Phytoplankton Growth At The Shelf-Break Front In The Middle Atlantic Bight, John Marra, R. W. Houghton, Christopher Garside
Phytoplankton Growth At The Shelf-Break Front In The Middle Atlantic Bight, John Marra, R. W. Houghton, Christopher Garside
Journal of Marine Research
The summertime front near the shelf break in the Middle Atlantic Bight is both thermohaline and baroclinic. Near the surface, large gradients of temperature (T) and salinity (S) exist with little cross-frontal variation in density. At depths >50 m, an isopycnal boundary separates Slope Water from colder, fresher shelf water. Higher concentrations of chlorophyll are found in the upper part of the front, between water types of shelf and Slope Water origin. Calculations show also that the front is a region of enhanced phytoplankton growth. It is proposed that the relative fertility of the front is …

Estimating Long Run Economic Equilibria, Peter C.B. Phillips, Mico Loretan
Estimating Long Run Economic Equilibria, Peter C.B. Phillips, Mico Loretan
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Our subject is econometric estimation and inference concerning long-run economic equilibria in models with stochastic trends. Our interest is focused on single equation specifications such as those employed in the Error Correction Model (ECM) methodology of David Hendry (1987, 1989 inter alia) and the semiparametric modified least squares method of Phillips and Hansen (1989). We start by reviewing the prescriptions for empirical time series research that are presently available. We argue that the diversity of choices is confusing to practitioners and obscures the fact that statistical theory is clear about optimal inference procedures. Part of the difficulty arises from the …

Catalogue And Review Of The Type Fossil Crocodilians In The Yale Peabody Museum, Mark A. Norell, Glenn W. Storrs
Postilla
A systematic review of fossil crocodilian holotypes in the Yale Peabody Museum provides a basis for taxonomic reinterpretation of the specimens. Several species are rejected as having been erected upon indeterminate material or as being junior synonyms of existing taxa. For valid taxa, new descriptions, designations, and/or diagnoses supplement the originals when necessary. Several fossils have received clarification of their provenance data.

Time Series Regression With A Unit Root And Infinite Variance Errors, Peter C.B. Phillips
Time Series Regression With A Unit Root And Infinite Variance Errors, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Chan and Tran give the limit theory for the least squares coefficient in a random walk with the iid errors that are in the domain of attraction of a stable law. This note discusses their results and provides generalizations to the case of I(q) processes with weakly dependent errors whose distributions are in the domain of attraction of a stable law. General unit root tests are also studied. It is shown that the semiparametric corrections suggested by the author for the finite variance case continue to work when the errors have infinite variance. The limit laws are expressed in terms …

Streamfunctions For The Lateral Velocity Vector In A Compressible Ocean, Trevor J. Mcdougall
Streamfunctions For The Lateral Velocity Vector In A Compressible Ocean, Trevor J. Mcdougall
Journal of Marine Research
Streamfunctions are known in (i) geopotential surfaces, (ii) isobaric surfaces, (iii) surfaces of constant in situ density, ρ, and (iv) surfaces of constant steric anomaly, δ. lt is desirable to map a streamfunction in a surface in which most of the mixing and movement of water-masses occurs so that the streamlines obtained in two dimensions will approximate the flow paths of the full three-dimensional flow field. These surfaces are believed to be neutral surfaces, but while a streamfunction exists in a neutral surface, we do not as yet have a closed expression for it in terms of a …
Spectral Transform Simulations Of Finite Amplitude Double-Diffusive Instabilities In Two Dimensions, D. W. A. Whitfield, G. Holloway, J. Y. Holyer
Spectral Transform Simulations Of Finite Amplitude Double-Diffusive Instabilities In Two Dimensions, D. W. A. Whitfield, G. Holloway, J. Y. Holyer
Journal of Marine Research
Simulations of double-diffusion with a two-dimensional, vertical plane spectral transform model reveal details of finite amplitude behavior in salt finger, interleaving and diffusive instabilities. Within the range of fluid parameters studied (3 < σ < 10, .1 < r < .5), infinite, fastest-growing fingers are unstable to Holyer's (1984) nonoscillatory instability and are completely disrupted by it. Finite fingers localized on density steps are also disrupted. Initialized density steps are eroded (the gradients reduced). Fluxes and other diagnostic quantities were determined for salt finger fields at statistical stationarity. These fields contain transitory, irregular finger structures. Fluxes decline steeply as Rfp increases. A single point of comparison of buoyancy flux with ocean measurement yielded good agreement. The dependence of flux ratio on the stability parameter is similar to the linear theory prediction for fastest-growing, infinite fingers and does not increase as Rfp approaches 1, in contrast to laboratory measurements. Holyer's (1984) Floquet theory is extended to the case of nonzero, density compensating, …
Resonance Of Internal Waves In Fjords: A Finite-Difference Model, Benoit Cushman-Roisin, Vigdis Tverberg, Edgar G. Pavia
Resonance Of Internal Waves In Fjords: A Finite-Difference Model, Benoit Cushman-Roisin, Vigdis Tverberg, Edgar G. Pavia
Journal of Marine Research
After the time periodicity is removed from the problem, the spatial distribution of internal waves in a stratified fluid is governed by a hyperbolic equation. With boundary conditions specified all along the perimeter of the domain, information is transmitted in both directions (forward and backward) along every characteristic, and, unlike the typical temporal hyperbolic equation, the internal-wave equation is not amenable to a simple forward integration. The problem is tackled here with a finite-difference, relaxation technique by constructing a time-dependent, dissipative problem, the final steady state of which yields the solution of the original problem. Attempts at solving the problem …
O2 And Co2 Balances Approach For Estimating Biological Production In The Mixed Layer Of The Tropical Atlantic Ocean (Guinea Dome Area), C. Oudot
Journal of Marine Research
The rates at which concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide change under the influence of the exchange with the atmosphere and biological production are derived from in situ measurements of O2 and CO2 in the mixed layer over a 10-day period in the Guinea Dome area. The rates of O2 production (10.3 mmol m–2 d–1) and CO2 consumption (13.0 mmol m–2 d–1) by photosynthetic activity exceed the evasion of O2 and CO2 into the atmosphere (respectively 2.4 and 1.2 mmol m–2 d–1). The net apparent …
Open-Incubation, Diffusion Methods For Measuring Solute Reaction Rates In Sediments, Robert C. Aller, James E. Mackin
Open-Incubation, Diffusion Methods For Measuring Solute Reaction Rates In Sediments, Robert C. Aller, James E. Mackin
Journal of Marine Research
Sedimentary solute distributions and fluxes are determined in part by the kinetics of production/consumption reactions in a deposit. It is possible to estimate rates and investigate kinetic relations in undisturbed or manipulated sediments by documenting build-up or depletion patterns of solutes allowed to diffuse either between relatively thin sections of sediment and a well-stirred water reservoir (plug incubation); or through a large section of sediment without an overlying reservoir (whole-core incubation). The time-dependent concentrations in the sediment in both cases depend on reaction rates, kinetics, diffusion coefficients, and geometric scaling of the sediment and contacting reservoir. Major advantages of the …
The Influence Of Gulf Stream Warm Core Rings On Recruitment Of Fish In The Northwest Atlantic, Ransom A. Myers, Ken Drinkwater
The Influence Of Gulf Stream Warm Core Rings On Recruitment Of Fish In The Northwest Atlantic, Ransom A. Myers, Ken Drinkwater
Journal of Marine Research
The a priori hypothesis that entrainment of shelf water by warm core rings reduces recruitment of marine fish stocks through offshore transport is tested. Weekly satellite images for 1973 through 1986 are used to generate time-series of the positions and numbers of warm core rings and the locations of the shelf-slope front from the mid-Atlantic Bight to the Grand Banks. These data are combined with estimates of the timing of the spawning and the duration of larval stages to create stock-specific annual indices of ring activity and shelf-slope front variability. There is evidence that increased warm core ring activity reduces …
Vertical Distribution Of Microbial And Meiofaunal Populations In Sediments Of A Natural Coastal Hydrocarbon Seep, Paul A. Montagna, James E. Bauer, Dane Hardin, Robert B. Spies
Vertical Distribution Of Microbial And Meiofaunal Populations In Sediments Of A Natural Coastal Hydrocarbon Seep, Paul A. Montagna, James E. Bauer, Dane Hardin, Robert B. Spies
Journal of Marine Research
We studied the vertical distribution of microbes and meiofauna in natural hydrocarbon seep sediments to determine if there was a relationship between profiles of benthic trophic structure and the unique biogeochemical conditions present at the seep. Three stations in the Santa Barbara Channel represented a gradient of natural petroleum seepage, from very active, to moderate, to none. Seasonal differences were examined by sampling in the three major oceanographic seasons, upwelling (April), mixed (July), and Davidson (December). Densities of microbes and meiofauna were highest in July, and decreased in winter. All population sizes decreased with increasing depth in the sediment. Harpacticoids …
Lagrangian Statistics In The South Atlantic As Derived From Sos And Fgge Drifters, Horacio A. Figueroa, Donald B. Olson
Lagrangian Statistics In The South Atlantic As Derived From Sos And Fgge Drifters, Horacio A. Figueroa, Donald B. Olson
Journal of Marine Research
Daily averaged positions obtained from satellite-tracked drifting buoys launched during the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE) and those launched as part of the ONR sponsored Southern Ocean Studies (SOS) are used to analyze eddy diffusivity due to mesoscale motions and its parameterization in some regions of the South Atlantic Ocean, significantly extending the energy range for which this type of estimations are available. Diffusion coefficients, Lagrangian integral time scales and velocity variances are calculated, and Taylor's (1921) Theorem which relates eddy diffusivity estimates with the dispersion of particles from a fixed origin is tested. In all of the cases analyzed …
