On The Effect Of A Sill On Dense Water Formation In A Marginal Sea, Doroteaciro Iovino, Fiammetta Straneo, Michael A. Spall Jan 2008

On The Effect Of A Sill On Dense Water Formation In A Marginal Sea, Doroteaciro Iovino, Fiammetta Straneo, Michael A. Spall

Journal of Marine Research

The properties of water mass transformation in a semi-enclosed basin, separated from the open ocean by a sill and subject to surface cooling, are analyzed both theoretically and numerically using an ocean general circulation model. This study extends previous studies of convection in a marginal sea to the case with a sill. The sill has a strong impact on both the properties of the dense water formed in the interior and on those of the waters flowing out the marginal sea. It results in a colder interior and colder outflow compared to the case with no sill. Dynamically, this is …

Combined Effect Of Wind-Forcing And Isobath Divergence On Upwelling At Cape Bathurst, Beaufort Sea, William J. Williams, Eddy C. Carmack Jan 2008

Combined Effect Of Wind-Forcing And Isobath Divergence On Upwelling At Cape Bathurst, Beaufort Sea, William J. Williams, Eddy C. Carmack

Journal of Marine Research

Cape Bathurst is at the northeastern end of the Canadian Beaufort Shelf in the southeastern Beaufort Sea where the continental shelf abruptly ends at Amundsen Gulf. In this area, the steep slope east of the cape joins the relatively flat shelf immediately north of the cape leading to strong isobath divergence at the cape. Hydrographic and satellite data show upwelling of nutrient-rich, Pacific-origin water to the surface at Cape Bathurst when surface stress is upwelling-favorable for the Canadian Beaufort Shelf. We suggest that this enhanced upwelling is forced by the adjustment of the along-shelf flow (that is part of upwelling …

Assessing The Wind Field Over The Continental Shelf As A Resource For Electric Power, Richard W. Garvine, Willett Kempton Jan 2008

Assessing The Wind Field Over The Continental Shelf As A Resource For Electric Power, Richard W. Garvine, Willett Kempton

Journal of Marine Research

To assess the wind power resources of a large continental shelf area, we analyze the 18-year hourly wind records from meteorological stations in the US Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB), comparing areas of coast, estuary, and open shelf. We calculate winds at turbine hub height for the sea breeze compared with synoptic winds and, for each type of site, we compare the seasonal and daily phase match to electrical load. To improve large-scale ocean power resource calculations, we derive an iterative algorithm to determine the surface roughness coefficient (z0). Our method calculates z0 for specific times and …

Shelfbreak Frontal Structure And Processes North Of Cape Hatteras In Winter, Glen Gawarkiewicz, James Churchill, Frank Bahr, Chris Linder, Craig Marquette Jan 2008

Shelfbreak Frontal Structure And Processes North Of Cape Hatteras In Winter, Glen Gawarkiewicz, James Churchill, Frank Bahr, Chris Linder, Craig Marquette

Journal of Marine Research

The circulation north of Cape Hatteras is complicated by the proximity of the shelfbreak front, the Gulf Stream, and convergent shelf flow from the Middle and South Atlantic Bights. A three-week cruise in this region in January/February, 2005 was undertaken in order to study the structure of the shelfbreak front as it terminates near Cape Hatteras and to quantify the freshwater transport from the Middle Atlantic Bight shelf into the Gulf Stream. Two strongly contrasting conditions were identified. Early in the cruise, the Gulf Stream directly abutted the shelfbreak at Cape Hatteras and drove a northward flow over the continental …

Energetics In Delaware Bay: Comparison Of Two Box Models With Observations, Ana E. Rice, Michael M. Whitney, Richard W. Garvine, Pablo Huq Jan 2008

Energetics In Delaware Bay: Comparison Of Two Box Models With Observations, Ana E. Rice, Michael M. Whitney, Richard W. Garvine, Pablo Huq

Journal of Marine Research

A corrected version of an unstratified box model of potential energy anomaly , initially developed by Garvine and Whitney (2006), and a new two-layer box model that allows for stratified and well-mixed conditions are applied to Delaware Bay. The models are applied for the Garvine and Whitney (2006) 1988-1994 study period and in Spring 2003; however, only model results of potential energy anomaly from the latter period are compared to in situ observations obtained outside the bay mouth. Unstratified model results for the two study periods reveal that the river discharge (Ω1) is the largest potential energy anomaly …

Magnetic Resonance Findings Of Exaggerated Fluid In Facet Joints Predicts Instability, Kimberly Anne Schinnerer Jan 2008

Magnetic Resonance Findings Of Exaggerated Fluid In Facet Joints Predicts Instability, Kimberly Anne Schinnerer

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of exaggerated fluid signal in lumbar facet joints on Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and evaluate the correlation of this finding with radiographic evidence of instability. One hundred and thirty-four consecutive lumbar MRIs obtained by a single surgeon over a 2-year period were selected for review. Studies were evaluated for exaggerated fluid (defined as greater than one millimeter) between the articular surfaces of the facets on axial views. Standing plain films of all patients were then evaluated to determine the incidence of spondylolisthesis for patients with and without exaggerated fluid in …

Worms As Wedges: Effects Of Sediment Mechanics On Burrowing Behavior, Kelly M. Dorgan, Sanjay R. Arwade, Peter A. Jumars Jan 2008

Worms As Wedges: Effects Of Sediment Mechanics On Burrowing Behavior, Kelly M. Dorgan, Sanjay R. Arwade, Peter A. Jumars

Journal of Marine Research

Recent studies document linear elastic response of muddy marine sediments to load and deformation on temporal and spatial scales relevant to animal movement, with burrowers making openings for movement in such sediments by fracture. Cracks propagate through linear elastic solids in mode I (opening-mode crack growth) when the stress intensity factor (KI) at the crack tip exceeds the material's fracture toughness (KIc). Fracture mechanics depend on material stiffness as well as fracture toughness, and we prepared a range of transparent gels that varied in stiffness and fracture toughness to assess the dependence of burrowing …

Evaluating Salt-Fingering Theories, R. Inoue, E. Kunze, L. St. Laurent, R. W. Schmitt, J. M. Toole Jan 2008

Evaluating Salt-Fingering Theories, R. Inoue, E. Kunze, L. St. Laurent, R. W. Schmitt, J. M. Toole

Journal of Marine Research

The NATRE fine- and microstructure data set is revisited to test salt-finger amplitude theories. Dependences of the mixing efficiency Γ, microscale buoyancy Reynolds number Re and thermal Cox number CxT on 5-m density ratio Rρ and gradient Richardson number Ri are examined. The observed mixing efficiency is too high to be explained by linear fastest-growing fingers but can be reproduced by wavenumbers 0.5-0.9 times lower than the fastest-growing wavenumber. Constraining these fingers with a hybrid wave/finger Froude number or a finger Reynolds number cannot reproduce the observed trends with Rρ or Ri, respectively. This suggests that …

Influence Of Advective Bio-Irrigation On Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In Sandy Sediments, Taehee Na, Britta Gribsholt, Oleksiy S. Galaktionov, Tongsup Lee, Filip J. R. Meysman Jan 2008

Influence Of Advective Bio-Irrigation On Carbon And Nitrogen Cycling In Sandy Sediments, Taehee Na, Britta Gribsholt, Oleksiy S. Galaktionov, Tongsup Lee, Filip J. R. Meysman

Journal of Marine Research

In sandy sediments, the burrow ventilation activity of benthic macrofauna can generate substantial advective flows within the sediment surrounding their burrows. Here we investigated the effects of such advective bio-irrigation on carbon and nitrogen cycling in sandy sediments. To this end, we combined a range of complementary experimental and modelling approaches in a microcosm study of the lugworm Arenicola marina (Polychaeta: Annelida). Bio-irrigation rates were determined using uranine as a tracer, while benthic fluxes of oxygen (O2), total carbon dioxide (TCO2), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (NH4+, ΣNO2− + NO3−) …

Ocean Current Observations From Nares Strait To The West Of Greenland: Interannual To Tidal Variability And Forcing, Andreas Münchow, Humfrey Melling Jan 2008

Ocean Current Observations From Nares Strait To The West Of Greenland: Interannual To Tidal Variability And Forcing, Andreas Münchow, Humfrey Melling

Journal of Marine Research

During 2003–06, as part of the Arctic Sub-Arctic Ocean Flux (ASOF) experiment, an array of oceansensing instruments was deployed at 80.5N latitude to investigate the flux of seawater from the Arctic Ocean via Nares Strait, the pathway to the west of Greenland. Three-year measurements of current from this experiment provide, for the first time at periods longer than a single season, the seawater flux and its variability via this important pathway. Below 30-m depth the average flux of volume 2003–06 was 0.57±0.09 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s–1) southward over a 38-km wide section reaching …

Mean Energy Balance In The Tropical Pacific Ocean, Jaclyn N. Brown, Alexey V. Fedorov Jan 2008

Mean Energy Balance In The Tropical Pacific Ocean, Jaclyn N. Brown, Alexey V. Fedorov

Journal of Marine Research

The maintenance of the ocean general circulation requires energy input from the wind. Previous studies estimate that the mean rate of wind work (or wind power) acting on the surface currents over the global ocean amounts to 1.1 TW (1 TW = 1012 Watts), though values remain highly uncertain. By analyzing the output from a range of ocean-only models and data assimilations, we show that the tropical Pacific Ocean contributes around 0.2 to 0.4 TW, which is roughly half of the total tropical contribution. Not only does this wind power represent a significant fraction of the total global energy …

Estimating Exchange Rate Equations Using Estimated Expectations, Ray C. Fair Jan 2008

Estimating Exchange Rate Equations Using Estimated Expectations, Ray C. Fair

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper takes a somewhat different approach from the recent literature in estimating exchange rate equations. It assumes uncovered interest rate parity and models how expectations are formed. Agents are assumed to base their expectations of future interest rates and prices, which are needed in the determination of the exchange rate, on predictions from a ten equation VAR model. The overall model is estimated by FIML under model consistent expectations. The model generally does better than the random walk model, and its properties are consistent with observed effects on exchange rates from surprise interest rate and price announcements. Also, the …

Molecular Genetic Approaches To Disease Of Neural Development, Mohamad Bydon

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study utilized novel genetic techniques in order to find causative gene mutations that underlie diseases of neural development. Our laboratory has collected 175 cases of malformations of cortical development (MCD) from the United States and Europe. Four of these cases are the focus of this manuscript: two familial cases of infantile neuroaxonal dystrophy (INAD), a familial case of hereditary spastic paraparesis (HSP), and a sporadic case of Greig cephalopolysyndactyly (GCPS) and cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs). The techniques utilized to study the affected patients include microarray-based single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping and copy number variation (CNV) analysis, both of which …

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Axon Guidance And Neurite Outgrowth, Lu Anne Velayo Dinglasan Jan 2008

The Role Of Matrix Metalloproteinases In Axon Guidance And Neurite Outgrowth, Lu Anne Velayo Dinglasan

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Axons navigating the complex environment of the developing CNS use extracellular guidance cues to help find their correct synaptic target. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a family of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes, have been shown to regulate axon guidance by degrading extracellular matrix (ECM) or by cleaving guidance cues and their receptors. The olfactory system is an excellent model for studying the role of MMPs in axon guidance due to its capacity for continuous nerve regeneration and topographic maintenance during synaptic targeting. I hypothesized that MMPs may play a role in guiding olfactory sensory neurons to their correct glomerular target by sculpting the …

Nonobstetric Laparoscopy Versus Laparotomy During Pregnancy: Maternal And Fetal Outcomes, Jeannine Ruby

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to compare maternal and fetal outcomes between nonobstetric laparoscopy and laparotomy during pregnancy at Yale-New Haven Hospital. A retrospective chart review was conducted of all nonobstetric intraabdominal surgeries during pregnancy at Yale-New Haven Hospital between 1987 and 2007. Of 159 potential cases, 103 cases (57 laparoscopies, 46 laparotomies) fit the criteria for analysis. Data were collected for the maternal surgical admission, maternal delivery admission, and infant outcome for both groups, and were then analyzed using Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) Version 9.1. There was no difference in age or BMI between groups. Mean gestational age …

Older Adults' Understanding Of Cardiovascular Risk And Preventive Medication Benefit, Elizabeth R. Wahl Jan 2008

Older Adults' Understanding Of Cardiovascular Risk And Preventive Medication Benefit, Elizabeth R. Wahl

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Medication decision making in older adults with multiple chronic conditions is complicated; communication between patients and physicians to establish concordant treatment goals can enhance this process. While patients' ability to make informed decisions about treatment priorities depends on their ability to understand the risks and benefits of medications and the likelihood of disease outcomes, patients' knowledge of medication-related benefits is unexplored. We examined older adults' estimation of their 10-year risk of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, and the degree to which they thought common medications were able to prevent these outcomes. 150 male veterans age 65 or older and taking …

Optimal Resource Extraction Contracts Under Threat Of Expropriation, Eduardo Engel, Ronald Fischer Jan 2008

Optimal Resource Extraction Contracts Under Threat Of Expropriation, Eduardo Engel, Ronald Fischer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The government contracts with a foreign firm to extract a natural resource that requires an upfront investment and which faces price uncertainty. In states where profits are high, there is a likelihood of expropriation, which generates a social cost that increases with the expropriated value. In this environment, the planner’s optimal contract avoids states with high probability of expropriation. The contract can be implemented via a competitive auction with reasonable informational requirements. The bidding variable is a cap on the present value of discounted revenues, and the firm with the lowest bid wins the contract. The basic framework is extended …
