Community Assessment Scales: The State Of The Art, John F. Else, Samuel E. Walker
Community Assessment Scales: The State Of The Art, John F. Else, Samuel E. Walker
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Community development activities are founded on the assumption that citizens have some concept of a "good community" toward which they want to move. Attention needs to be given to how community developers can determine citizen values and attitudes about the type of community that they want. Community assessment scales (CAS's) have been used as one means of measuring community attitudes and desires.
This paper explores the state of the art of the development and use of CAS's. The conclusions are that there has been only minimal use of CAS's and that there are many conceptual and methodological problems with the …

Maintaining Goals In A Mutual-Benefit Association, James R. Hudson
Maintaining Goals In A Mutual-Benefit Association, James R. Hudson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Mutual benefit associations have been frequently found to confront two major problems: membership apathy and oligarchical control. The organization presented in this paper solved those two problems in unique ways. First professionals employed by the organization were kept in subordinant roles when key policy decisions were made by the lay board. Secondly, the organizational structure did not match the reward structure, i.e., salaries of supervisors were often lower than those of the professional staff. Finally, the organization operated on the principle that each of its programs should be taken over by other organizations and were successful frequently enough with this …
Living And Acting In An Altered Body: A Phenomenological Description Of Amputation, Mary Jo Deegan
Living And Acting In An Altered Body: A Phenomenological Description Of Amputation, Mary Jo Deegan
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Adults with recent amputations are often perceived as suffering from post-operative depression and phantom limbs. These states are frequently seen as failures in "adjustment" since there are often few physiological involvements which curtail daily functioning. This perspective is seen as compatible with major American values of pragmatism, individualism, and a mechanistic medical model. We suggest here that problems in daily living and the phantom limb are not "mental" aberrations but rather reflections of a radically altered lived experience. The performance of the actor is significantly changed and can be discussed as a function of changed experience, and style. This persppctivedraws …
The Labeler As An Influence On Labeling Outcomes, Wallace J. Gingerich
The Labeler As An Influence On Labeling Outcomes, Wallace J. Gingerich
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Focusing upon labeling processes at the level of interpersonal relations, this paper points out the general inattention to the labeler as an influence on labeling outcomes. In addition, recent empirical findings suggest not only that labeler variables may be associated with outcomes, but that different labelers are influenced in different ways by different factors in their interpersonal labeling. Consequently, an effort is made to incorporate knowledge from social perception theory into the labeling perspective in order to enhance our understanding of interpersonal labeling processes. Several labeler related variables which might be expected to influence labeling outcomes are suggested.
The Worker/Client Relationship: Relevant Role Theory, Carlton E. Munson, Pallassana Balgopal
The Worker/Client Relationship: Relevant Role Theory, Carlton E. Munson, Pallassana Balgopal
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The historic concept of "friendly visitor" has blurred the distinction of professional and personal in worker/client relationships. Current social trends and social problems as well as recent theory applications in practice have made these distinctions harder to identify and maintain. Role theory can be used to analyze behavioral indicators of objective and subjective components of relationship.

High School Discipline Problems And Reading Disability, George M. Usova
High School Discipline Problems And Reading Disability, George M. Usova
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In the past ten years vandalism, impertinence to teachers and general classroom disturbances have increased tremendously. These are only a few of the types of discipline problems that teachers and administrators are faced with daily. The secondary schools seem to be the most prominent area of trouble. If at all possible, it is up to these high school classroom teachers to handle the discipline problems they face. Sending students to the office, suspensions, and expulsions are often not the answer for chronic offenders. They simply meet these punishments with resentment and defiance. Too many times they just return to the …

A Survey Of The Use Of Reading Readiness Tests, Marie Carducci-Bolchazy
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Reading readiness tests generally are intended to serve two purposes: (1) prediction of readiness for reading instruction and, to a degree, (2) diagnosis of deficiencies of specific skills that are prerequisites for reading. How successful are these tests in serving their purposes?

Expanding The Reading Interests Of Secondary Students, Donald C. Cushenbery
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
All students encounter various required reading assignments during the course of a school day in the different content areas. The adolescent's attention is also directed to hundreds of other pieces of reading matter which may not be recommended or suggested by teachers or parents. Some students at both the high school and university levels contend that they have no available time for engaging in wide reading since required reading and school activities consume most of their study and leisure-time hours.

Some Implications For Learning Centers, Mark E. Thompson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
It should be quite clear from the research evidence that successful students tend to plan their work carefully, think ahead, are conscientious, independent, self-confident and recognize the importance of finding suitable conditions for effective study (Entwistle and Entwistle, 1970). Being able to organize, having a good self-image and being flexible are most important traits for students to have. For students that are handicapped in various ways, there is hope. Students can learn academic skills, if they have a good teacher and work to help themselves.

How Disabled Readers Try To Remember Words, Catherine Morsink, Donald P. Cross, Jane Strickler
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Studies of memory tasks with normal learners, involving letters and word-like patterns, indicate that recall is easier when stimuli present familiar patterns, either as pronounceable syllables (Gibson, 1965) or as contextual dependencies (Miller & Selfridge, 1950). Blumberg (1968), studying associative learning tasks, found brain injured children to have the least difficulty in making associations between visual non-word like stimuli and spoken words, while having greatest difficulty with visual word-like associations. Bakker (1967) reports that severely disabled readers were significantly poorer than better readers in the recall of meaningful, but not meaningless, sequences.

The Role Of Need Assessment In The Community Mental Health System, William K. Redmon
The Role Of Need Assessment In The Community Mental Health System, William K. Redmon
Masters Theses
Introduction
The general purpose of the present paper is to analyze community mental health services in Michigan with respect to the responsiveness of the system to the target community. In order to accomplish this goal, several variables must be considered.
First, historical precedents of the current mental health system will be examined to determine the responsibilities of the system to the citizenry. Both legislative mandates and informal recommendations will be reviewed. Second, the methodologies available for community need assessment and citizen-system communication will be summarized in terms of their utility for increasing citizen control of service planning. Third, an actual …
