Monitoring The Upper Southeastern Atlantic Transports Using Altimeter Data, Silvia L. Garzoli, Gustavo J. Goñi, Arthur J. Mariano, Donald B. Olson Jan 1997

Monitoring The Upper Southeastern Atlantic Transports Using Altimeter Data, Silvia L. Garzoli, Gustavo J. Goñi, Arthur J. Mariano, Donald B. Olson

Journal of Marine Research

A large in-situ data set, collected in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean, is merged with the TOPEX/POSEIDON altimeter observations in order to verify the use of altimeter data in monitoring the transports of the Agulhas/Benguela system. Comparisons between altimeter observations and either moored current meters or inverted echo sounder measurements shows that the sea-surface elevation anomaly is significantly correlated with the thermocline depth and the surface dynamic height, respectively. Knowing the least-squares regression parameters, it is possible to calculate the transports by using geostrophy and either a two-layer or a continuously-stratified model. The transports obtained from fits of dynamic height to …

The Hydrography And Circulation Of The Upper 1200 Meters In The Tropical North Atlantic During 1982-91, Gennady Chepurin, James A. Carton Jan 1997

The Hydrography And Circulation Of The Upper 1200 Meters In The Tropical North Atlantic During 1982-91, Gennady Chepurin, James A. Carton

Journal of Marine Research

We assemble a collection of 7591 conductivity-temperature-depth stations in the tropical Atlantic between 5S and 20N for the period 1982–1991 using data from the Soviet SECTIONS program enhanced by contributions primarily from the WESTRAX and FOCAL/SEQUAL programs. Most of the stations are west of 30W, forming a series of 21 surveys. In addition there were five multi-ship basinwide surveys, each taking 1.5–3 months to complete. The quality of the SECTIONS data is discussed and comparisons between the data sets are shown. Within the pycnocline, southern water is distinguished by salinity that is 0.3 psu lower than its northern counterpart at …

Updated Bathymetry Of The Anegada-Jungfern Passage Complex And Implications For Atlantic Inflow To The Abyssal Caribbean Sea, David M. Fratantoni, Rainer J. Zantopp, William E. Johns, Jerry L. Miller Jan 1997

Updated Bathymetry Of The Anegada-Jungfern Passage Complex And Implications For Atlantic Inflow To The Abyssal Caribbean Sea, David M. Fratantoni, Rainer J. Zantopp, William E. Johns, Jerry L. Miller

Journal of Marine Research

Recent bathymetric, hydrographic and direct velocity measurements indicate that a previously unexplored deep passage in the northeastern Caribbean Sea may play a significant role in the abyssal ventilation of this basin. The Anegada-Jungfern Passage complex has long been recognized as the sole pathway for deep Atlantic inflow to the eastern Caribbean. The Anegada Passage (sill depth 1915 m) connects the Atlantic Ocean with the small Virgin Islands Basin, while Jungfern Passage (sill depth 1815 m) connects the latter with the large and deep Venezuela Basin comprising the eastern third of the Caribbean Sea. In the region of Jungfern Passage recent …

Implications Of The Salt And Heat Budgets Of The Gulf Of Thailand, Kate Stansfield, Chris Garrett Jan 1997

Implications Of The Salt And Heat Budgets Of The Gulf Of Thailand, Kate Stansfield, Chris Garrett

Journal of Marine Research

Hydrographic data collected during 1959 and 1960 in the Gulf of Thailand, combined with supporting climatological data, have been used to investigate the salt and heat budgets of the Gulf. A simple model including mixing, net precipitation, local river run-off and Ekman flux predicts the flushing time of the Gulf, associated with processes other than the Ekman flux, to be 12.0 months, but predicts too small a magnitude and the wrong phase for the observed seasonal salinity cycle. Adding the discharge from the Mekong River reduces the flushing time to 5.4 months and improves the fit to the magnitude of …

Sediment Resuspension Rates, Organic Matter Quality And Food Utilization By Sea Scallops (Placopecten Magellanicus) On Georges Bank, Jonathan Grant, Peter Cranford, Craig Emerson Jan 1997

Sediment Resuspension Rates, Organic Matter Quality And Food Utilization By Sea Scallops (Placopecten Magellanicus) On Georges Bank, Jonathan Grant, Peter Cranford, Craig Emerson

Journal of Marine Research

Benthic detritus, bacteria, and settled phytoplankton are transported into the water column by resuspension, potentially providing a high quality food source to suspension feeders. Two aspects of resuspension must be considered in relation to food supplies for suspension feeders: the flux of particles from the sediments to the water column and its food value. Sediment resuspension rates on Georges Bank and the role of resuspended sediment in the diet of sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) were determined in laboratory flume experiments and shipboard feeding experiments, respectively. Resuspended carbon flux was estimated from flume bedload transport rates and the mass …

Estimated Inflation Costs Had European Unemployment Been Reduced In The 1980s By Macro Prices, Ray C. Fair Aug 1996

Estimated Inflation Costs Had European Unemployment Been Reduced In The 1980s By Macro Prices, Ray C. Fair

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper uses a multicountry econometric model to estimate what the inflation costs would have been if macropolicies had reduced European unemployment in the 1982:1-1990:4 period. A “non-NAIRU” framework is proposed for thinking about these costs.

A Scorecard For Indexed Government Debt, John Y. Campbell, Robert J. Shiller May 1996

A Scorecard For Indexed Government Debt, John Y. Campbell, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Within the last five years, Canada, Sweden and New Zealand have joined the ranks of the United Kingdom and other countries in issuing government bonds that are indexed to inflation. Some observers of the experience in these countries have argued that the United States should follow suit. This paper provides an overview of the issues surrounding debt indexation, and it tries to answer three empirical questions about indexed debt. First, how different would the returns on indexed bonds be from the returns on existing US debt instruments? Second, how would indexed bonds affect the government’s average financing costs? Third, how …

Genetic And Biochemical Characterization Of Drosophila Singed, A Homolog Of The Actin Bundling Protein Fascin, Kelly Cant May 1996

Genetic And Biochemical Characterization Of Drosophila Singed, A Homolog Of The Actin Bundling Protein Fascin, Kelly Cant

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Drosophila singed mutants were named for their gnarled bristle phenotype, however, severe alleles are also female sterile due to a defect in nurse cell cytoplasm transport. Recently, singed protein was shown to have 35% peptide identity with the actin bundling protein fascin. I present evidence that singed is a homolog of fascin. In vivo, singed is required for actin filament bundle formation in the cytoplasm of nurse cells during oogenesis and in the cellular extension that forms a bristle. In vitro, purified bacterially-expressed singed bundles actin filaments with the same 12 nm periodicity and stoichiometry reported for sea urchin fascin. While …

Semiparametric Estimation Of A Sample Selection Model, Donald W.K. Andrews, Marcia A. Schafgans Apr 1996

Semiparametric Estimation Of A Sample Selection Model, Donald W.K. Andrews, Marcia A. Schafgans

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper provides a consistent and asymptotically normal estimator for the intercept of a semiparametrically estimated sample selection model. The estimator uses a decreasingly small fraction of all observations as the sample size goes to infinity, as in Heckman (1990). In the semiparametrics literature, estimation of the intercept typically has been subsumed in the nonparametric sample selection bias correction term. The estimation of the intercept, however, is important from an economic perspective. For instance, it permits one to determine the “wage gap” between unionized and nonunionized workers, decompose the wage differential between different socioeconomic groups (e.g., male-female and black-white), and …

Explaining The Labor Force Participation Of Women 20-24, Ray C. Fair, Diane J. Macunovich Mar 1996

Explaining The Labor Force Participation Of Women 20-24, Ray C. Fair, Diane J. Macunovich

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Between about the mid 1960s and the late 1970s there was a remarkable rise in the labor force participation of women and then a leveling off that has persisted through the mid 1990s. This paper attempts to explain the labor force participation of women 20-24 over this period. A “relative income” variable is constructed based on Easterlin’s (1980) relative income hypothesis, and this is found to be an important explanatory variable. Easterlin’s “cohort wage” hypothesis is also used in the analysis. The basic equation estimated does very well in various tests that were performed on it, and it appears to …

Why Do People Dislike Inflation?, Robert J. Shiller Mar 1996

Why Do People Dislike Inflation?, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A questionnaire survey was conducted to explore how people think about inflation, and what real problems they see it as causing. With results from 677 people, comparisons were made among people in the U.S., Germany, and Brazil, between young and old, and between economists and non-economists. Among non-economists in all countries, the largest concern with inflation appears to be that it lowers people’s standard of living. Non-economists appear often to believe in a sort of sticky-wage model, by which wages do not respond to inflationary shocks, shocks which are themselves perceived as caused by certain people or institutions acting badly. …
