Culture Connects 20/20: A Cultural Plan For The Dayton, Ohio Region, Marc Goldring, Richard Stock, Jane Dockery

Community Development

In March of 2014, Culture Works contracted WolfBrown to provide the services of Marc Goldring, Associate Principal, to oversee aspects of developing a 10-year cultural plan for the Dayton Region. The planning team also included Dr. Richard Stock, Director, Business Research Group of the University of Dayton and Jane Dockery, APRI's Associate Director. This project grew out of earlier regional research, beginning in 2011, funded in part by the Dayton Foundation that included comprehensive market research about cultural attendance and a study of economic activity generated by the nonprofit cultural sector.

Where the practices of creativity help our young people …

Dyslexia And Configural Perception Of Character Sequences, Joseph W. Houpt, Bethany L. Sussman, James T. Townsend, Sharlene D. Newman Apr 2015

Dyslexia And Configural Perception Of Character Sequences, Joseph W. Houpt, Bethany L. Sussman, James T. Townsend, Sharlene D. Newman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Developmental dyslexia is a complex and heterogeneous disorder characterized by unexpected difficulty in learning to read. Although it is considered to be biologically based, the degree of variation has made the nature and locus of dyslexia difficult to ascertain. Hypotheses regarding the cause have ranged from low-level perceptual deficits to higher order cognitive deficits, such as phonological processing and visual-spatial attention. We applied the capacity coefficient, a measure obtained from a mathematical cognitive model of response times to measure how efficiently participants processed different classes of stimuli. The capacity coefficient was used to test the extent to which individuals with …

How Does Dissipation Affect The Transition From Static To Dynamic Macroscopic Friction?, Naum I. Gershenzon, Gust Bambakidis, Thomas E. Skinner Apr 2015

How Does Dissipation Affect The Transition From Static To Dynamic Macroscopic Friction?, Naum I. Gershenzon, Gust Bambakidis, Thomas E. Skinner

Physics Faculty Publications

Description of the transitional process from a static to a dynamic frictional regime is a fundamental problem of modern physics. Previously, we developed a model based on the well-known Frenkel-Kontorova model to describe dry macroscopic friction. Here, this model has been modified to include the effect of dissipation in derived relations between the kinematic and dynamic parameters of a transition process. The main (somewhat counterintuitive) result is a demonstration that the rupture (i.e., detachment front) velocity of the slip pulse which arises during the transition does not depend on friction. The only parameter (besides the elastic and plastic …

Where Do We Develop? Discovering Regions For Urban Investment In Senegal, Derek Doran, Andrew Fox, Veena Mendiratta Apr 2015

Where Do We Develop? Discovering Regions For Urban Investment In Senegal, Derek Doran, Andrew Fox, Veena Mendiratta

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The rate of urbanization in developing countries, defined as the speed with which a population shifts from rural to urban areas, is among the highest in the world. The disproportionate number of citizens that live in a small numbers of cities places incredible pressure on the largest cities in these countries, which may already be faced with limited resources, weak industrialization, and underdeveloped infrastructures. Urban planning researchers as well as policy makers have suggested that governments in developing countries make capital investments within and surrounding smaller cities to attract citizens away from large urban centers, thereby lowering the pressure placed …

No Oasis In The Desert: Identification And Implications Of The Food Desert Around An Urban Ohio Hospital, R. J. Sontag

Celebration of Undergraduate & Graduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials

Montgomery County, Ohio’s diabetes prevalence outpaces the nation, and the incidence of adult obesity approaches 1/3. Access to healthy food in the impoverished neighborhood surrounding Dayton’s Good Samaritan Hospital, the site of the Family Medicine residency, is important when educating about health lifestyle. The purpose of this project was to determine whether the area was a food desert and to evaluate the implications of the label.

Context-Driven Automatic Subgraph Creation For Literature-Based Discovery, Delroy H. Cameron, Ramakanth Kavuluru, Thomas Rindflesch, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Olivier Bodenreider

Kno.e.sis Publications

Background: Literature-based discovery (LBD) is characterized by uncovering hidden associations in non-interacting scientific literature. Prior approaches to LBD include use of: 1) domain expertise and structured background knowledge to manually filter and explore the literature, 2) distributional statistics and graph-theoretic measures to rank interesting connections and 3) heuristics to help eliminate spurious connections. However, manual approaches to LBD are not scalable and purely distributional approaches may not be sufficient to obtain insights into the meaning of poorly understood associations. While several graph-based approaches have the potential to elucidate associations, their effectiveness has not been fully demonstrated. A considerable degree of …

Compensatory Enlargement Of Ossabaw Miniature Swine Coronary Arteries In Diffuse Atherosclerosis, Jenny Susana Choy, Tong Luo, Yunlong Huo, Thomas Wischgoll, Kyle Schultz, Shawn D. Teague, Michael Sturek, Ghassan S. Kassab

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

Studies in human and non-human primates have confirmed the compensatory enlargement or positive remodeling (Glagov phenomenon) of coronary vessels in the presence of focal stenosis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to document arterial enlargement in a metabolic syndrome animal model with diffuse coronary artery disease (DCAD) in the absence of severe focal stenosis. Two different groups of Ossabaw miniature pigs were fed a high fat atherogenic diet for 4 months (Group I) and 12 months (Group II), respectively. Group I (6 pigs) underwent contrast enhanced computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) at baseline and after …

On Using Synthetic Social Media Stimuli In An Emergency Preparedness Functional Exercise, Andrew Hampton, Shreyansh Bhatt, Gary Alan Smith, Jeremy S. Brunn, Hemant Purohit, Valerie L. Shalin, John M. Flach, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

This paper details the creation and use of a massive (over 32,000 messages) artificially constructed 'Twitter' microblog stream for a regional emergency preparedness functional exercise. By combining microblog conversion, manual production, and a control set, we created a web based information stream providing valid, misleading, and irrelevant information to public information officers (PIOs) representing hospitals, fire departments, the local Red Cross, and city and county government officials. PIOs searched, monitored, and (through conventional channels) verified potentially actionable information that could then be redistributed through a personalized screen name. Our case study of a key PIO reveals several capabilities that social …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation Of Intracranial Aneurysms - Comparing Size And Shape, Zifeng Yang, Hongtao Yu, George P. Huang, Ryan Schwieterman, Bryan Ludwig Feb 2015

Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation Of Intracranial Aneurysms - Comparing Size And Shape, Zifeng Yang, Hongtao Yu, George P. Huang, Ryan Schwieterman, Bryan Ludwig

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Objective: To study the hemodynamics of an anatomic internal carotid artery aneurysm derived from a patient-specific model and then manipulate into two phantom morphologies: one growing uniformly by size and the other changing shape unevenly. Methods: The computational model of the saccular, internal carotid artery, aneurysm was constructed from 3D rotational, digitally subtracted, catheter angiography images. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed under pulsatile cardiac flow conditions. Velocity vectors, streamlines, pressure, and wall shear stress (WSS) and its variance distributions were quantitatively visualized. Results: The maximum pressure and WSS from the time-averaged distribution on the inside saccular surface of the …

Understanding The Impact Of Open-Framework Conglomerates On Water-Oil Displacements: Victor Interval Of The Ivishak Reservoir, Prudhoe Bay Field, Alaska, Naum I. Gershenzon, Mohamadreza Soltanian, Robert W. Ritzi, David F. Dominic Feb 2015

Understanding The Impact Of Open-Framework Conglomerates On Water-Oil Displacements: Victor Interval Of The Ivishak Reservoir, Prudhoe Bay Field, Alaska, Naum I. Gershenzon, Mohamadreza Soltanian, Robert W. Ritzi, David F. Dominic

Physics Faculty Publications

The Victor Unit of the Ivishak Formation in the Prudhoe Bay Oilfield is characterized by high net-to-gross fluvial sandstones and conglomerates. The highest permeability is found within sets of cross-strata of open-framework conglomerate (OFC). These cross-strata are preserved within unit-bar deposits and assemblages of unit-bar deposits within compound (braid)-bar deposits, and may form thief zones limiting enhanced oil recovery. We incorporate recent research that has quantified important attributes of preserved sedimentary architecture into high-resolution models. Waterflooding experiments using these models demonstrate the control that such architecture has on oil production rate, water breakthrough time, and spatial and temporal distribution of …
