Some Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Growing Up Black, Joan S. Wallace, Samuel P. Wong
Some Socio-Cultural Aspects Of Growing Up Black, Joan S. Wallace, Samuel P. Wong
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
Black people, like other people, grow up in families. This simple observation is a suprise to people who are accustomed to associate the experiences of Black people with slavery, crime, delinquency, civil disorders. The Black historian, Benjamin Quarles (1967) has observed that white America tends to have a distorted perspective on Black life, and the fact of Blacks growing up in a family is a fresh approach to the understanding of socio-cultural aspects of growing up Black (cf. Billingsley, 1968).
The family is society's primary context for meeting a child's biological needs, directing his development …
Racial Identification Versus Professional Identification: Can They Be Reconciled, Patricia A. Brown
Racial Identification Versus Professional Identification: Can They Be Reconciled, Patricia A. Brown
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
For close to a decade, members of the social work profession, who also were members of a minority race, have been confronting the profession with their perception that social work has not addressed adequately the needs of their racial groups. The fact that members of one group (a minority race) confronted another group (the social work profession) in which they also held membership signaled the strong and serious conflict between a person's identification with two major groups. Whether the two group identifications could find a common ground, became a concern for not only the individual belonging to the two groups, …
Some Implications Of Ethnic Disparity In Education For Social Work, Faustine C. Jones, Samuel P. Wong
Some Implications Of Ethnic Disparity In Education For Social Work, Faustine C. Jones, Samuel P. Wong
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from full-text article:
The increasing attention to the institutional nature of social problems is a significant emphasis in social work. Many of the personal troubles of individual clients are the products of a social system which operates to keep them in trouble, and an awareness of the institutional nature of social problems is a prerequisite for effective solution of personal troubles (cf. C. Wright Mills, 1959).

The Ethnic And Class Dimensions In Neighborhood: A Means For The Reorganization Of Human Service Delivery Systems, Arthur J. Naparstek, Karen Kollias
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
Human service delivery systems get criticized by both "users" and "providers" of the services, regardless of countless reforms, evaluations, models, decentralization efforts and re-evaluations. In order to determine directions for the future, this article will discuss past policy initiatives, and review the literature which links human service needs to ethnicity and social class in a neighborhood context.

A Study Of Hydrotropic Pulping, Tat-Hong Poon
A Study Of Hydrotropic Pulping, Tat-Hong Poon
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Aspen wood chips and hardwood thermomechanical pulp were cooked with Sodium Xylen Sulfonate solution in various cooking temperature, time length, chemical content and liquor to wood radio.
The process had a very high yield but the products produced a poor strength. Brightness was increased slightly by the treatment. Kappa Number was decreased at the beginning of the cook but increased again as the cook proceeded.
Based on this experimental data, hydrotropic pulp produced from wood chips and thermomechanical pulp was inferior to ordinary chemical pulp (Kraft or Sulfate) both in terms of physical and optical characteristics.

The Effects Of Fiber Furnish On Physical Properties Of Paper, Dennis Havard
The Effects Of Fiber Furnish On Physical Properties Of Paper, Dennis Havard
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
This experiment was designed to determine the effects of fiber furnish on the physical properties of paper. To do this various pulps and combinations of these pulps were formed into handsheets and their physical properties determined. The tests performed on the handsheets were tear, fold, tensile, stretch and tensile energy absorption.
The findings of this report indicates possibilities of a linear relationship between percent of pulp in a sheet and the fold and tensile. Stretch values increase by various degrees as more of the higher stretch fiber is added. The TEA follows the stretch values very closely.

The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary
The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A feasibility study of fluidized bed high rate - biological waste treatment was performed. Goals of the , investigation were to demonstrate possible advantages of higher treatment rates and compaction of effective reactor volume, and to compare this, system to conventional high rate treatment, in particular, activated sludge.
This system was found to be capable of achieving high rates of Boo 5 removal, producing a, consistent low concentration effluent. Such treatment could be realized in one-fifth the reactor volume required for conventional activated sludge, operating at an equivalent organic loading rate. Less sludge wasting occurred in this system operation than …

The S.S. Reading: Does It Float?, John C. Towner, Howard M. Evans
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Increasing numbers of both elementary and secondary teachers have implemented Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) as a part of their program in reading instruction. Much of this implementation has occurred and will continue primarily on the recommendation of its proponents. There has been no serious examination of the assumptions by these proponents of its effectiveness in bringing about the benefits claimed for it. The tremendous importance attached to learning to read and the limited time available in which to provide instructional activities toward that end should lead us to a rigorous evaluation of SSR whenever and wherever it becomes a component …
The Application Of Linear Programming In The Design Of Least Cost Furnishes For Paper Making Systems, George M. Iverson
The Application Of Linear Programming In The Design Of Least Cost Furnishes For Paper Making Systems, George M. Iverson
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Linear programming is a mathematical technique used to optimize complex physical processes. Due to rising pulp costs, the need to minimize the costs of raw materials in paper furnishes is acute. This paper studies the potential of linear programming as a tool to design furnishes meeting designated paper specifications while minimizing raw material costs. The flexibility of linear programming is discussed and the applicability of linear models describing multi-component furnishes with their effect on paper properties is investigated. Some paper properties were found to fit well with the linear model. Some of these were opacity, smoothness, tensile, mullen, and tear. …
Teacher Education In The Field Of Reading, David B. Doake
Teacher Education In The Field Of Reading, David B. Doake
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
For too long a pervasive idea in the field of teacher education has been that primary teachers only, and more especiaHy those primary teachers who are concerned with the education of the very young, have the sole responsibility for teaching the students who are moving through our educational institutions how to read. The beginning and the end of the process of learning to read effectively have been left almost entirely in the hands of the primary teacher, who, up until recently, has experienced only minimal courses in the field of reading as part of his pre-service training. One of the …
The Resurrection Of Comprehension Questions, Gloria T. Mann
The Resurrection Of Comprehension Questions, Gloria T. Mann
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
There is a growing concern by the public that schools are not preparing their students to think critically. This is exemplified by the numerous articles appearing in newspapers and in magazines. It appears to be the contention of many parents that the primary goal of learning is the retention of factual information.
