Multiple indicators including low coronary artery calcium score, low carotid intimal media thickness, and low rates of myocardial infarction have previously suggested that ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) disease is protective against systemic late atherosclerosis. However, the mechanism of this paradoxical, protective effect is still unknown and may provide valuable insights into the fundamental pathophysiology of both ATAAs and atherosclerosis. Our aim was to investigate whether ATAA patient lipoprotein levels may help explain this anti-atherogenic phenomenon. Introduction; The incidence of HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma(OPSCC) has increased significantly over the past several decades, however public awareness of HPV’s role in head and neck cancer remains markedly low. There is evidence to suggest that addressing this knowledge gap through patient education initiatives may help increase HPV vaccination rates. Background: Hypertension (HTN) is the primary modifiable risk factor for stroke, with blood pressure (BP) control being paramount. Yet only one-fourth of patients with HTN who are receiving medical care have controlled BP. Accordingly, we aimed to elucidate patterns of BP control prior to incident stroke.Methods: We analyzed electronic health record data from patients who were hospitalized for a first stroke within the Yale New Haven Health system between 2015 and 2021. Objectives: Duplex ultrasound (DUS) of the lower extremities is commonly used to assess patients with lower extremity atherosclerosis. Arterial calcification can often be visualized in these images, however efforts to quantify its extent have been limited. We thus sought to develop a new scoring system to measure calcification on duplex US studies of the femoral artery and correlate it with standard CT-based methods. About 1 in 3 adults in the United States have prediabetes, yet 8 in 10 of people are unaware of having this condition. The gap in timely diagnosis of prediabetes hinders opportunities for awareness of risk for type 2 diabetes (T2DM), self-management, and referral to preventative interventions. Individuals with undiagnosed prediabetes have 1.3 times higher risk for hospitalization. Extending prediabetes screening to the inpatient hospital setting offers opportunity to identify undiagnosed prediabetes. Individuals living with mental illness have significantly reduced physical health compared to the general population, leading to a significantly decreased life expectancy. Physical activity has been shown to be an effective strategy to address many of the conditions contributing to this disparity. However, many people with mental illness do not meet the recommended levels of daily physical activity. Hydrocephalus, characterized by a pathologic dilation of the brain’s cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-filled ventricles, may either be primary or acquired. Acquired hydrocephalus, most often caused by ventricular infection or hemorrhage, is currently treated by surgical CSF diversion with either a shunt or endoscopic third ventriculostomy – two procedures plagued by high failure and complication rates. The lack of pharmaceutical treatments is in part due to the obscure pathophysiology of the disease. Transimmunization (TI) is a dendritic cell (DC)-based immunotherapy derived from extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP), a widely used immunotherapy for cutaneous T cell lymphoma. TI builds upon the mechanistic understanding that ECP inducts large-scale monocyte-to-dendritic cell differentiation through physiologic platelet-monocyte interactions that occur during the passage of cells over a plastic plate. While TI and ECP have used apoptotic tumor cells treated with 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and ultraviolet-A (UVA) irradiation as the source of antigens by which to target its immunotherapeutic effects, there is investigational interest in alternative antigen sources, including mRNA-containing lipid nanoparticles (LNP). Encapsulation of therapeutic agents within biodegradable nanoparticles (NP) allows for gradual drug release from the nanoparticle core. When injected intravenously, our nonadhesive NPs (NNP) have previously demonstrated longer circulatory time with “stealthy” features, thus allowing for prolonged drug exposure systemically. In the murine transplantable cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) PDVC57 model, our bioadhesive NP (BNP) loaded with chemotherapy have shown increased retention of the active agent after intratumoral (i.t.) injection, thus allowing for prolonged drug exposure when locally delivered. Effective Wilderness Medicine (WM) resident education can be challenging to achieve in the traditional classroom setting. The Medical Wilderness Adventure Race (MedWAR) was developed to teach and test WM using simulated scenarios in an austere setting under physical, environmental, and psychological stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate participant perceptions of simulation-based WM training in an Emergency Medicine (EM) residency MedWAR. A 20-question descriptive survey was administered to participants of an academic EM residency program’s annual MedWAR during 2021 and 2022. The estimated prevalence of learning disabilities (LDs) is nearly 8% of all children. Yet fewer than 5% of all children are diagnosed in public schools — jeopardizing remediation. The specific aims of this study were as follows: 1) To perform a qualitative study involving individual interviews with front-line child-facing professionals to identify barriers to detecting school-aged children with LDs and 2) To utilize results to suggest improvements to pediatric clinical care, as pediatricians are often initial responders for families when children experience academic difficulties.
