The Effect Of Surface Tension And Viscosity On Wet-Web Strength, Wayne H. Nay Apr 1967

The Effect Of Surface Tension And Viscosity On Wet-Web Strength, Wayne H. Nay

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A study of the effects of surface tension and viscosity on wet-web strength shows that they are related. Hand sheets were made and pressed on the Noble and Wood Sheet Mold. Tests were run on sheets with solids varying from 18 to 28 percent. The Instron Tensile Tester gave more consistant results for wet-web testing than did the Brecht Tester. Carboxy propyl methyl cellulose, a cationic starch, oleic acid, and sodium hydroxide were used to vary the surface tension and viscosity of the entrained water in the web. It was found that as the surface tension was lowered, the wet-web …

Look What We Got, Louis Foley Apr 1967

Look What We Got, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Among people who speak the most careless English, certain kinds of mistakes unfailingly appear, whatever individual idiosyncrasies may accompany them. Almost always, errors of grammar are confusions between forms which have some relationship but should logically be kept distinct from each other. One of the commonest is the confusion between the simple past tense and the past participle of verbs. This can go either way; a person who makes the mistake in one direction is just as likely to do the opposite in another case. So anyone who says "I seen him," "He done it," "He come," or "He run," …

A Caution Concerning The Use Of Standardized Tests, Ronald Crowell Apr 1967

A Caution Concerning The Use Of Standardized Tests, Ronald Crowell

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As teachers in the schools of this country, we pay lip service to the proposal that we must be concerned with the education of the individual. In our textbooks in college, we are reminded that the aim of good teaching is to bring about a change of behavior in the individual. In our classrooms, because of broad differences in individual reading ability and individual performance, we often find it necessary to group students into small, more homogeneous, groups so that we can meet the reading needs of the individual student.

The Recurring Annual Problem, Dorothy Towner Apr 1967

The Recurring Annual Problem, Dorothy Towner

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The majestic strains of Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" being played on a rented organ from the stage of the beautiful new high school floated down the school halls. The joy and happiness of the girls and boys busily stepping into their earned places in the grad uation procession were sobered only by the dignity of the blue caps and gowns to which they were feverishly giving last minute adjustment.

The Alliance For Progress: Policy Continuation Or Actual Reform?, Mario Mion Apr 1967

The Alliance For Progress: Policy Continuation Or Actual Reform?, Mario Mion

Honors Theses

The Alliance for Progress appears to falter within its own objectives. As such this is not unique to this aid program; other programs have encountered difficulties in their operation. However, the extent of the Alliance's failure to meet its stated goals raises the question of the efficacy of the program itself and, what is more significant, of the intent of the Alliance as a program of aid and as a tool for reform. In fact, the operational or mechanical difficulties per se are not surprising considering the obstacles Involved. Traditionally divergent economic and political patterns and social attitudes, here in …

Green Lumber, An Introduction To Failure, John Brewster Jan 1967

Green Lumber, An Introduction To Failure, John Brewster

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As a comparative newcomer to the study of the problems of reading instruction, I have that frustratingly inadequate feeling that goes along with having many, many questions and very few answers. Many of my questions are concerned with "why." Why is it that this child with adequate mental capacity, physical health, experiential background and stable environment fails to learn to read? I'm aware, of course, that many answers are available in the volumes and volumes of current literature, but I haven't dug them all out for evaluation. Somehow, I expect I'll be a little late in getting around to them …

The Self Concept And Its Relation To Speech And Reading, Dorothy Edna Smith, Katharine G. Butler Jan 1967

The Self Concept And Its Relation To Speech And Reading, Dorothy Edna Smith, Katharine G. Butler

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

One of the most exciting prospects in our search for excellence in the teaching of reading is emerging from the field of psychology. By now it is axiomatic that our efficiency as teachers is inextricably bound up with the psychological aspects of the individual student. All of us have been told over and over again to Pay Attention To The Individual. As a matter of fact this admonition has become so universal that it now has attained the status of being called by its initials: PATTI.

The Use Of Cationic Agents To Increase The Efficiency Of Titanium Dioxide In Paper, Richard Clapp Dec 1966

The Use Of Cationic Agents To Increase The Efficiency Of Titanium Dioxide In Paper, Richard Clapp

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Handsheets were made with a bleached sulfite pulp, titanium dioxide and cationic agents. The optical properties of these sheets were studied in order to determine and compare the efficiency of the titanium dioxide retained. The cationic agents used in this study were a quaternary ammonium salt, a polyamide, cationic starches made with these two chemicals, and a commercial cationic starch.

When the optical properties of handsheets made from these substances were compared, it was found that the quaternary ammonium salt gave the highest opacity but the lowest retention. The polyamide gave lower opacities but higher retentions. The cationic starches made …

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman Dec 1966

Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

Budget Effects On Defense Planning, Charles Ventura Nov 1966

Budget Effects On Defense Planning, Charles Ventura

Masters Theses

Preface

The Department of Defense (DOD) program budget was developed to link defense planning to defense spending. The budget is designed to reflect total program costs. Military managers require such costs in order to make optimum allocation of resources. The program budget has been a useful tool in bringing uniformity to military plans but its effectiveness, the author contends, has been limited because it contains inaccurate cost data.

The author intends to prove that incorrect financial information is included in the budget because some resource expenditures cannot be accurately traced. The same resource is "common" to several different weapon systems. …
