The Effects Of Bright Light Intervention On Flight Crew Behavioral Alertness And Cognitive Fatigue, Lori Brown, Geoffrey Whitehurst

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

The study aimed to investigate the efficacy of bright light intervention to improve behavioral alertness and reduce cognitive fatigue in flight crew-members. During the four week study, crewmembers wore actigraph bands to monitor sleep behaviors. Self-assessed levels of sleepiness were recorded using the Karlosinska Sleepinees Scale (KSS), and self-assessed fatigue was measured using the Samn-Perelli (SP) fatigue scale. Participants completed psychomotor vigilance tests (PVT) to measure behavioral alertness. On the third and fourth weeks of the study, participants were exposed to short wavelength bright light (465nm blue) light intervention. The results show that there was a significant difference in alertness …

Proxy-Pet Building Blocks As A Design Element For Library Synthesis, Lainey Jo Mallin Jan 2015

Proxy-Pet Building Blocks As A Design Element For Library Synthesis, Lainey Jo Mallin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In exploring radioligands for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, it is not unusual to synthesize a library of compounds around some targeting scaffold, screen for optimal binding to a relevant diagnostic cellular target, remove some portion of optimized molecule so as to append the requisite reporter group, and then re-evaluate. To this end, the use of "click labeling" in radiochemistry is proving an increasingly attractive means of conjugating a 18F-reporter group, wherein the targeting scaffold bearing a terminal alkyne is allowed to react with a 2-[18F]-fluoroethylazide to forge a linkage as a 1,2,3-triazole substituent. Since the triazole linked prosthetic group …

Reasonable Reasoner: The Influence Of Intervention Strategy, System Parameters And Their Representation On Causal Understanding, Beth Cristina Bullemer Jan 2015

Reasonable Reasoner: The Influence Of Intervention Strategy, System Parameters And Their Representation On Causal Understanding, Beth Cristina Bullemer

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The following study assessed how contingency and delay influence people's reasoning strategy and outcomes after interacting with a representation of a discrete and continuous system environment, in the context of controlling hypertension. The related causal reasoning and system dynamics research adopt different measurement paradigms and employ different system dynamics, making it difficult to resolve the empirical findings. Specifically, the causal reasoning literature has traditionally considered systems in which previous inputs do not influence future outcomes (e.g., a discrete system condition) while the system dynamics literature removes this constraint (e.g., a continuous system condition). Also, the system dynamics literature has focused …

Saccade Detection Using Polar Coordinates – A New Algorithm, Matt Middendorf, Christina Gruenwald, Lucas Stork, Samantha Hoepf, Scott Galster Jan 2015

Saccade Detection Using Polar Coordinates – A New Algorithm, Matt Middendorf, Christina Gruenwald, Lucas Stork, Samantha Hoepf, Scott Galster

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

Over the past few decades substantial research has been conducted regarding saccades (rapid eye movements). There are two components of this research. First there is the detection of the saccades, and second how to interpret the saccades features (amplitude, length, and velocity) to inform specific areas of research. This involves both experimental research and clinical applications. The detection of saccades is typically accomplished using two approaches, including cameras and the electrooculogram (EOG). Both of these approaches require algorithms to process the raw data, detect saccades, and calculate the saccade features. The current effort focuses on detecting saccades in the EOG …

Cometabolic Biodegradation Of Halogenated Aliphatic Hydrocarbons By Ammonia-Oxidizing Microorganisms Naturally Associated With Wetland Plant Roots, Ke Qin

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Bench-scale microcosms with wetland plant roots were investigated to characterize the microbial contributions to contaminant degradation of halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbons (HAHs) with ammonium. The batch system microcosms consisted of a known mass of wetland plant roots in aerobic growth media where the roots provided both an inoculum of root-associated ammonium-oxidizing microorganisms and a microbial habitat. Aqueous growth media, ammonium, and HAHs including trichloroethene (TCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE), chloroform (CF), 1,1,2-trichloroethane (1,1,2-TCA), ethylene dibromide (EDB, or 1,2-dibromoethane, 1,2-DBA) and 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) were replaced weekly in batch microcosms while retaining roots and root-associated biomass.

Molecular biology results indicated that ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were …

Direct Optimization For Classification With Boosting, Shaodan Zhai Jan 2015

Direct Optimization For Classification With Boosting, Shaodan Zhai

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Boosting, as one of the state-of-the-art classification approaches, is widely used in the industry for a broad range of problems. The existing boosting methods often formulate classification tasks as a convex optimization problem by using surrogates of performance measures. While the convex surrogates are computationally efficient to globally optimize, they are sensitive to outliers and inconsistent under some conditions. On the other hand, boosting's success can be ascribed to maximizing the margins, but few boosting approaches are designed to directly maximize the margin. In this research, we design novel boosting algorithms that directly optimize non-convex performance measures, including the empirical …

Contrast Pattern Aided Regression And Classification, Vahid Taslimitehrani Jan 2015

Contrast Pattern Aided Regression And Classification, Vahid Taslimitehrani

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Regression and classification techniques play an essential role in many data mining tasks and have broad applications. However, most of the state-of-the-art regression and classification techniques are often unable to adequately model the interactions among predictor variables in highly heterogeneous datasets. New techniques that can effectively model such complex and heterogeneous structures are needed to significantly improve prediction accuracy. In this dissertation, we propose a novel type of accurate and interpretable regression and classification models, named as Pattern Aided Regression (PXR) and Pattern Aided Classification (PXC) respectively. Both PXR and PXC rely on identifying regions in the data space where …

Efficient Training Of Small Kernel Convolutional Neural Networks Using Fast Fourier Transform, Tyler Highlander Jan 2015

Efficient Training Of Small Kernel Convolutional Neural Networks Using Fast Fourier Transform, Tyler Highlander

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are currently state-of-the-art for various classification tasks, but are computationally expensive. Propagating through the convolutional layers is very slow, as each kernel in each layer must sequentially calculate many inner products for a single forward and backward propagation which equates to O(N^2 n^2) per kernel per layer where the inputs are N x N arrays and the kernels are n x n arrays. Convolution can be efficiently performed as a Hadamard product in the frequency domain. The bottleneck is the transformation which has a cost of O(N^2 log_2 N) using the fast Fourier transform (FFT). However, …

The purpose of this paper is to determine if any of the four commonly used dimensionality reduction techniques are reliable at extracting the same features that humans perceive as distinguishable features. The four dimensionality reduction techniques that were used in this experiment were Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS), Isomap and Kernel Principal Component Analysis (KPCA). These four techniques were applied to a dataset of images that consist of five infrared military vehicles. Out of the four techniques three out of the five resulting dimensions of PCA matched a human feature. One out of five dimensions of MDS matched …

Flight Deck Interval Management Avionics: Eye-Tracking Analysis, Kara Latorella, John W. Harden Jan 2015

Flight Deck Interval Management Avionics: Eye-Tracking Analysis, Kara Latorella, John W. Harden

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

Interval Management (IM) is one NexGen method for achieving airspace efficiencies. In order to initiate IM procedures, Air Traffic Control provides an IM clearance to the IM aircraft’s pilots that indicates an intended spacing from another aircraft (the target to follow – or TTF) and the point at which this should be achieved. Pilots enter the clearance in the flight deck IM (FIM) system; and once the TTF’s Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast signal is available, the FIM algorithm generates target speeds to meet that IM goal. This study examined four Avionics Conditions (defined by the instrumentation and location presenting FIM information) …

A Workload Balanced Mapreduce Framework On Gpu Platforms, Yue Zhang

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The MapReduce framework is a programming model proposed by Google to process large datasets. It is an efficient framework that can be used in many areas, such as social network, scientific research, electronic business, etc. Hence, more and more MapReduce frameworks are implemented on different platforms, including Phoenix (based on multicore CPU), MapCG (based on GPU), and StreamMR (based on GPU). However, these MapReduce frameworks have limitations, and they cannot handle the collision problem in the map phase, and the unbalanced workload problems in the reduce phase. To improve the performance of the MapReduce framework on GPGPUs, in this thesis, …

Requirements For Developing The Model Of Spatial Orientation Into An Applied Cockpit Warning System, Ben D. Lawson, Braden J. Mcgrath, Michael C. Newman, Angus H. Rupert Jan 2015

Requirements For Developing The Model Of Spatial Orientation Into An Applied Cockpit Warning System, Ben D. Lawson, Braden J. Mcgrath, Michael C. Newman, Angus H. Rupert

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

Refinements have been made to a model of spatial disorientation (SD) to improve simulation of acceleration stimuli and visual-vestibular interactions. The improved model has been applied to aviation mishaps. The model is considered a technological countermeasure for SD because it is implemented as prototype software to aid the identification of mishap contributors in a way that should benefit didactic training. There is a more direct way this countermeasure can prevent SD, which is by adapting it for use as part of a cockpit warning system. The idea is to expand the model from one which explains mishaps post-hoc into one …

Identifying Mental Models Of Search In A Simulated Flight Task Using A Pathmapping Approach, Brandon S. Perelman, Shane T. Mueller Jan 2015

Identifying Mental Models Of Search In A Simulated Flight Task Using A Pathmapping Approach, Brandon S. Perelman, Shane T. Mueller

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2015

Aerial assets are often used for missions such as intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance. The pilot’s search decisions reflect a mental model for the search space, including characteristics such as target prioritization, distance-reward evaluations, and path optimization cri-teria. To investigate differences in these mental models, we examined 23 participants’ paths flown in a synthetic task environment in which they piloted a simulated aircraft to search for targets rep-resenting missing persons. Determining similarity among flight paths is a challenge. To accom-plish this, we used a new tool (Pathmapping, a package in the R statistical computing language; Mueller, Perelman, & Veinott, …
