12 Tips For Implementing Peer Instruction In Medical Education, Dean Parmelee, Mary Jo Trout, Irina Overman, Michael P. Matott

Medical Education Faculty Publications

Peer Instruction (PI) is a vibrant instructional strategy, used successfully for over two decades in undergraduate physics and mathematics courses. It has had limited use and few publications in medical education. This 12 TIPS provides a focused review on the evidence supporting its use in higher education and rationale for its wider adoption in medical education. The authors detail important steps for its implementation with large classes. Based on several years of experience with PI in a US allopathic medical school, they feel that PI attends to core principles from the science of learning and provides students and faculty with …

Effects Of Neuronic Shutter Observed In The Eeg Alpha Rhythm, Kevin E. Alexander, Justin R. Estepp, Sherif M. Elbasiouny Sep 2020

Effects Of Neuronic Shutter Observed In The Eeg Alpha Rhythm, Kevin E. Alexander, Justin R. Estepp, Sherif M. Elbasiouny

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

The posterior alpha (α) rhythm, seen in human electroencephalogram (EEG), is posited to originate from cycling inhibitory/excitatory states of visual relay cells in the thalamus. These cycling states are thought to lead to oscillating visual sensitivity levels termed the “neuronic shutter effect.” If true, perceptual performance should be predictable by observed α phase (of cycling inhibitory/excitatory states) relative to the timeline of afferentiation onto the visual cortex. Here, we tested this hypothesis by presenting contrast changes at near perceptual threshold intensity through closed eyelids to 20 participants (balanced for gender) during times of spontaneous α oscillations. To more accurately and …

We investigated the variations in physician evaluation of skin photodamage based on a published photodamage scale. Of interest is the utility of a 10-level scale ranging from none and mild photodamage to actinic keratosis (AK). The dorsal forearms of 55 adult subjects with various amounts of photodamage were considered. Each forearm was independently evaluated by 15 board-certified dermatologists according to the Global Assessment Severity Scale ranging from 0 (less severe) to 9 (the most progressed stage of skin damage). Dermatologists rated the levels of photodamage based upon the photographs in blinded fashion. Results show substantial disagreement amongst the dermatologists on …

New Horizons is an annual training exercise designated for military medical professionals and civil engineers to assist partner nations of Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), as well as provide exceptional training to U.S. military members.1 In Spring of 2019, a gynecologic surgery readiness training exercise (SURGRETE) team composed of 16 joint-service military healthcare professionals, specifically including a fellowship-trained female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) surgeon, an FPMRS fellow, an obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) specialist, three OB/GYN residents, and additional anesthesia, nursing, and surgical technician support, traveled to Guyana to participate in the New Horizons global health exercise. The mission of the …

A Nonlinear Distortion Removal Based On Deep Neural Network For Underwater Acoustic Ofdm Communication With The Mitigation Of Peak To Average Power Ratio, Xuefei Ma, Waleed Raza, Zhiqiang Wu, Muhammad Bilal, Ziqi Zhou, Amir Ali Jul 2020

A Nonlinear Distortion Removal Based On Deep Neural Network For Underwater Acoustic Ofdm Communication With The Mitigation Of Peak To Average Power Ratio, Xuefei Ma, Waleed Raza, Zhiqiang Wu, Muhammad Bilal, Ziqi Zhou, Amir Ali

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Machine learning and deep learning algorithms have proved to be a powerful tool for developing data-driven signal processing algorithms for challenging engineering problems. This paper studies the modern machine learning algorithm for modeling nonlinear devices like power amplifiers (PAs) for underwater acoustic (UWA) orthogonal frequency divisional multiplexing (OFDM) communication. The OFDM system has a high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) in the time domain because the subcarriers are added coherently via inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). This causes a higher bit error rate (BER) and degrades the performance of the PAs; hence, it reduces the power efficiency. For long-range …

Flux Pinning Enhancements Of Yba2cu3o7-X With Nanosize Magnetic Additions, M. A. Sebastian, N. A. Pierce, I. Maartense, Gregory Kozlowski, T. J. Haugan

Physics Faculty Publications

Different methods of flux pinning are being tested world-wide to enhance critical currents (Ics) of high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) coated conductors exposed to high magnetic fields. Magnetic materials are interesting to consider as flux pinning additions because of their potential for very strong pinning strength. To our knowledge, there have been limited demonstrations of magnetic pinning additions to YBCO conductors. This paper describes the study of different M magnetic phase additions to YBCO including M = BaFe12O19, La0.67Ca0.33MnO3, and other oxide phases. Nanosize additions were incorporated by depositing multilayer (M/YBCO)N films to minimize degradation of Tc, and testing volume …

Prediction Of Feed Utilization Performance In Clarias Gariepinus Using Multiple Linear Regression In Machine Learning, Adekunle Oluwatosin Familusi

Journal of Bioresource Management

Machine learning models can be used to make predictions about nutrient utilization performance index using available proximate analysis data on feed composition. Data from similar experiments on nutrient utilization performance was used to fit a multiple linear regression model for the prediction of four performance indexes. The Specific Growth Rate and percentage inclusion with strength of 0.57 was noted along with a negative relationship between protein efficiency and protein content. A negative relationship between Nitrogen Free Extract (NFE) and Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) at NFE content ≥25 % was observed. PER was predicted with 85 % accuracy, while Weight Gain …

Developing An Equivalent Solid Material Model For Bcc Lattice Cell Structures Involving Vertical And Horizontal Struts, Tahseen A. Alwattar, Ahsan Mian Jun 2020

Developing An Equivalent Solid Material Model For Bcc Lattice Cell Structures Involving Vertical And Horizontal Struts, Tahseen A. Alwattar, Ahsan Mian

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In this study, a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice unit cell occupied inside a frame structure to create a so-called “InsideBCC” is considered. The equivalent quasi-isotropic properties required to describe the material behavior of the InsideBCC unit cell are equivalent Young’s modulus ( E e ) , equivalent shear modulus ( G e ) , and equivalent Poisson’s ratio ( ν e ) . The finite element analysis (FEA) based computational approach is used to simulate and calculate the mechanical responses of InsideBCC unit cell, which are the mechanical responses of the equivalent solid. Two separates finite element models are then …
