The Study Of The Metal Complexes Of Alpha Aminohydroxamic Acids, Richard N. Nipe Nov 1966

The Study Of The Metal Complexes Of Alpha Aminohydroxamic Acids, Richard N. Nipe

Masters Theses

Introduction

The objectives of this investigation were to develop: 1) compounds similar to hydroxy urea, a compound known to have anti-tumor activity, 2) a method to prepare α-aminohydroxamic acids and to study the complexes of these compounds with several metal ions, 3) computer programs to determine the pK's1 of the hydroxamic acids and the stepwise stability constants2 for the ligands and several metal ions.

The values obtained for the stability constants were compared with values for the stability constants of acetohydroxamic acid and α-aminocarboxylic acids in an attempt to find which in the ligand formed bonds with the …

Up With The Spelldown!, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Not long ago there appeared in the newspapers an Associated Press photograph of a happily smiling boy holding in front of him a huge loving-cup. It was a pleasing picture because it looked genuine. The boy was straightforwardly posing to be photographed, not taking part in what Al Smith called "baloney," a picture ostensibly showing the actual bestowal of an award, but artificially posed afterward, with people looking a little foolish because this was not the real thing, and most people are not good actors.

Game Theory And Power Politics, Michael Decker Sep 1966

Game Theory And Power Politics, Michael Decker

Masters Theses

Preface

The contemporary argument over method reaches into all the traditional diversions of social science, of which political science is no exception. Such names as structure-functionalism, decision theory, systems analysis, behavioralism, and game theory have become commonplace identifications of political methodologies in the twentieth century. And if one consideration has generated this plethora of seemingly novel approaches to the study of politics, it is an epistemological one. Indeed, the argument seems to center around determining that kind of intellectual behavior which will best enable the student to understand political events.

It is proposed in what follows that, in the …

Foreign University Students’ Image Of The United States Of America, Austra P. Balks Aug 1966

Foreign University Students’ Image Of The United States Of America, Austra P. Balks

Masters Theses

Observations

As a foreign-born student this writer has been exposed to differing views about the United States of America, particularly with respect to its ideological background and some facets to its culture. Many of these views have not corresponded with facts observed about life in the United States, as revealed to the writer after she had resided in this country for a time. Among fellow immigrants, this writer stated that the longer one lived in the United States one's attitude became more understanding and positive toward the United States.

The writer had observed earlier that in many respects the basic …

The Application Of The Verwey-Overbeek Theory To The Relative Sediment Volume Of Kaolin-Water Dispersions, James E. Kline Aug 1966

The Application Of The Verwey-Overbeek Theory To The Relative Sediment Volume Of Kaolin-Water Dispersions, James E. Kline

Masters Theses

Introduction

This paper describes an investigation intended to: 1. observe the effect of electrolyte concentration on the stability of kaolin-water systems, 2. evaluate the relative sediment volume measurement as a tool for determining the stability of such systems, 3. assess the applicability of the Verwey-Overbeek theory of stability of lyophobic colloids for predicting the observed effects, and 4. determine if any correlation exists between the effects predicted by the theory and observed through the relative sediment volume measurement.

The relative sediment volume measurement will be shown to be dependent upon the efficiency of packing of the pigment particles, which in …

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

This study is generally concerned with an evaluation of the proficiencies of speech therapists in training. The importance of this area, while obvious, has received little formal recognition in the field of speech pathology. That this topic has not been the concern of more research may be understood when we consider a contemporary and authoritative definition of the word 'therapy'. Colby (5, p. 95) states that therapy is: "...a practical art, a craft like agriculture, or medicine or wine making in which an artisan relies on an incomplete, fragmentary of knowledge and …

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock Aug 1966

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock

Masters Theses

Introduction

The professional literature in the field of speech pathology contains a great many references to stuttering. A large part of this literature on stuttering has dealt with the problem of severity. The importance of the concept severity of stuttering can be viewed in its relation to the broad theoretical constructs in the field of stuttering. Severity is a way of quantifying the extent of abnormality or degree of interference with the normal speech process. To say that one stutter is more severe than another is to say that he appears to be more abnormal than the other. Severity of …

Identification Of Long-Tenure Hourly Factory Workers Using A Weighted Application Blank, Joffrey Michael Dornon Aug 1966

Identification Of Long-Tenure Hourly Factory Workers Using A Weighted Application Blank, Joffrey Michael Dornon

Masters Theses

A cursory examination of employment application blanks, so commonly used in modern business, reveals that two kinds of data are normally requested of a job applicant. The first kind of data are items necessary for the identification of the prospective employee: name, age, sex, address, and so on to the extent permissible and required by existing law and customary personnel administration procedures.

The use of the second kind of data contained in application blanks is seldom explicitly stated but is assumed to be of greater importance for personnel selection decisions. Information regarding previous job history, hobbies, and related activities and …

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxidation Of Primary Alcohols, Carmen Vargas Zenarosa Aug 1966

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxidation Of Primary Alcohols, Carmen Vargas Zenarosa

Masters Theses

Historical

A method of selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to the corresponding aldehydes and ketones has been developed recently, namely the use of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as the oxidizing agent, either alone or with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC)14, acid anhydrides1, or alkyl chloroformates10. The negatively polarized oxygen atom of the sulfoxide group in DMSO is ideally situated for a transfer to many electron-deficient substrates. The oxygen of the alcohol coordinates with the sulfur atom of DMSO through its oxygen atom; this is followed by β-elemination of dimethyl sulfide, thereby resulting in oxidation of the …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The Gull Lake Community Schools have been engaged in consolidating services and curriculum into eight buildings from five former school districts. Title I of the Elementary Secondary Education Act has given incentive and funds for the teachers to work cooperatively to develop worthwhile programs to benefit students. A steering committee helped to appraise the needs as identified by the staff. Working within the framework of this act, the staff members unanimously agreed that individual or small group instruction in the language arts and mathematics would be beneficial for those children with correctable academic deficiencies. It has been recommended that academic, …

The Ideal Historian, Ruler, And Philosopher As Envisioned In The Writings Of Otto, Bishop Of Freising, Lynn Lindeman Jul 1966

The Ideal Historian, Ruler, And Philosopher As Envisioned In The Writings Of Otto, Bishop Of Freising, Lynn Lindeman

Masters Theses

Introduction

Otto of Freising is best known as the philosopher of history who wrote The Two Cities and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa. Unfortunately, the interest Otto evokes is often limited to his philosophy of history. Many never go beyond the German historian Wilman's view of Otto as "the first to have a conception of the world-sequence of history."1

Otto of Freising's two historical works, The Two Cities and The Deeds of Frederick Barbarossa, are important for more than his philosophy of history. The values and ideals Otto reflects in his writings are valuable in giving one insights …

An Outline For Physical Geography In The Secondary School, David S. Mellander

Masters Theses

The Need and The Purpose

Introduction

As the earth has become more densely populated, an understanding of the space relationships between man and his environment has become essential. In particular, man needs to understand the complex interrelationship between places, and the distinctive character of places.

Major functions of geographic instruction are to guide students into discovering the distribution of physical conditions, and the interrelationships which characterize such places, as well as those between man and his environment. No other discipline attempts to discover the wholeness, order and reason in the complex totality of the landscape.

A Study Of Child Rearing Attitudes Among Negro Mothers Residing In A Low Status Neighborhood, Curtis J. Jones Jun 1966

A Study Of Child Rearing Attitudes Among Negro Mothers Residing In A Low Status Neighborhood, Curtis J. Jones

Masters Theses

Introduction

The Problem

The problem in this investigation is to determine the characteristics of lower status Negro mothers and their families and to determine whether specific characteristics are associated with the utilization or acceptance of traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes. More specifically, this investigation will attempt to determine what cognate relationships prevail in the various segments of lower status Negro mothers with respect to their exhibiting traditional or developmental child rearing attitudes and their relative social status position, family composition, and mother's social contact frequency.

It appears that in order to make more reliable generalizations about the Negro families …

The Effect Of Variables On The Penetration Of Starch Applied At The Size Press And The Relationship Of Penetration To Strength Properties, Charles H. Durfy Apr 1966

The Effect Of Variables On The Penetration Of Starch Applied At The Size Press And The Relationship Of Penetration To Strength Properties, Charles H. Durfy

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A sheet internally sized with rosin was impregnated at the size press with starch under varying conditions of temperature, moisture, and speed.

Penetration was studied with a view to final sheet properties. A sliding microtome was used to cross-section the sheets. The sections thus obtained were extracted with hot water and hydrochloric acid. A photocolormetric determination of starch was used utilizing the characteristic starch iodine reaction.

Increased temperature increased the pickup and penetration of starch. Increased moisture of the base paper initially aided pickup and penetration. High moisture tended to be retard pickup and penetration. Increasing machine speed increased pickup …

A Study Of The Efficiency Of Certain Starch-Cationic Resin Complexes, William E. Hellman Apr 1966

A Study Of The Efficiency Of Certain Starch-Cationic Resin Complexes, William E. Hellman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

An attempt is made herein to compare the efficiency of commercially available cationic starches and those prepared in the laboratory using a pearl corn starch and different cationic resins. The efficiency of each is determined through evaluation of the resulting wet-web strength and dry strength tests. Results show that cationic starches can be prepared in the mill and comparable strengths are obtained with their use.

It has long been known that cellulose developes a negative charge from the carboxyl groups when dispersed in water. The same effect is found when starch is diluted in water. Wet end addition of starch …

The Effects Of Variables On The Penetration And Pickup Of Starch Applied At The Size Press, Leonard O. Eklund Apr 1966

The Effects Of Variables On The Penetration And Pickup Of Starch Applied At The Size Press, Leonard O. Eklund

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature research is presented concerning the pickup and penetration of starch at the size press. The literature research indicates there is very little quantitative results in this area. The objective of the experimental work is to determine the effect of starch temperature, sheet moisture, and machine speed on the penetration of starch into the sheet. The depth and quantity of penetration was obtained by using a spectrophotometer to determine the concentration of starch in microtomed samples.

The experimental results indicated that increased temperature of starch solutions and increased machine speeds increases penetration. Penetration also increases with increasing moisture content …

The Portage Public Schools are now in the second year of a three-year program aimed at developing a balanced high school reading program. The first phase of the program began last year with a corrective reading program geared to those students whose reading ability was no more than three years below grade level and who were of average or above intelligence. The students selected for the program also showed some disparity between their verbal and non verbal Lorge-Thorndike scores. The corrective reading classes (fifteen to a section) met five days a week in a reading laboratory for intensive reading instruction.

Perception And The Administrator An Investigation Into The Perceptual Areas Of Difference Between The Various Levels Of An Organization, W. W. Mcintire

Masters Theses

Introduction

It is frequently voiced that most of the problems that occur in organizations are "people problems." There are the result of misunderstandings, differences of interpretation, and inadequate coordination of effort. This study is concerned with this problem area, but it should be made clear that no attempt will be made to investigate "problem people" in organizations. They may legitimately be considered as part of the problem area, however, investigation of them is beyond the realm and scope intended for this study.
