase oil and gas production, resulting in improved economic outcomes. However, a substantial literature indicates that dependence on mineral wealth can be a problematic development strategy which may result in slower economic growth and other undesirable socioeconomic outcomes. The role …
Evaluation Of Interactive Computerized Training To Teach Paraprofessionals How To Implement Errorless Discrete Trial Instruction, Kristina R. Gerencser
Evaluation Of Interactive Computerized Training To Teach Paraprofessionals How To Implement Errorless Discrete Trial Instruction, Kristina R. Gerencser
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As special education classrooms continue to rely on paraprofessionals to implement interventions, provide instructions, and monitor student progress— it is imperative paraprofessionals are well trained. Without adequate training, paraprofessionals can unintentionally create prompt dependency, limit academic growth, and reinforce problem behavior. However, providing quality training to paraprofessionals can be costly to school districts. Interactive computerized trainings may be a solution. The current study investigated the effectiveness of an interactive computerized training to teaching paraprofessionals a commonly used teaching strategy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other related developmental disabilities called discrete trial instruction. Often procedures to reduce student errors …
Educational Experiences And Goals Of Homeless Youth And Barriers To Reaching These Goals, Rachel Peterson
Educational Experiences And Goals Of Homeless Youth And Barriers To Reaching These Goals, Rachel Peterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The cost of homelessness is high, not only in terms of the array of traumatic experiences of those who are homeless, but in monetary terms for society as a whole. It costs between $20,000 and $40,000 annually for one homeless individual to cycle through public service systems such as emergency rooms, jail, mental health care facilities, and shelters. This annual cost can add up quickly with long periods of homelessness. For half of homeless youth (age 14-24), homelessness will not end during adolescence. Lack of steady employment is one of the largest barriers for youth experiencing homelessness to become permanently …
Bringing The States Back In: Institutional Determinants Of State Level Immigration Policies, Paul D. Jacobs
Bringing The States Back In: Institutional Determinants Of State Level Immigration Policies, Paul D. Jacobs
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
For the record 42 million immigrants residing in the U.S., the ease with which they can integrate into society is heavily determined by what state they reside in. While immigration policy formation at the state level is new due to the historical supremacy that the federal government has had on this issue, the federal stalemate at the federal level has led the states to pass more than 1,500 immigration laws since 2005. How states come to enact inclusive or exclusionary immigration policies is not well understood. Previous scholarship has examined many important predictors of these inclusive or exclusionary laws, but …
Migratory Waterbird Ecology At A Critical Staging Area, Great Salt Lake, Utah, Maureen G. Frank
Migratory Waterbird Ecology At A Critical Staging Area, Great Salt Lake, Utah, Maureen G. Frank
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Millions of birds use Great Salt Lake, Utah, during their migrations every year. While many of the birds use the shorelines and wetlands around Great Salt Lake, there are three migratory species that use the open waters of Great Salt Lake: Wilson's phalaropes (Phalaropus tricolor), red-necked phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus), and eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis). Eared grebes feed primarily on brine shrimp (Artemia fanciscana), while phalaropes are thought to consume brine flies (Ephydridae) and brackish-water aquatic invertebrates. Despite the reliance of phalaropes and eared grebes on the invertebrate prey of Great Salt Lake, …
Does Experience With Sagebrush In Utero And Early In Life Influence The Use Of Sagebrush By Sheep?, Ashley T. Longmore
Does Experience With Sagebrush In Utero And Early In Life Influence The Use Of Sagebrush By Sheep?, Ashley T. Longmore
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Learning from mother begins early in the developmental process and can have lifelong effects when it comes to forage preferences. Recent research suggests that mothers are a powerful and positive influence before birth. Pregnancy is not an incubation period buy a staging period for well-being and disease later in life. Better understanding the developmental processes which take place in utero and the effects they have later in life may help us create management plans that utilize grazing animals to their full potential as landscape manipulators.
Using in utero and early-life programming as a management tool is a relatively new concept, …
Emerging Technology To Exclude Wildlife From Roads: Electrified Pavement And Deer Guards In Utah, Usa, Joseph P. Flower
Emerging Technology To Exclude Wildlife From Roads: Electrified Pavement And Deer Guards In Utah, Usa, Joseph P. Flower
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Vehicle collisions with large wild animals threaten public safety, can harm wildlife populations, and often result in substantial property damage. The most effective
way to reduce these collisions is to install wildlife fencing along the roadway and provide structures that enable wildlife to cross roads safely. However, if access roads that bisect fencing do not include barriers to deter animals from entering the highway, these measures can become ineffective. The purpose of my research was to: 1) evaluate the effectiveness of barriers currently used to exclude wildlife from highways, and 2) determine whether cattle guards augmented with segments of electrified …
The Effect Of Behavioral Skills Training On Teachers Conducting The Recess-To-Classroom Transition, Sarah C. Smith
The Effect Of Behavioral Skills Training On Teachers Conducting The Recess-To-Classroom Transition, Sarah C. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Although it may not seem harmful, students in the elementary grades often take several minutes to move from recess back to their classrooms. The problem, however, is that these lengthy transitions add up over time, and teachers lose valuable time to instruct. The less instruction students receive, the poorer their academic performance tends to be. But how much time can teachers save by reducing their students’ transitions?
According to the current study, the answer is a lot. Dr. Thomas S. Higbee and Sarah C. Smith of Utah State University recently conducted a study in which they trained second, third, and …
Computational Studies Of Microscopic Superfluidity In 4he Clusters, Angeline R. Wairegi
Computational Studies Of Microscopic Superfluidity In 4he Clusters, Angeline R. Wairegi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The onset of microscopic superfluidity has been reported in ultracold droplets of bosons (4He atoms or para-H2 molecules) containing a variety of molecular dopants. The physics of these droplets involve both Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity. The two phenomena, while closely related, are not exactly the same. Superfluidity is fundamentally a microscopic effect and thermodynamic limit is necessary; it is still remarkable, though, that the signature of superfluidity has been reported in doped droplets consisting of as few as 4 4He atoms. The studies presented here adopt a molecular vantage point to investigate the quantum mechanics …
Towards Alternative Pathways: Nontraditional Student Success In A Distance-Delivered, Undergraduate Engineering Transfer Program, Angela L. Minichiello
Towards Alternative Pathways: Nontraditional Student Success In A Distance-Delivered, Undergraduate Engineering Transfer Program, Angela L. Minichiello
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Nontraditional students, including those who delay college entry, attend college part-time, work full-time, or financially support themselves or dependents, are highly underrepresented in engineering education. Recently, the United States began emphasizing a need to access this untapped human potential. U.S. educational policymakers now seek increased nontraditional student participation in engineering education through the creation of robust new pathways—within and between 2- and 4- year institutions—to undergraduate engineering degrees.
To be impactful, alternative pathways must be grounded in knowledge related to nontraditional student success in engineering. To access this knowledge, this study qualitatively examined the experiences of 14 nontraditional students who …
Benchmark Experiments For Natural Convection In Nuclear Fuel Rod Bundles, Kyle L. Jones
Benchmark Experiments For Natural Convection In Nuclear Fuel Rod Bundles, Kyle L. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Buoyancy is the mechanism through which heated air causes fluid motion due to a difference in temperature between a body and the surrounding fluid. This fluid motion can be very erratic and unstable, which creates a difficult problem when attempting to simulate this fluid motion. Using high performance computational power the capability of simulating these complex interactions is available but requires assessment to determine the accuracy of these difficult flow scenarios. This study provides experimental data that can be used to assess the simulation’s accuracy and to ensure the computational models are achieving the correct solution. The Rotatable Buoyancy Tunnel …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Instruction for developing students' number sense is a critical area of research in mathematics education because of the role number sense plays in early mathematics learning. Specifically, number system knowledge has been identified as a key cognitive mechanism in number sense development. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore variations in second-grade students' number sense development as they engaged in a counting-focused instructional treatment, geared towards developing number system knowledge, for differing amounts of time. Sixty second-grade students participated in number sense assessments and two students participated in in-depth, task-based interviews to provide quantitative and qualitative data …
Microalgae Sorption Of Ten Individual Heavy Metals And Their Effects On Growth And Lipid Accumulation, Eric M. Torres
Microalgae Sorption Of Ten Individual Heavy Metals And Their Effects On Growth And Lipid Accumulation, Eric M. Torres
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study is to determine the potential microalgae have for being a heavy metal remediation tool. Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that can be found inside the earth or on its surface. Typically, heavy metals are found naturally at low concentrations. However, through human activities, heavy metals are continually making their way to the surface and being concentrated. This happens largely through mining and manufacturing operations. For example, NiCd batteries produce waste containing nickel and cadmium, and paper manufacturing produces waste containing high levels of lead. As underdeveloped nations continue to industrialize and the world population …
A Vision-Based Bee Counting Algorithm For Electronic Monitoring Of Langsthroth Beehives, Sai Kiran Reka
A Vision-Based Bee Counting Algorithm For Electronic Monitoring Of Langsthroth Beehives, Sai Kiran Reka
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Forager traffic is the number of bees entering or exiting the bee hive over a given period of time. To estimate forager traffic, beekeepers typically take a stopwatch and count the number of bees manually over a set period of time. Forager traffic is an important health indicator of the hive. Sudden changes in forager traffic levels show that there may be an anomaly inside the hive or in the environment. There have been several attempts to automate the estimation of forager traffic in Langsthroth hives with custombuilt hardware devices. In this thesis, we argue that bee counting can be …
Fake Likers Detection On Facebook, Prudhvi Ratna Badri Satya
Fake Likers Detection On Facebook, Prudhvi Ratna Badri Satya
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As billions of users have used online social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, many online services have begun adapting signals of the popularity. For example, search engines rank popular users posts in the top results. A post of a popular user is automatically delivered to the followers or likers. Popular companies in online social networks also get good reputation from people. The popularity on Facebook is measured based on the number of likes in a page. Unfortunately, some crowdsourcing websites (e.g.Microworkers.com) or supply-driven marketplaces (e.g.Fiverr.com) began offering fake liking services in which these crowd workers sent fake likes …

A 48-year-old prestressed double tee girder bridge located on Icy Springs road in Coalville, Utah, was tested for live load. The test measured strains, deflections and rotations. The instruments used for measuring the respective measurements were strain gages, deflectometers ("twangers") and tiltmeters.
From the recorded measurements a finite element model (FEM) was calibrated to validate the modeling techniques based on the test data. The FEM implemented two joint link elements to connect the flanges of the FEM deck to model the transverse load distribution of the bridge deteriorated shear connectors. The abutment restraints were modeled by one joint link elements. …
The Intersection Of School Ethnic Composition And Structure: Predicting Social And Academic Outcomes Among Latino Students, Benjamin Pierce
The Intersection Of School Ethnic Composition And Structure: Predicting Social And Academic Outcomes Among Latino Students, Benjamin Pierce
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
There is a persistent gap between the outcomes of Latino students and those of students from other ethnic groups in American schools. In part, this may be due to schooling practices in the American education system that have traditionally failed to cultivate positive contexts for ethnic diversity. Research studies involving focus groups, one-on-on interviews, and small samples of participants have suggested that sentiments of being unfairly treated by teachers and peers, of being stigmatized as low-achievers, and of cultural “incongruence” in schools are common among Latino students. However, quantitative studies involving large samples and sophisticated statistical techniques have produced few …

The expected results …
The Impact Of Social Comparisons On Stereotype Threat For Black College Students Attending Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Odessia Knowles
The Impact Of Social Comparisons On Stereotype Threat For Black College Students Attending Predominantly White Colleges And Universities, Odessia Knowles
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Despite increasing college enrollment rates for Black individuals, college completion rates remain dismal, thus the achievement gap between Black and White students remains in effect. One reason which may contribute to low completion rates for Black college students is stereotype threat. Stereotype threat is when an individual is at risk of confirming a negative stereotype about their group membership. For Blacks attending college, the threat would be related to academic underachievement. However, the impact of stereotype threat is highly individualized and an individual’s Black racial identity may impact stereotype threat for certain individuals.
Social comparison theory suggests that to gain …
An Analysis Of Variability Of Play Behavior With Preschool Children With Autism, Mary Katherine Endicott Harris
An Analysis Of Variability Of Play Behavior With Preschool Children With Autism, Mary Katherine Endicott Harris
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Children with autism often display repetitive, stereotypical movements with toys in lieu of appropriate play skills. Unlike typically developing children, they do not vary their play with toys. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether three preschoolers with autism would vary their play actions when exposed to a lag schedule of reinforcement and physical prompting procedure. All three participants demonstrated varied play actions with the lag schedule and prompting procedure in place. These behaviors maintained when a probe was conducted two weeks later in the absence of the lag schedule. Although responding was high in the 2-week …
An Energy-Efficient Semi-Partitioned Approach For Hard Real-Time Systems With Voltage And Frequency Islands, Jesse W. Patterson
An Energy-Efficient Semi-Partitioned Approach For Hard Real-Time Systems With Voltage And Frequency Islands, Jesse W. Patterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Embedded devices are computer systems with a dedicated function, such as kitchen appliances, electronic toys, phones, et cetera. Embedded devices are commonplace, and many are expected to respond to users in real-time. Such devices are often categorized as real-time embedded systems as they differ from other embedded systems in that work performed by a real-time embedded system must be scheduled such that timeliness can be provided to the user (e.g. when someone is talking on a phone, the phone needs to be able to schedule the sending and receiving of data in a timely manner such that the conversation is …
Rapid Savanna Response To Changing Precipitation Intensity, Ryan S. Berry
Rapid Savanna Response To Changing Precipitation Intensity, Ryan S. Berry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Climate change has the potential to cause large-scale changes in plant growth, biodiversity, and biosphere-climate feedbacks. A pervasive aspect of climate change is that as the atmosphere warms, precipitation events are likely to become less frequent but more intense, because warmer air can hold more water. Larger precipitation events can be expected to change plant productivity and community composition, particularly in semiarid ecosystems such as savannas. Savannas are of particular interest because they are spatially expansive at the global scale, they are important to humans for food production, and they are known to be sensitive to changes in soil water …
An Allometric Approach To Evaluate Physiological And Production Efficiencies In Tree Size For Tart Cherry And Apple Orchard Systems, Zachary T. Brym
An Allometric Approach To Evaluate Physiological And Production Efficiencies In Tree Size For Tart Cherry And Apple Orchard Systems, Zachary T. Brym
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In orchard systems, the size of a tree and the physical structure of its canopy influences how the tree gathers resources and uses them to produce fruit. Smaller orchard trees produce a higher proportion of fruit relative to their size. Small trees also produce higher quality fruit than larger trees. These relationships were demonstrated for apples and tart cherries grown in Utah. In physiological ecology, models called allometries have been developed that explain how the size of wild plants is related to growth, architecture, and reproduction. These models were applied to apple and tart cherry orchard systems and revealed consistent …
Exploiting Adaptive Techniques To Improve Processor Energy Efficiency, Hu Chen
Exploiting Adaptive Techniques To Improve Processor Energy Efficiency, Hu Chen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As technology advances, the size of transistor — the basic building block of microprocessors, continues shrinking. The downscaled transistor will make its manufacture process become less controllable, and its operation less predictable. Moreover, smaller transistor size will lead to higher volume of transistors on a single chip, thus increases the chip power consumption. This dissertation proposes various techniques to efficiently tolerate the uncertainties in microprocessors. Also, it proposes an innovative design paradigm to build energy-efficient processor under ultra-low supply-voltage. Evaluated with rigorous methodology, the proposed approaches achieve significant improvement in processor energy efficiency, compared to other state-of-art techniques.
