The Listening Journal: An Instructional Strategy For A Listening Awareness Program, Andrew D. Wolvin Jan 1977

The Listening Journal: An Instructional Strategy For A Listening Awareness Program, Andrew D. Wolvin

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The need for training in listening is a problem which has baffled educators for years. Studies demonstrate the tremendous amount of time that we spend in listening within our communication time. Paul T. Rankin's classic study gave us some working percentages, percentages which have held up in other, more recent, research projects. Through his analysis, Rankin discovered that we spend 75% of our time in oral communication. Of that time, approximately 45% is spent in listening and 30% of our time in speaking.

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Increasingly, universities have confronted a changing population of undergraduate students. They find themselves under considerable scrutiny, from legislators, taxpayers and potential students. Concurrently, the impetus to re-appraise the mission of undergraduate education, so as to insure its accommodation in our changing society, is in need of refocusing. The issue of who comes to the university, and for what end, stands foresquare in the face of faculties, administrators and elected guardians of higher education, now more than ever before. Again we are charged with providing curricula and format that are relevant enough to retain the attention of today's new student, that …

Opinion Writing For Publication, Richard P. Bailey Jan 1977

Opinion Writing For Publication, Richard P. Bailey

Perspectives (1969-1979)

So, when the "writing crisis" hit the pedagogical fan, I was ready with an "innovative" method (so dear to the hearts of educators) for teaching writing. What had lurked in my mind for years pushed its way from subconscious to conscious - i.e ., the only completely satisfying reward for good writing is publication. Students who are given a better reason for writing than the bored approval of a graduate student and/or an arbitrary grade by a young instructor marking papers and time until a section of English Lit. 5,000 opens - students with appetites whetted by the dream of …

Introduction: Warfare-Welfare As A Serious Social Problem For Study And Action, L. K. Northwood Jan 1977

Introduction: Warfare-Welfare As A Serious Social Problem For Study And Action, L. K. Northwood

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Throughout the Journal reference will be made to "The Warfare/Welfare State." When the term is used by the editors it refers to activities and programs in the public (governmental) sector having to do with the growth, development, and interrelationship of two of the major institutional complexes of society, the military and the social welfare.

A Moment Of Truth In The Warfare-Welfare Debate: The Transfer Amendment, Elizabeth Holtzman Jan 1977

A Moment Of Truth In The Warfare-Welfare Debate: The Transfer Amendment, Elizabeth Holtzman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The controversy over the budget is much more than a debate about how much should be spent in 1977 on the military, or social programs. It is more than a struggle between two branches of the federal government--the legislative and the executive-- over which body should determine the national priorities. Ultimately questions are raised about the viability of the democratic planning process in the warfare/welfare state, and how the people--the governed--can be adequately represented in the process. All of these issues are touched on explicitly or implicitly by Congresswoman Holtzman in the debate (although, to be sure, she was most …

The Political Economy Of Social Welfare: A Perspective, Christopher Rhoades Dykema Jan 1977

The Political Economy Of Social Welfare: A Perspective, Christopher Rhoades Dykema

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The social services are in trouble. After decades of expansion, we face retrenchment, fiscal pressures that threaten vital services, and unemployment among social service workers. The human services' traditional political champions offer only a timid and unconvinced resistance to the assaults from reactionary quarters.

Economic Conversion, Productive Efficiency And Social Welfare, Lloyd J. Dumas Jan 1977

Economic Conversion, Productive Efficiency And Social Welfare, Lloyd J. Dumas

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Traditional economic theory holds that there is a tradeoff between inflation and unemployment, and that accordingly price stability (i.e. 0% inflation) can only be achieved at the expense of increased unemployment, while full employment (corresponding to an unemployment rate of about 3%)' requires acceptance of an ongoing inflation. In 1960, the noted economists Paul Samuelson and Robert Solow published an analysis of annual data for the per d 1933-1958, from which they quantitatively estimated this tradeoff. It was their rough estimate that the elimination of inflation would require acceptance of a 5%-6% rate of unemployment while the achievement of full …

Maximizing The Impact Of An Alternative Agency, Miriam Galper, Carolyn Kott Washburne Nov 1976

Maximizing The Impact Of An Alternative Agency, Miriam Galper, Carolyn Kott Washburne

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

In the late 1960's and early 1970's the energy for change generated by the civil rights, black power and women's movements strongly affected many professionals working in social welfare agencies. Individually or with others in agencies, caucuses and unions, these radical professionals began to question the services provided by their agencies, the social and political functions of those agencies, and the part they played in their agencies. They began to critique the social welfare system in the United States and to develop some perspectives on what social services could be like if the country were truly committed to improving human …

The Incremental Trail In Developing False Doctrine And Its Consequences In The American Drug Scene, Avron Heiligman Sep 1976

The Incremental Trail In Developing False Doctrine And Its Consequences In The American Drug Scene, Avron Heiligman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The trail of what has turned out to be the criminalization of drug taking behavior illustrates a major criticism of incrementalism in developing policy-- the acceptance and maintenance of specific values and attitudes. The effects of false doctrine accepted more than fifty years ago are with us today and will continue in their effect umtil a radical change is seen in our society. The purpose of this paper is to map the old trail, identify those times where false doctrine was accepted, and to present a radical alternative for the future.

Community Planning Organizations Coping With Their Problems: The Case Of The Welfare Council, Fred M. Cox, John E. Tropman May 1976

Community Planning Organizations Coping With Their Problems: The Case Of The Welfare Council, Fred M. Cox, John E. Tropman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Community welfare councils, sharply attacked in the 1960's, have survived, while many of their competitors have lost ground. Understanding their survival may help community planning agencies and planners. This study combines data from a survey of community welfare councils with data from a longitudinal study of a single council. The basic problem of councils is conceptualized as value precariousness, following Clark and Selznick, and data are provided that tend to confirm the existence of this problem among councils. The ways in which councils cope with the problem are described in some detail. Finally, the findings are compared with three similar …

An Examination Of "Right To Treatment" Standards: Mental Health Policy Within The Context Of The State Hospital System, Kathryn Glass May 1976

An Examination Of "Right To Treatment" Standards: Mental Health Policy Within The Context Of The State Hospital System, Kathryn Glass

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper discusses the use of court-imposed standards for public mental hospitals as a method of improving public mental health services. The standards set out in Wyatt v. Stickney are examined, and the author concludes that if implemented nationally such standards would transform the public hospitals. In addition, implementation would alter the power structure of mental health workers, effect the allocation of state and federal funds, and influence the larger system of mental health services. Socio-economic characteristics of public mental hospital patients, and an assessment of present care in this system are presented as central issues in mental health policy …
