No Observed Adverse Effects: Developing Neurons, Organophosphate Insecticides, And The 1996 Food Quality Protection Act, Brendan R. Jackson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Physicians are familiar with organophosphates (OPs) as a classic, though obscure, cause of cholinergic poisoning. Many opportunities for human exposure existsixty million pounds of OPs are applied as insecticides to sixty million acres of U.S. land each year, and, until recently, over one-fifth of Americans used these chemicals in their homes. Most physicians, however, still know little about the dangers that these pesticides pose to the developing nervous system. By the late 1980s, toxicologists increasingly recognized that toxicants such as lead and mercury, even at doses well-below the level required to cause symptomatic poisoning, could induce subtle, yet permanent, neurological …

Do Local Economic Development Programs Work? Evidence From The Federal Empowerment Zone Program, Matias Busso, Patrick Kline Feb 2008

Do Local Economic Development Programs Work? Evidence From The Federal Empowerment Zone Program, Matias Busso, Patrick Kline

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper evaluates the impact of Round I of the federal urban Empowerment Zone (EZ) program on neighborhood level labor and housing market outcomes over the period 1994-2000. Using four decades of Census data in conjunction with information on the proposed boundaries of rejected EZs, we find that neighborhoods receiving EZ designation experienced substantial improvements in labor market conditions and moderate increases in rents relative to rejected and future zones. These effects were accompanied by small changes in the demographic composition of the neighborhoods, though evidence from disaggregate Census tabulations suggests that these changes account for little of the observed …

Death Of Three Loop Current Rings, B. L. Lipphardt Jr., A. C. Poje, A. D. Kirwan Jr., L. Kantha, M. Zweng Jan 2008

Death Of Three Loop Current Rings, B. L. Lipphardt Jr., A. C. Poje, A. D. Kirwan Jr., L. Kantha, M. Zweng

Journal of Marine Research

The life cycle of large anticyclonic rings in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is widely described by pinch off from the Loop Current, migration across the Gulf and eventual spin down along the western slope. Extensive observational and modeling efforts provide a relatively consistent picture of rings pinching off from the Loop Current and of complex interaction between anticyclones and cyclones driven by bathymetry along the western and northwestern shelf. The observational record for Loop Current rings (LCRs) during the intermediate period of westward translation is less clear. A number of studies recognize distinct anomalies in LCR characteristics in deep …

Hydrography And Flow In The Lucky Strike Segment Of The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, A. M. Thurnherr, G. Reverdin, P. Bouruet-Aubertot, L. C. St. Laurent, A. Vangriesheim, V. Ballu Jan 2008

Hydrography And Flow In The Lucky Strike Segment Of The Mid-Atlantic Ridge, A. M. Thurnherr, G. Reverdin, P. Bouruet-Aubertot, L. C. St. Laurent, A. Vangriesheim, V. Ballu

Journal of Marine Research

The Lucky Strike segment between 37 and 38N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the focus of the international MoMAR program to monitor seafloor-spreading processes. During the GRAVILUCK cruise in August 2006, hydrographic, velocity and light-scattering data were collected in the rift valley at Lucky Strike in order to investigate the regional dynamics and to provide background information for the monitoring effort. The survey observations reveal a remarkably simple dynamical setting dominated by persistent northward flow transporting ≈0.2 Sv of water along the rift valley. Approximately half of this transport must upwell within a deep basin that occupies the northern half …

Interannual Variability In The Seasonal Cycle Of Chlorophyll In The Leeuwin Current Off The Southwest Western Australian Coast, Jim E. Greenwood, Karline Soetaert Jan 2008

Interannual Variability In The Seasonal Cycle Of Chlorophyll In The Leeuwin Current Off The Southwest Western Australian Coast, Jim E. Greenwood, Karline Soetaert

Journal of Marine Research

The seasonal cycle of surface chlorophyll in the Leeuwin Current off the southwest Western Australian coast is characterized by low austral summer concentrations that increase during the austral autumn and winter. Results from a one-dimensional numerical model show that a combination of solar heating and nutrient poor surface waters during the summer can restrict plankton growth to the base of the euphotic zone resulting in low surface chlorophyll concentrations that are consistent with observations. The model also suggests that increased vertical mixing caused by surface cooling can explain some of the observed increases in surface chlorophyll that occur during the …

Drying Effects On Decomposition Of Salt Marsh Sediment And On Lysine Sorption, Zhanfei Liu, Cindy Lee, Robert C. Aller Jan 2008

Drying Effects On Decomposition Of Salt Marsh Sediment And On Lysine Sorption, Zhanfei Liu, Cindy Lee, Robert C. Aller

Journal of Marine Research

Sorption of organic compounds by coastal marine sediments is strongly affected by dry–wet cycling. In this study, we determined how drying (and rewetting) sediment affected the decomposition rate of organic matter under both oxic and anoxic conditions, and how sorption changed with decomposition. Organic matter decomposition showed distinct patterns in dried, rewetted sediments compared to those that had never been dried, based on a comparison of ammonium production rates, OC/N ratios and total hydrolyzable amino acid (THAA) loss rates. Net ammonium production rates were 29 (oxic) and 44 μM/d (anoxic) in dried, rewetted sediment and 4 (oxic) and 13 μM/d …

Cross-Shelf Structure Of Coastal Upwelling: A Two —Dimensional Extension Of Ekman’S Theory And A Mechanism For Inner Shelf Upwelling Shut Down, Philippe Estrade, Patrick Marchesiello, Alain Colin De Verdière, Claude Roy Jan 2008

Cross-Shelf Structure Of Coastal Upwelling: A Two —Dimensional Extension Of Ekman’S Theory And A Mechanism For Inner Shelf Upwelling Shut Down, Philippe Estrade, Patrick Marchesiello, Alain Colin De Verdière, Claude Roy

Journal of Marine Research

Sea-surface temperature images of the coastal upwelling regions off Northwest Africa show that the core of upwelling is sometimes located far from the coast. This has been documented in three regions that share a common feature, namely a wide and shallow continental shelf. This upwelling feature plays a key role in the ecology of the Canary Current System. It creates an innerfront which provides retention for biological material, e.g. fish eggs and larvae, in the highly productive nearshore environment. An analytical model has been developed based on a two dimensional extension of Ekman's solution. The linear and steady response of …
