An Investigation Of The Maturation Of Articulation Of Elementary School Children, Thomas D. Marshall Aug 1965

An Investigation Of The Maturation Of Articulation Of Elementary School Children, Thomas D. Marshall

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

Developmental studies of speech (12, 13, 24) have indicated that the growth of articulation skills in children follows a definite pattern, with the vowels being first mastered, then the consonants, and finally, the consonant blends. Studies generally agree that the normal child acquires essentially adult articulation by eight years of age. It may be expected, then, that in the early elementary grades, immature articulation skills are not unusual in normal children, and that at higher grade levels, immature articulation skills are relatively less common. Mills and Streit (11), in a survey of …

An Investigation Of Adaptation To The Delayed Auditory Feedback Effect By Normal Speakers, Nelson H. Bormann Jul 1965

An Investigation Of Adaptation To The Delayed Auditory Feedback Effect By Normal Speakers, Nelson H. Bormann

Masters Theses

Introduction

Research is being conducted in numerous areas of interest in an effort to better understand the functionings of the various speech deviations. One promising area of investigation is studying speech production as an automatic-control system or a servosystem. Interest in studying the theories of servosystems was greatly stimulated by the work of Nobert Wiener, who first formulated and developed the science of cybernetics. An integral aspect of cybernetic theory is the concept of controlling the behavior of a system by monitoring and evaluating the system's own output. Wiener stated that, in its simplest form, "...the feedback principle means that …

Interests, Attitudes And Personality Patterns Of Undergraduate Students In Speech Pathology And Audiology, Sandra Mary Henderson Jul 1965

Interests, Attitudes And Personality Patterns Of Undergraduate Students In Speech Pathology And Audiology, Sandra Mary Henderson

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Over the past several decades there has been increasing interest in the occupational choices of men and women, and the interests and attitudes associated with various professional groups. Since occupations are becoming increasingly more specialized, employers and educators have found that those people who perform best in the position of their choice are those who exhibit certain interests and attitudes with regard to their occupation. Colleges emphasize the necessity of counseling in order to enable students to effectively choose general areas of concentration. The fields of study chosen by students are a …

Synthesis Of Potential Anti-Tumor Agents Related To Ethanolamine. I. Phenoxyacetic Acid Derivatives, Kenneth Wayne Rodarmer Jun 1965

Synthesis Of Potential Anti-Tumor Agents Related To Ethanolamine. I. Phenoxyacetic Acid Derivatives, Kenneth Wayne Rodarmer

Masters Theses

Introduction

Derivatives of phenoxyacetic acid (PAA), because of their activity as synthetic auxins, have long been of interest in the botanical sciences. PAA itself was noted (29) to have some auxin activity. However, real interest in PAA derivatives awaited the establishment of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) as a powerful, selective herbicide (12). An enormous number of PAA analogs and homologs have been investigated for their potential in the herbicide industry, and the statistical evidence from these investigations has been used as the basis for several interesting and sometimes conflicting theories of auxin mechanisms (17, 26, 23, 27).

Physiological effects of PAA …

Land Utilization In The Allegan State Forest: A Historical Geography, Martin Lemerand May 1965

Land Utilization In The Allegan State Forest: A Historical Geography, Martin Lemerand

Masters Theses

Introduction

In Allegan County, Michigan, there exists an area of land known as the Allegan State Forest (Figs. 1 and 2). The Forest compromises 35,755 acres of land and is located just west of the city of Allegan.1 It is an area primarily noted for its forestry, wildfire conservation, and recreational facilities. Before becoming a state forest and prior to the 1930's, this land passed through sequential occupance by Indians, pioneers, lumberman, and farmers. When the forest area was first settled, the land was abundantly covered with trees. The trees soon became the victims of the lumbermen's axe, and …

A Nose In A Book By Hook Or By Crook, Pearl Sarno Apr 1965

A Nose In A Book By Hook Or By Crook, Pearl Sarno

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In any community, the children are like the sand dunes of Lake Michigan, blown about by the lake winds. During a winter, the dunes may move to a different location and the face of the shore line appears different each spring. A bit of beauty may have been buried or destroyed, roots of trees may be exposed to threaten its life but green, tough grass does appear each year, saplings spring up and survive a few years, even here and there a few forest-edge flowers and vines grow and spread. However, to be productive and produce more than chance beauty …

Growth For Citizenship, Winifred Winn Apr 1965

Growth For Citizenship, Winifred Winn

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Education today must be concerned with the values in citizenship that should be developed early in the child's life. Value, being defined as something we prize or cherish, involves deliberation and choice, In many communities children are being over-protected or under-supervised, thus leaving to the schools the training of their children in the way they should go. Therefore in the best interest of schools and society, citizenship values must be incorporated into the school program.

Planning And Democracy In France, Larry G. Massanari Apr 1965

Planning And Democracy In France, Larry G. Massanari

Honors Theses

In the beginning of 1962, France launched its Fourth Plan to cover the period 1962-1965, and entered its sixteenth year of economic planning, Parodoxically, France which has so frequently seemed determined to demonstrate to the world an absolute incapacity for self-government has at the same time carried out a complicated experiment in economic planning, the results of which have frequently been brilliant; this is not to suggest that through planning the French have found answers to all of the many difficulties which still face them. It was immediately after World War II that France embarked upon their experiment in planning. …

Parents, School And Reading, Sandra Sloan Jan 1965

Parents, School And Reading, Sandra Sloan

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Much has been written about reading. Hundreds of research projects have been carried out to determine just what can be done to improve the teaching of reading in the nation's schools. From all sides come advice, suggestions, panaceas and gimmicks to make all children accomplished readers. School mail is filled with advertisements extolling new books, workbooks, programs, and what-have-you that will greatly improve the school reading program. Millions of dollars have been spent purchasing these materials and yet reading is still a major problem in every school.

Nonreaders Are Nonexistent, Vern L. Farrow Jan 1965

Nonreaders Are Nonexistent, Vern L. Farrow

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Jack stared impatiently at the red traffic light and waited. He was anxious to get back to school after lunch. The light changed to green but as the boy stepped into the street, the sound of an approaching siren told him that the light must be ignored and he re turned to the curb. The emergency car passed, the traffic light cycled green again and Jack made his way safely across the street where he was suddenly confronted by a very large dog. The boy's initial reaction of fright was instantly dispelled when he recognized the dog's friendly intentions by …

Carcinostatic Sulfonic Acid Esters Of Selected 1,4-Diols, Robert A. Earl Jan 1965

Carcinostatic Sulfonic Acid Esters Of Selected 1,4-Diols, Robert A. Earl

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this research was to prepare the bisarylsulfonic acid esters of 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-but-2-ynediol.

This series of compounds is of interest because of the antitumor activity exhibited by the bismethanesulfonates of 1,4-butanediol and 1,4-but-2-ynediol. The compounds which were prepared were submitted to Cancer Chemotherapy National Service Center for evaluation in their anticancer program.

It was hoped that the compounds synthesized would be of pharmacological value. It was further hoped that the biological test data of these compounds would demonstrate a correlation between types of substituents on the aromatic nucleus and the degree of activity of the compounds. …
