For a sigma hole induced on a terminal atom, such as a halogen atom (X) in a molecule R-X, it is commonly expected that the maximum potential in that sigma hole will arise along the extension of the R-X bond, opposite the overlap region. We find, however, that for the majority of group 1 halides (MX) that expectation fails. Conventional sigma holes appear on Na in its halides and hydrides, but not so for M = K, Rb, or Cs. Instead, a sigma ring─a latitudinal ring maximum─is observed in the surface potentials of those molecules. That anomaly is examined, and …

Perpetual Statehood Among Rising Tides: The Case Of Tuvalu And The Future Of Statehood, Sovereignty, And Maritime Bounds In The Face Of Unprecedented Climate Crisis, Caroline Crawford
International Law Journal
As climate change threatens the physical existence of low-lying island nations, the question of whether a country can retain statehood without territory becomes increasingly urgent. Tuvalu, facing potential submersion by 2050, has amended its constitution to declare perpetual statehood, challenging traditional international legal definitions that link sovereignty to physical territory. This Article examines the legal implications of Tuvalu’s declaration and explores whether current frameworks, including the Montevideo Convention, selfgovernance, the presumption of continuity, the Lotus principle, and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (“UNCLOS”), can accommodate such a claim. It advocates for legal innovations such as …

Life is one of the most fascinating features of the physical world. Despite centuries of scientific study, experts still disagree about the definition, and even the possibility or utility of a definition, of this field. In a recent paper, we used AI to analyze the conceptual space formed by definitions of life given by a select set of modern workers in the life sciences and related fields. However, some of the most interesting material emerged as real-time conversations among those polled. In order to ensure that these ideas are not lost to the peer-reviewed scientific record, we here provide a …

Online Decoding Of Rat Self-Paced Locomotion Speed From Eeg Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Alejandro De Miguel, Nelson Totah, Uri Maoz
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Objective. Accurate and reliable neural decoding of locomotion holds promise for advancing clinical applications such as rehabilitation and prosthetic control, as well as for understanding neural correlates of action. Recent studies have demonstrated successful decoding of locomotion kinematics across species in motorized treadmill settings. However, efforts to decode locomotion speed directly and continuously in more natural contexts—where pace is self-selected rather than externally imposed—are scarce, and those that exist generally achieve only modest accuracy and require intracranial implants. Here, we aim to decode self-paced locomotion speed non-invasively and continuously using cortex-wide electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from rats. Approach. We introduce an …

Bioactive surface modification of degradable zinc (Zn) vascular implants is essential for controlling biodegradation and supporting vascular healing. Here, we describe the fabrication of polydopamine coating (PDA-Cu) containing up to ∼0.8 wt % Cu ions on Zn substrates using an immersion-assisted mussel-inspired polymerization strategy. The coating is composed of densely packed PDA-Cu nanospheres with diameters of ∼130-170 nm, exhibiting an even distribution of Cu ions within the PDA matrix via Cu-catechol coordination. Thirty-day leaching tests confirmed a steady release of 0.01-0.04 ppm of Cu ions per 5 days from Zn/PDA-Cu samples in Hank's balanced salt solution (HBSS). In vitro nitric …

Risk, Trust, And Medical Decision-Making: Perinatal Care Among Patients And Providers In South Florida, Isabella Viera
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This thesis examines how structural inequality shapes the experience of perinatal care among pregnant individuals and healthcare providers in South Florida, with particular attention to how risk is perceived and communicated, how trust between patients and providers is built or eroded, and how medical decision-making unfolds under conditions of structural vulnerability. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork conducted between October 2025 and April 2026, supplemented by a quantitative analysis of low-birth-weight rates across all 67 Florida counties, the project analyzes how risk is defined, communicated, and lived across community-based prenatal organizations, online educational platforms, and in-depth provider and patient interviews. The …

Early-career researchers (ECRs) are at the forefront of producing the knowledge and solutions needed to address contemporary ocean challenges. Their work is often highly inter- and transdisciplinary, generating insights that are critical for informed decision-making, and effective and equitable marine governance. Yet, despite this potential for impact, many ECRs lack access to the tools, training, and institutional support necessary to engage meaningfully with governance processes. Such structural complexities are further compounded by practical constraints that ECRs experience such as short project timelines and limited networks, making engagement with governance particularly intimidating and/or difficult for ECRs. This commentary seeks to empower …

Um–Protoshare: Unet-Guided, Multi-Scale Shared Prototypes For Interpretable Brain Tumour Classification Using Multi-Sequence 3d Mri, Ali Golbaf, Vivek Singh, Swen Gaudl, Emmanuel Ifeachor
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Deep learning shows strong promise in brain tumour classification using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), although limited interpretability constrains clinical translation. Most interpretability methods are post-hoc and yield visual attribution maps that are only weakly connected to the decision process. Clinicians prefer decisions built from evidence they can recognise and verify on MRI, rather than post-hoc explanations. Case-based models embed reasoning by comparing image evidence with learned prototypes, yielding “this looks like that” rationales at decision time and mirroring clinical reasoning. Building on this paradigm, we introduce UM–ProtoShare, which compares the input multi-sequence 3D brain MRI with a bank of shared, …

When former cohabitants ask courts to distribute property at the end of a nonmarital relationship, they usually lose—even when the partners were as economically intertwined as spouses. Family law scholars have traditionally criticized these cases in terms of longstanding gendered ideas about family relationships. This Article proposes a complementary account at the intersection of feminist and private law theory: that the law of voluntary obligations is not adequately developed to protect intimates’ cooperation. Although marital status law aims to safeguard thick cooperation between spouses and contract law captures a range of more market-based cooperation, for historically contingent reasons, little doctrine …
Detecting And Correcting Systematic Image Distortion In Digital Atomic-Resolution Images From Crystals: Projected Symmetry Of Graphite Calibration Samples For Scanning Prove Microscopy And Subperiodic Crystals For Aberration-Corrected Transmission Electron Microscopy, Tyler Michael Bortel
Dissertations and Theses
Though it is an impressive technology, Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) produces images commonly plagued by small systematic errors, often called "drift". These effects have a variety of causes, most notably nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric actuator tubes responsible for the positioning of the scanning probe or sample. One result of these distortions is a potential incorrect classification of the symmetry groups and projected Laue classes of recorded images from crystals—made possible by using recently developed objective methods. An implementation of a known method for detecting and correcting these errors is presented. This method operates strictly in Fourier space so as to …

Wildfires in California increasingly threaten communities and ecosystems. However, comprehensive estimation of fire dynamics and fuel structure remains limited. Recent advances in Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology and high-spatial-resolution mapping have provided increasingly important tools for estimating wildfire fuel-height loss across fuel types. This study used a one-year Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV) time series to quantify fuel-height loss and vegetation regrowth associated with a prescribed upslope canyon fire near Salinas, California, USA. Multispectral, infrared, and visible UAV imagery collected before, during, and after burning was used to generate orthomosaic, digital surface models (DSMs), fuel-type classifications, and surface-volume estimates. To enable …

Tissue microenvironments shape lymphocyte differentiation to align immune function with local physiological demands. Uterine natural killer (NK) cells are critical for reproductive success, yet the molecular cues in the uterus that instruct their specialized identities remain incompletely understood. Here, we identify a TGF-β-dependent differentiation pathway by which circulating conventional NK cells convert into uterine tissue-resident NK cells during murine pregnancy. Loss of TGF-β receptor II expression in

Although Article 1243 of the Civil Code limits compensation for breach of contract to material damages, judicial practice reveals a disparity in addressing immaterial damage claims. This study analyzes judicial considerations in the Semarang District Court (housing dispute) and South Jakarta District Court (bag business dispute) decisions using Economic Analysis of Law and Gustav Radbruch’s Legal Philosophy. The results indicate a rational Functional Dualism. The Semarang Court adopted a progressive stance by granting the claim for substantive Justice, justified by the Radbruch Formula to correct injustice regarding basic human needs. Conversely, the South Jakarta Court adopted a positivistic stance by …

The legal definition of a contract is a legal act whereby two or more parties bind themselves, originating from Article 1313 KUHPerdata In civil law, there are many classifications of contracts which must satisfy four essential conditions for validity: capacity, consent, a specific subject matter, and a lawful cause. When a contract is breached by one of the parties, it is termed breach of contract. It is categorized into three types: total non-performance of the agreement, improper performance of what was promised, or late performance by the debtor. In cases where a party is harmed by the default, that party …

As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in employment practices, particularly in hiring and screening, the need for robust regulatory frameworks is urgent. This Article focuses on the growing use of AI in workplace decision-making, highlighting the risks of algorithmic bias and discrimination. It argues that while the United States lacks a unified legal approach to governing AI in employment, the European Union (EU) has taken a more proactive and comprehensive stance. Through instruments like the proposed EU AI Act and existing data protection laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the EU imposes meaningful obligations on employers …
Blurred Lines: How Mandatory Arbitration Clauses In Termsof Service Agreements Undermine Privacy Law Frameworks, Owen Curnin
Blurred Lines: How Mandatory Arbitration Clauses In Termsof Service Agreements Undermine Privacy Law Frameworks, Owen Curnin
Student Journal of Information Privacy Law
Following the birth of the Federal Arbitration Act–which made arbitration agreements valid, enforceable, and irrevocable in courts of law–mandatory arbitration clause use in commercial, consumer, and employment contracts exploded. These types of clauses require parties to submit all disputes arising out of or related to a contract to an impartial third party. This third party, known as the arbitrator, reviews the facts, listens to the parties’ arguments, and makes a final, binding decision resolving the dispute. Corporations have long relied on mandatory arbitration clauses to resolve disputes privately and confidentially, often hoping to avoid the public scrutiny and accountability associated …

Legal Deserts Over Time, Cory L. Dodds
Legal Deserts Over Time, Cory L. Dodds
Maine Law Review
Legal deserts—counties with exceptionally low attorney availability—shape housing stability, personal safety, health outcomes, and economic security in rural communities. Yet, national scholarship has not yet determined whether attorney scarcity is transient or durable and relies largely on cross-sectional snapshots and population-based headcounts benchmarked to the American Bar Association’s (ABA) threshold of one attorney per 1,000 residents. These measures can obscure temporal dynamics, overstate functional supply, and embed contested normative assumptions about adequacy. This Article offers a national, longitudinal, and definition-sensitive analysis of legal deserts using county-level data from the forty-eight contiguous states at three observation points. Attorney supply is measured …

Shadow-Channel Verification For Multi-Body Model Fusion: An Independent-Recompute Witness For Detecting Silent Value-Faults In Interpolated Language-Model Inference, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes a system and method for verifying the intermediate quantities used in multi-body language-model fusion by means of an independent recomputation channel — a "shadow channel" — that runs parallel to the primary fusion pipeline. In multi-body fusion, a primary model (e.g., a transformer language model) is combined with one or more auxiliary bodies (e.g., an n-gram count model and a nearest-neighbour/datastore retrieval model) by interpolating their per-position probabilities. Conventional fusion consumes each body's reported probability directly and is therefore blind to two failure classes: (a) crash-faults, in which an auxiliary quantity becomes non-finite (e.g., a softmax …

The Vanishing Customer: A Framework For Analyzing Benefit–Burden Decoupling In Attention-Economy And Ai-Companion Transactions, David Lee Wise, Avan Lee Wise
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes an analytical framework for identifying and evaluating benefit–burden decoupling in digital-service transactions, with particular application to attention-economy platforms and conversational AI-companion systems. The framework treats two observed phenomena — the relocation of the paying party from customer to product (wherein a user's attention, data, or disclosure is monetized while the user is denied the status of a served customer), and the relocation of responsibility from maker to user (wherein a provider retains the financial benefit of a design or deployment decision while attempting, via terms-of-service disclaimers and "sole-risk" framing, to shed the decision's downstream burdens) — as …
Proactive Make-Before-Break Traffic Steering In Evpn Multi-Homing Using A Bgp Extended Community For Pre-Failure Link Degradation Signaling, Anonymous

A method and system for proactive Make-Before-Break (MBB) traffic protection in an Ethernet Virtual Private Network (EVPN) is disclosed. A first Provider Edge (PE) router monitors a physical-layer Bit Error Rate (BER) on a link to a multi-homed Customer Edge (CE) device. When the measured BER crosses a configurable threshold while the link remains operationally up, the first PE router originates a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) UPDATE carrying a new transitive Extended Community that signals link degradation, the BGP UPDATE being attached to an EVPN Type 1 Ethernet Auto-Discovery per-Ethernet Segment route. Remote PE routers receiving the Extended Community migrate …

In Spring, Texas, there is a house that has flooded twenty times due to heavy rain and flooding, resulting in National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) payouts totaling over $912,000 to cover the repairs. This house’s current value is $42,000, so the payouts have dwarfed its value by over nineteen times. The story of this home is indicative of an ongoing crisis regarding the NFIP, but also a larger crisis of how we manage the risks of flooding in the United States. Flooding causes more damage in the United States than any other severe weather-related event, costing an average of $5 …

This article argues that what makes the difference in success between these two regimes is how strictly the scientific advice underlying catch limits the advice is adhered to, and the influences allowed unto decisionmakers in the catch limit negotiation process. Whereas the United States uses the scientific advice about the MSY as a strict upper limit in determining annual catch limits, the EU does not. This allows stakeholders in the EU’s CFP governance, in particular fishing industry actors, to influence regulators to raise TACs above adequately precautionary levels in the name of “balancing” sustainable fishing with short-term economic interests. The …

In August 2025, the China Institute for Marine Affairs (CIMA) conducted a legal assessment of U.S. views on freedom of navigation. CIMA concluded that U.S. views on freedom of navigation lack “a basis in international law,” “seriously distort[] the interpretation and development of international law,” and embody “distinct illegality, unreasonableness, and double standards.” Part 1 of the assessment provides an overview of U.S. views on freedom of navigation. Part 2 “analyzes the gaps between U.S. perceptions of navigational rights and related practices and the rules of international law.” Part 3 “analyzes the legality of U.S. restrictions on the rights of …

Shipping’s decarbonization depends not only on adopting alternative fuels but also on the reliability of the monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems that underpin compliance. Ammonia, hydrogen, methanol, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) each introduce distinctive risks of error at the stages of certification, custody transfer, onboard measurement, and verification. At the same time, maritime law is increasingly data-driven. The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) depend on reported fuel-use data, while the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) and FuelEU Maritime Regulation impose direct financial penalties for inaccurate reporting. Drug-coated balloons are an emerging strategy for coronary revascularization. Despite their increasing use, the comparative efficacy of sirolimus- versus paclitaxel-coated balloons (SCB vs PCB) remains uncertain. This updated meta-analysis evaluated clinical and angiographic outcomes of SCB and PCB in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect was performed on August 28, 2025. Studies directly comparing SCB and PCB were included. The primary endpoint was target lesion failure (TLF), which was defined as cardiac death, target vessel myocardial infarction (TVMI), or target lesion revascularization (TLR). On follow-up angiography, secondary endpoints consisted of minimal lumen diameter (MLD), …
