Specters Of Exhaustion: The Phenomenology Of Action And The Horizon Of Critique, Nica Siegel
Specters Of Exhaustion: The Phenomenology Of Action And The Horizon Of Critique, Nica Siegel
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
In 1986, tracking the erosion of the Welfare State project, Jürgen Habermas wroteof “the exhaustion of utopian energies.” Emerging in the first instance from a waning- Cold War account of the disappointing afterlives of the European left, the claim of his essay was just as equally about the capacity of critique to renew its own project. Although the institutional priorities emerging from Habermas’s diagnosis have been influential for political theory, the challenge of exhaustion has yet to be answered, or even properly problematized. Now, some forty years after Cold War claims to the “end of history,” confronted with specters of …
Onward: An Ethnography Of Latina Migrant Motherhood During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jessica P. Cerdeña
Onward: An Ethnography Of Latina Migrant Motherhood During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jessica P. Cerdeña
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
This dissertation evaluates the experience of Latina migrant mothers living in New Haven, Connecticut amid the COVID-19 pandemic. I ask: How do Latin American migrant women accommodate traumatic histories and motherhood amid a global public health and economic crisis? This ethnography demonstrates the powerful ways women cope with histories of trauma and ongoing structural adversity. Using the metaphor of the monarch butterfly, I consider processes of migration from Latin America and adjustment to life in the U.S., motherhood including the sacrifices women make for the betterment of their children, and metamorphosis, or transformations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and …
The Spirit Of Education: Politics And Pedagogy In Plato, Rousseau, Dewey And Freire, Stephanie Almeida Nevin
The Spirit Of Education: Politics And Pedagogy In Plato, Rousseau, Dewey And Freire, Stephanie Almeida Nevin
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Education has long been romanticized by political thinkers for its supposed power to shape ideal selves and societies. This dissertation examines the history of political thought on education and contends that citizens are principally educated through socialization by law, culture, and institutions. Revealing the limits of utilitarian visions of education as subject formation, this dissertation ultimately argues against the excessive idealization of education as a means of realizing individual and collective projects of becoming. It argues for a revaluation of education as a truth-seeking activity for all ages.In “Molding Citizens: Plato’s Question,” I offer a rereading of Plato’s body of …

Variations On Defining A Dialect Region, Sasha Lioutikova
Variations On Defining A Dialect Region, Sasha Lioutikova
Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity
This paper explores various methods of defining a dialect region, using syntactic constructions characteristic of the American South. We consider three important characteristics of such a method: place, feature, and measure. ”Place” details how data points should be grouped, ”feature” details which data points should be used, and ”measure” details how the data should be analyzed. While we may not claim one method as superior to any other, this research can provide insight into how different techniques of characterizing geographic variation may affect the resulting dialect regions.
Anymore Once More: Geographical And Syntactic Distribution, Laurence R. Horn
Anymore Once More: Geographical And Syntactic Distribution, Laurence R. Horn
Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity
Occurrences of non-polarity anymore (NPAM) or so-called “positive anymore” with the approximate meaning of ‘nowadays’ have long been collected by North American dialectologists. The name of the construction is misleading, however, since mainstream anymore, as a garden-variety negative polarity item, is acceptable (like ever or anyone) in a range of grammatically “positive” but downward entailing environments. After touching on the semantic characterization of mainstream and non-polarity anymore and the “stigma enigma” presented by the variable social diagnosis of the construction by those familiar and unfamiliar with it, we present the results a study of the grammatical and …
Get My Syntax On, Heidi Lei
Get My Syntax On, Heidi Lei
Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity
In this paper, I describe and analyze an instance of micro-syntactic variation in American English, a construction I refer to as get my X on. There is considerable flexibility in the construction, involving the types of determiners allowed, the phrasal verbs used, and most notably, the structure of the DP my X. In Standard American English, the X following a possessive pronoun is generally restricted to nouns. However, in this construction, X can be a lexical verb like sing, teach, or even celebrate. Some speakers of African American English accept only the bare verb, rejecting …

Stand Dynamics And Diversity Patterns In Planted And Naturally Regenerating Urban Forests, Danica Anne A Doroski
Stand Dynamics And Diversity Patterns In Planted And Naturally Regenerating Urban Forests, Danica Anne A Doroski
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
The world is becoming an increasingly urban planet with 68% of the global population expected to live in cities by 2050 and urban land cover expected to increase by 40%. This urban expansion brings with it a host of environmental and health consequences such as the urban heat island effect, reduced air and water quality, and biodiversity losses. In forested biomes, trees and forests growing within the urban matrix offer a valuable opportunity to offset many of these negative impacts and to provide a suite of additional benefits. In recognition of this opportunity, there is mounting interest in investing in …
Improving Care For Survivors Of Gun Violence, Kathleen O'Neill
Improving Care For Survivors Of Gun Violence, Kathleen O'Neill
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Survivors of gun violence have significant sequelae including mental health disorders that often go undiagnosed and untreated. Survivors of gun violence are at high risk for both re-injury with a firearm as well as interaction with the criminal justice system. These poor outcomes for survivors of gun violence contribute to the cycle of gun violence that plague communities across the United States. Learning from historical public health successes, survivors of gun violence are an important population for targeted secondary prevention efforts. Despite this, the mechanisms for these outcomes among survivors of gun violence are largely unknown and there is a …

Lookalike Targeting On Others' Journeys: Brand Versus Performance Marketing, K. Sudhir, Seung Yoon Lee, Subroto Roy
Lookalike Targeting On Others' Journeys: Brand Versus Performance Marketing, K. Sudhir, Seung Yoon Lee, Subroto Roy
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Lookalike Targeting is a widely used model-based ad targeting approach that uses a seed database of individuals to identify matching “lookalikes” for targeted customer acquisition. An advertiser has to make two key choices: (1) who to seed on and (2) seed-match rank range. First, we assess if and how seeding by others’ journey stages impact clickthrough (upstream behavior desirable for brand marketing) and donation (downstream behavior desirable in performance marketing). Overall, we find that lookalike targeting using other’s journeys can be effective-third parties can indeed identify factors unobserved to the advertiser merely from others’ journey stage to improve targeting. Further, …

Foundations Of Demand Estimation, Steven T. Berry, Philip A. Haile
Foundations Of Demand Estimation, Steven T. Berry, Philip A. Haile
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Demand elasticities and other features of demand are critical determinants of the answers to most positive and normative questions about market power or the functioning of markets in practice. As a result, reliable demand estimation is an essential input to many types of research in Industrial Organization and other fields of economics. This chapter presents a discussion of some foundational issues in demand estimation. We focus on the distinctive challenges of demand estimation and strategies one can use to overcome them. We cover core models, alternative data settings, common estimation approaches, the role and choice of instruments, and nonparametric identification.

The Stories Behind The Stories Mediation Of Narratives In David’S Story, Naima Kalra Gupta
The Stories Behind The Stories Mediation Of Narratives In David’S Story, Naima Kalra Gupta
The Yale Undergraduate Research Journal
The Truth and Reconciliation Committee was set up in the aftermath of apartheid to bring to the surface human rights abuses that took place in the apartheid era, through witness testimony and recount- ing of trauma. The TRC undoubtedly brought to the forefront the challenges of narrating and the reasons for remembering a contested and traumatic past. It is impossible to read David’s Story, which shifts temporally between Griqua efforts for self-determination and the South African liberation movement and foregrounds the act of telling, without taking into account the ambitious project of the TRC. This paper examines how history is …

Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy And Other Legal Issues, April K. Anderson-Zorn, Dallas Long
Digitize Your Yearbooks: Creating Digital Access While Considering Student Privacy And Other Legal Issues, April K. Anderson-Zorn, Dallas Long
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Student yearbooks are distinctive cultural records. For the schools and universities that produced them, yearbooks promoted a shared sense of identity and experience among students and helped create enduring loyalty to the institutions long after the students graduated. For scholars and other users, yearbooks are unique primary sources that provide insight into past eras of local student life and culture. In regards to user engagement and preserving local histories, student yearbooks should be ideal candidates for digitization by libraries and archives. However, yearbooks are challenging digitization projects because they are likely to contain privacy-sensitive photographs and other information as well …
