Eeg Data Analysis Using Artifact Separation, Chelsey Credlebaugh, Matthew Middendorf, Michael Hoepf, Scott Galster Jan 2015

Eeg Data Analysis Using Artifact Separation, Chelsey Credlebaugh, Matthew Middendorf, Michael Hoepf, Scott Galster

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

It has been postulated that physiological measures can be a positive indicator of mental workload. One such measure is the electroencephalogram (EEG). It is well known that the EEG signal is easily affected by artifacts. One prominent source of artifacts is eye activity, including blinks and saccades. These contaminates coincide directly with EEG signals, making it difficult to obtain artifact-free data. This paper discusses a methodology that performs artifact separation at the data analysis stage. This technique was used to analyze data from a recent experiment. Workload was manipulated by varying the difficulty of the primary task while responding to …

Kno.e.sis Publications

Knowledge bases have been used to improve performance in applications ranging from web search and event detection to entity recognition and disambiguation. More recently, knowledge bases have been used to analyze social data. A key challenge in social data analysis has been the identification of the geographic location of online users in a social network such as Twitter. Existing approaches to predict the location of users, based on their tweets, rely solely on social media features or probabilistic language models. These approaches are supervised and require large training dataset of geo-tagged tweets to build their models. As most Twitter users …

Mining Behavior Of Citizen Sensor Communities To Improve Cooperation With Organizational Actors, Hemant Purohit

Kno.e.sis Publications

Web 2.0 (social media) provides a natural platform for dynamic emergence of citizen (as) sensor communities, where the citizens generate content for sharing information and engaging in discussions. Such a citizen sensor community (CSC) has stated or implied goals that are helpful in the work of formal organizations, such as an emergency management unit, for prioritizing their response needs. This research addresses questions related to design of a cooperative system of organizations and citizens in CSC. Prior research by social scientists in a limited offline and online environment has provided a foundation for research on cooperative behavior challenges, including ‘ …

Teachers’ Attitudes And Perceptions Of Inclusion In Relation To Grade Level And Years Of Experience, Marsha C. Barnes, Trudi Gaines

Electronic Journal for Inclusive Education

The practice of inclusion is increasingly evident in today’s schools and expectations continue to rise with respect to how all students perform on high-stakes standardized testing. Positive attitudes about inclusion and concomitant lower stress levels among teachers would provide the most conducive environment for positive student outcomes. The authors investigated the relationship between teacher grade levels, years of experience, and their attitudes and perceptions toward inclusion. It was hypothesized that teachers of lower grade levels and with fewer years of experience would have more negative attitudes toward inclusion. A previously developed survey instrument was used to gather data from teachers …

Value Oriented Big Data Processing With Applications, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

We discuss the nature of Big Data and address the role of semantics in analyzing and processing Big Data that arises in the context of Physical-Cyber-Social Systems. To handle Volume, we advocate semantic perception that can convert low-level observational data to higher-level abstractions more suitable for decision- making. To handle Variety, we resort to semantic models and annotations of data so that intelligent processing can be done independent of heterogeneity of data formats and media. To handle Velocity, we seek to use continuous semantics capability to dynamically create event or situation specific models and recognize relevant new concepts, entities and …

Avionics Touch Screen In Turbulence: Simulation For Design, Sylvain Hourlier, Xavier Servantie Jan 2015

Avionics Touch Screen In Turbulence: Simulation For Design, Sylvain Hourlier, Xavier Servantie

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

As touch screens are everywhere in the consumer market Thales has launched in depth evaluations on their introduction in the cockpit. One of the challenges is to verify its compatibility with in flight use under turbulence conditions, including light, moderate and severe. In flight accelerometer collections were performed to provide us with a baseline for choosing between possible simulation solutions. Thales recognized early on the need for such a tool as it would enable us to define recommendations for our HMI designs. The objectives were first to validate specific complex touch/gestures using all the potential of touch interactions for novel …

Individual Differences In The Use Of Remote Vision Stereoscopic Displays, Marc Winterbottom Jan 2015

Individual Differences In The Use Of Remote Vision Stereoscopic Displays, Marc Winterbottom

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With the introduction of the next generation of aerial refueling tankers, such as the KC-46, boom operators will use relatively recently developed indirect view stereo displays in place of direct view crew stations. Existing vision standards for boom operators were developed during the 1950s and may not be adequate for medical screening for KC-46 boom operators. Mild anomalies in binocular alignment, currently allowed by USAF vision standards, may permit stereopsis, but may also predispose those individuals to visual complaints such as eye-strain or headaches when viewing stereoscopic displays.

The purpose of this research was to measure individual differences in performance …

The Implications Of Hiv Treatment On The Hiv-Malaria Coinfection Dynamics: A Modeling Perspective, F. Nyabadza, B. T. Bekele, Megan A. Rúa, D. M. Malonza, N. Chiduku, M. Kgosimore

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Most hosts harbor multiple pathogens at the same time in disease epidemiology. Multiple pathogens have the potential for interaction resulting in negative impacts on host fitness or alterations in pathogen transmission dynamics. In this paper we develop a mathematical model describing the dynamics of HIV-malaria coinfection. Additionally, we extended our model to examine the role treatment (of malaria and HIV) plays in altering populations’ dynamics. Our model consists of 13 interlinked equations which allow us to explore multiple aspects of HIV-malaria transmission and treatment. We perform qualitative analysis of the model that includes positivity and boundedness of solutions. Furthermore, we …

Extracting City Traffic Events From Social Streams, Pramod Anantharam, Payam Barnaghi, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Cities are composed of complex systems with physical, cyber, and social components. Current works on extracting and understanding city events mainly rely on technology enabled infrastructure to observe and record events. In this work, we propose an approach to leverage citizen observations of various city systems and services such as traffic, public transport, water supply, weather, sewage, and public safety as a source of city events. We investigate the feasibility of using such textual streams for extracting city events from annotated text. We formalize the problem of annotating social streams such as microblogs as a sequence labeling problem. We present …

Understanding Social Effects In Online Networks, Huda Alhazmi, Swapna S. Gokhale, Derek Doran Jan 2015

Understanding Social Effects In Online Networks, Huda Alhazmi, Swapna S. Gokhale, Derek Doran

Kno.e.sis Publications

Understanding the motives behind people’s interactions online can offer sound bases to predict how a social network may evolve and also support a host of applications. We hypothesize that three offline social factors, namely, stature, relationship strength, and egocentricity may also play an important role in driving users’ interactions online. Therefore, we study the influence of these three social factors in online interactions by analyzing the transitivity in triads or three-way relationships among users. Analyzing transitivity through the lens of triad census for four popular social networks, namely, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Slashdot, we find that: (i) users’ interactions are …

Semantic Gateway As A Service Architecture For Iot Interoperability, Pratikkumar Desai, Amit P. Sheth, Pramod Anantharam Jan 2015

Semantic Gateway As A Service Architecture For Iot Interoperability, Pratikkumar Desai, Amit P. Sheth, Pramod Anantharam

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Internet of Things (IoT) is set to occupy a substantial component of future Internet. The IoT connects sensors and devices that record physical observations to applications and services of the Internet. As a successor to technologies such as RFID and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), the IoT has stumbled into vertical silos of proprietary systems, providing little or no interoperability with similar systems. As the IoT represents future state of the Internet, an intelligent and scalable architecture is required to provide connectivity between these silos, enabling discovery of physical sensors and interpretation of messages between things. This paper proposes a …

An Ecological Approach To The Supervisory Control Of Uav Swarms, Christian Fuchs, Clark Borst, Guido De Croon, Rene Van Paassen, Max Mulder Jan 2015

An Ecological Approach To The Supervisory Control Of Uav Swarms, Christian Fuchs, Clark Borst, Guido De Croon, Rene Van Paassen, Max Mulder

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

Advances in miniaturized computer technology have made it possible for a single Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to complete its mission autonomously. This also sparked interest in having swarms of UAVs that are cooperating as a team on a single mission. The level of automation involved in the control of UAVswarms will also change the role of the human operator. That is, instead of manually controlling the movements of the individual UAVs, the system operator will need to perform higher-level mission management tasks. However, most ground control stations are still tailored to the control of single UAVs by portraying raw flight …

Application Of Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization For Visualization And Quantification Of Human Gastrointestinal Microbiota, Alexander M. Gordon Jan 2015

Application Of Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization For Visualization And Quantification Of Human Gastrointestinal Microbiota, Alexander M. Gordon

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The microbiota of the human gastrointestinal tract is the focus of current research due to their role in human health and disease. Modern methods characterize the communities of gut microbiota through the use of culture independent techniques. Technologies such as microarrays and next generation sequencing (NGS) determine microbial profiles by analyzing the pool of 16S ribosomal small subunit RNA genes in the community. These techniques operate through the measurement of genomic content rather than through direct analysis of cells. This approach predisposes the methods to discrepancies and bias. In contrast, the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to analyze …

Direction Of Arrival Estimation Using Wideband Spectral Subspace Projection, Majid Shaik Jan 2015

Direction Of Arrival Estimation Using Wideband Spectral Subspace Projection, Majid Shaik

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Many areas such as Wireless Communication, Oil Mining, Radars, Sonar, and Seismic Exploration require the direction of arrival estimation (DOA) of wideband sources. Most existing wideband DOA estimation algorithms decompose the wideband signals into several narrowband frequency bins, followed by either focusing or transforming to a reference frequency bin, before estimating the DOAs. The focusing based methods are iterative and their performance is affected by the choice of preliminary DOA estimates and the number of source DOAs to be estimated. The existing method requiring transformation to a reference frequency bin exhibits spurious peaks in the spatial spectrum and is not …

Scaling Of Geochemical Reaction Rates Via Advective Solute Transport, Allen Hunt, B. Ghanbarian-Alavijeh, Thomas E. Skinner, R. P. Ewing Jan 2015

Scaling Of Geochemical Reaction Rates Via Advective Solute Transport, Allen Hunt, B. Ghanbarian-Alavijeh, Thomas E. Skinner, R. P. Ewing

Physics Faculty Publications

Transport in porous media is quite complex, and still yields occasional surprises. In geological porous media, the rate at which chemical reactions (e.g., weathering and dissolution) occur is found to diminish by orders of magnitude with increasing time or distance. The temporal rates of laboratory experiments and field observations differ, and extrapolating from laboratory experiments (in months) to field rates (in millions of years) can lead to order-of-magnitude errors. The reactions are transport-limited, but characterizing them using standard solute transport expressions can yield results in agreement with experiment only if spurious assumptions and parameters are introduced. We previously developed a …

Large Scale Laser Crystallization Of Solution-Based Alumina-Doped Zinc Oxide (Azo) Nanoinks For Highly Transparent Conductive Electrode, Qiong Nian, Michael J. Callahan, Mojib Saei, David C. Look, Harry Efstathiadis, John Bailey, Gary J. Cheng Jan 2015

Large Scale Laser Crystallization Of Solution-Based Alumina-Doped Zinc Oxide (Azo) Nanoinks For Highly Transparent Conductive Electrode, Qiong Nian, Michael J. Callahan, Mojib Saei, David C. Look, Harry Efstathiadis, John Bailey, Gary J. Cheng

Physics Faculty Publications

A new method combining aqueous solution printing with UV Laser crystallization (UVLC) and post annealing is developed to deposit highly transparent and conductive Aluminum doped Zinc Oxide (AZO) films. This technique is able to rapidly produce large area AZO films with better structural and optoelectronic properties than most high vacuum deposition, suggesting a potential large-scale manufacturing technique. The optoelectronic performance improvement attributes to UVLC and forming gas annealing (FMG) induced grain boundary density decrease and electron traps passivation at grain boundaries. The physical model and computational simulation developed in this work could be applied to thermal treatment of many other …

Investigation Of Plasmon Resonance Tunneling Through Subwavelength Hole Arrays In Highly Doped Conductive Zno Films, Nima Nader, Shivashankar Vangala, Joseph R. Hendrickson, Kevin D. Leedy, David C. Look, Junpeng Guo, Justin W. Cleary Jan 2015

Investigation Of Plasmon Resonance Tunneling Through Subwavelength Hole Arrays In Highly Doped Conductive Zno Films, Nima Nader, Shivashankar Vangala, Joseph R. Hendrickson, Kevin D. Leedy, David C. Look, Junpeng Guo, Justin W. Cleary

Physics Faculty Publications

Experimental results pertaining to plasmon resonance tunneling through a highly conductive zinc oxide (ZnO) layer with subwavelength hole-arrays is investigated in the mid-infrared regime. Gallium-doped ZnO layers are pulsed-laser deposited on a silicon wafer. The ZnO has metallic optical properties with a bulk plasma frequency of 214 THz, which is equivalent to a free space wavelength of 1.4 μm. Hole arrays with different periods and hole shapes are fabricated via a standard photolithography process. Resonant mode tunneling characteristics are experimentally studied for different incident angles and compared with surface plasmontheoretical calculations and finite-difference time-domain simulations. Transmission peaks, higher than the …

We report on seven years of attitudinal data using the Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey from University Modeling Instruction (UMI) sections of introductory physics at Florida International University. University Modeling Instruction is a curricular and pedagogical transformation of introductory university physics that engages students in building and testing conceptual models in an integrated lab and lecture learning environment. This work expands upon previous studies that reported consistently positive attitude shifts in UMI courses; here, we disaggregate the data by gender and ethnicity to look for any disparities in the pattern of favorable shifts. We find that women and students …

Model Of Deep Nonvolcanic Tremor Part Ii: Episodic Tremor And Slip, Naum I. Gershenzon Jan 2015

Model Of Deep Nonvolcanic Tremor Part Ii: Episodic Tremor And Slip, Naum I. Gershenzon

Physics Faculty Publications

Bursts of tremor accompany a moving slip pulse in Episodic Tremor and Slip (ETS) events. The sources of this non-volcanic tremor (NVT) are largely unknown. We have developed a model describing the mechanism of NTV generation. According to this model, NTV is a reflection of resonant-type oscillations excited in a fault at certain depth ranges. From a mathematical viewpoint, tremor (phonons) and slip pulses (solitons) are two different solutions of the sine-Gordon equation describing frictional processes inside a fault. In an ETS event, a moving slip pulse generates tremor due to interaction with structural heterogeneities in a fault and to …

Highly Transparent Conductive Electrode With Ultra-Low Haze By Grain Boundary Modification Of Aqueous Solution Fabricated Alumina-Doped Zinc Oxide Nanocrystals, Qiong Nian, Michael J. Callahan, David C. Look, Harry Efstathiadis, John Bailey, Gary J. Cheng Jan 2015

Highly Transparent Conductive Electrode With Ultra-Low Haze By Grain Boundary Modification Of Aqueous Solution Fabricated Alumina-Doped Zinc Oxide Nanocrystals, Qiong Nian, Michael J. Callahan, David C. Look, Harry Efstathiadis, John Bailey, Gary J. Cheng

Physics Faculty Publications

Commercial production of transparent conducting oxide (TCO) polycrystalline films requires high electrical conductivity with minimal degradation in optical transparency. Aqueous solution deposited TCO films would reduce production costs of TCO films but suffer from low electrical mobility, which severely degrades both electrical conductivity and optical transparency in the visible spectrum. Here, we demonstrated that grain boundary modification by ultra-violet laser crystallization (UVLC) of solution deposited aluminium-doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanocrystals results in high Hall mobility, with a corresponding dramatic improvement in AZO electrical conductance. The AZO films after laser irradiation exhibit electrical mobility up to 18.1 cm2 V−1 …

Given the ambident reactivity of oxindoles in terms of N- versus C-alkylation, realization of the three points of diversity available to (presumably benzenoid substituted) benzylidene oxindoles is normally achieved via a sequence involving initial N-alkylation of the corresponding isatin precursor, reductive deoxygenation to the N-alkylated oxindole, and finally aldol condensation to the desired target. Since benzenoid substituted isatins are generally more readily available than the corresponding oxindoles, an alternate but much less examined manifold involves reduction of the isatin to an oxindole, aldolization at the C-3 position followed by N-alkylation of the resultant benzylidene oxindole. Since benzylidene oxindoles have potential …

Organophosphates (OPs) are highly toxic insecticides and nerve agents that have been designed to inhibit the hydrolysis of acetylcholine by binding to the serine active site of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). They are one of the most common causes of human poisoning worldwide and are frequently intentionally used in suicides in agricultural areas. For this reason, there is a need for therapeutics to rescue those from intoxication. Obvious ethical concerns prevent humans from being subjected to OP exposure for therapeutic efficacy and safety testing. Therefore, animal surrogates for humans must be appropriately selected. A new paradigm, described herein, incorporating both in silico …

Expression Of The Nkcc2a Cotransporter In Mouse Central Nervous System, Katherine E. Fahy, James B. Lucot, Hayo Castrop, Mauricio Di Fulvio

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Na-K-2Cl cotransporter 2A (NKCC2A), also known as the bumetanide-sensitive cotransporter 1 (BSC1), transports Na+, K+ and Cl- with a stoichiometry of 1:1:2. NKCC2A is considered a kidney specific cotransporter. It is abundantly expressed in apical membrane of the tubular cells in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TALH) and in the macula densa. However, NKCC2 has also been found at low levels in different cells, including insulin-secreting ones. This secondary active transporter uses the energy stored in the electrochemical gradients of Na and K maintained by the Na/K-ATPase located on the basolateral membrane of the TALH. The …

In July 2013, an industry-scale seismic reflection survey was conducted at a site in northern Jay County, Indiana, by geophysics students and faculty of Wright State University. As a part of that effort, a separate near-surface seismic dataset was collected to examine the Vp, Vs, and Poisson's Ratio of the glacial drift and upper bedrock. This near-surface study successfully used a common dataset that was separately analyzed for both Vp (seismic refraction) and Vs (MASW) to calculate the Poisson's Ratio of the glacial drift and underlying bedrock. The driller's log for a water well near the east end of this …

An experiment was conducted to constrain the HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) or H/V spectral ratio method at a glaciated site in northeast Ohio. Multiple methods were used to determine the shear wave velocity (Vs) and depth (h) to bedrock in relation to the fundamental resonant frequency (fo) determined from 3-component seismic data, as defined by the relationship f0=Vs/4h. The shear wave velocity structure was determined at three sites using MASW (Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves) and shear wave refraction methods, and the fundamental resonant frequency was passively observed using 3-component Guralp broadband seismometers. The …
