Uniting Efforts In Effective Reading Remediation, Betty L. Hagberg Jul 1971

Uniting Efforts In Effective Reading Remediation, Betty L. Hagberg

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Nearly every classroom contains some children who have not responded well to a developmental reading program and need remedial help from the reading specialist. These students have not achieved up to their full potential for a variety of reasons, and unless they receive remedial instruction the gap between achievement and potential will grow wider. The reading therapist is faced with the primary responsibility of providing the student's remedial work. However, it is not his task alone as the classroom teacher shares in this obligation. The child spends most of his time in the regular classroom and only a few short …

Reading Maketh A Full Man, Abraham Blinderman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

My freshman class rejoices. It is our first meeting and I do not ask the apprehensive matriculants to write the traditional autobiographical essay to probe their linguistic and literary aptitudes. Before dismissing the class, I assign a reading-"My Wood" by E. M. Forster-for the next meeting.

Performance Evaluation Of The Moistron And Inframike Moisture Gauges On The Pilot Paper Machine, David L. Forsman Apr 1971

Performance Evaluation Of The Moistron And Inframike Moisture Gauges On The Pilot Paper Machine, David L. Forsman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The following work pertains to the correlation of the Industrial Nucleonics Moistron moisture meter and the General Electric Inframike. The readings from these two devices were compared to each other and to moisture on an oven dry basis. The moisture readings were taken on a furnish of a 50-50 hardwood, softwood mixture which had various additives added by means of metering pumps. The basis weights of the furnishes were varied for each of the additives.

The readings on the Moistron were not taken from the machine chart but rather from a calibration tape placed below said chart. The General Electric …

High Temperature, High Pressure Oxidation Of Primary Sludges, Dale R. St. Peter Apr 1971

High Temperature, High Pressure Oxidation Of Primary Sludges, Dale R. St. Peter

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The problem of disposal of high ash papermill sludges has yet to be resolved. High temperature, high pressure wet air oxidation may have the potential to fill this gap in our technology.

A sample of high ash primary sludge was obtained, thickened, wet air oxidized, purified, and evaluated for brightness and abrasiveness. The product was grossly discolored with iron oxide. However, removal of the oxide yielded a high brightness product with low abrasiveness. This product appeared to be well suited for use as a filler material.

In order for this process to be acceptable as a method for obtaining a …

The Effect Of Sample Length, Fiber Length And Rate Of Loading On Tensile And T.E.A., Rajendra Patel Apr 1971

The Effect Of Sample Length, Fiber Length And Rate Of Loading On Tensile And T.E.A., Rajendra Patel

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to study the effect of fiber length, sample length and rate of loading on tensile and TEA. The most important aspect of this study was the elimination or controlling of variables which appeared in all related studies to date. With this in mind, an experimental procedure was drawn up which would eliminate or control these variables. The original pulp was taken without any cutting, formed into handsheets, and pressed. The handsheets were then cut in order to reduce the fiber length while the handsheets were wet. Cutting the fibers was done with a paper …

The Effects Of Selected Pilot Paper Machine Variables On Web Shrinkage, John Hughes Apr 1971

The Effects Of Selected Pilot Paper Machine Variables On Web Shrinkage, John Hughes

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of certain machine variables on shrinkage and also to determine a shrinkage and strength profile across the width of the sheet. Machine conditions varied were the draws and the amount of pressure on the presses. Cross direction shrinkage was measured by using felt marking pens to mark three sections across the web. Machine direction shrinkage was determined by using a cogged wheel to punch a series of small holes into the sheet which could then be measured at the reel. Press loading was shown to have no effect on cross …

The Effect Of Clay Particle Size On The Optical Properties Of Filled Handsheets, Arkesh Pandit Apr 1971

The Effect Of Clay Particle Size On The Optical Properties Of Filled Handsheets, Arkesh Pandit

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

In this experiment two coating clays and two filler clays were used as fillers to find the effect of particle size on optical properties on filled handsheets.

Klondyke and Nokarb were used as a filler clays to improve the optical properties. Coating clays, H. T. predispersed and Ultra-white-90 were less effective than filler clays. Scattering co-efficient can be improved with coating clays. The reason may be the smaller the particle size better scattering co-efficient. This experiment suggests alum is not necessary in order to improve the opacity and brightness of filler clays. Retention of Klyondyke and Nokarb increased without alum, …

The Influence Of Visual Perception On The Academic Performance Of The Mentally Retarded, Shirley A. Knapp Apr 1971

The Influence Of Visual Perception On The Academic Performance Of The Mentally Retarded, Shirley A. Knapp

Masters Theses

Visual perception refers to the process of receiving and analyzing sensory information through the medium of the eye. The report extensively surveys literature concerning the developmental processes and characteristics of visual perception. The research tended to show a relationship between visual perceptual maturity and academic achievement. The prominent remedial programs were discussed in conjunction with supporting or disputing research concerning the alleged benefits. Finally, studies dealing with the visual perception of the mentally retarded were proffered.

A research project was conducted with mentally retarded and non-retarded subjects, matched according to mental age. The Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception was …

Avoidance And Escape Responses In A Free Operant Avoidance Procedure As A Function Of Avoidance-Shock Intervals, Kathleen M. Krumhus Apr 1971

Avoidance And Escape Responses In A Free Operant Avoidance Procedure As A Function Of Avoidance-Shock Intervals, Kathleen M. Krumhus

Masters Theses

Rats were trained on an unsignalled shock procedure, using a two lever apparatus. Responses on one lever postponed the onset of electric shock for a specified time period, the Avoidance-Shock interval. A response on the second lever terminated shock and delayed the onset of the next shock eight seconds, the Escape-Shock interval. Shock was continuous until the subject depressed the second lever. Changes in response rate on both levers were recorded as a function of manipulations of the duration of the Avoidance-Shock interval.

If responses on both bars are summed, data obtained are comparable with findings obtained from the manipulation …

A Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stimulation Seeking, John L. Kasten Apr 1971

A Comparison Of Three Measures Of Stimulation Seeking, John L. Kasten

Masters Theses

An attempt was made to determine the comparability and construct validity of three instruments: the Sensation Seeking Scale (Zuckermsn, Kolin, Price & Zoob, 1964); the Change Seeker Index (Garlington & Shimota, 1964); and the Similes Preference Inventory (Pearson & Maddi, 1966). These instruments, and a measure of drug use which was constructed by the investigator, were administered to 52 college students and 23 high school students. Product-moment correlations were calculated among these instruments and between each instrument and age, sex, marital status and amount of education. Several sets of partial correlations were, also calculated.

A substantial correlation was found between …

Affective Criticism: Theories Of Emotion And Synaesthesis In The Experience Of Literature, Edward Jayne Feb 1971

Affective Criticism: Theories Of Emotion And Synaesthesis In The Experience Of Literature, Edward Jayne

English Faculty Publications

The "Affective Fallacy" labeled by Wimsatt and Beardsley and denigrated by an entire generation of critics must be restored'to legitimacy-as probably the most fundamental principle of literature. The effect of a text takes precedence over the objectivity of its "intra-referential":content since this content is meaningful only to the extent that it produces this effect. The concerted effort of formalists to deny or somehow bypass this self-evident axiom has been unique in the history of criticism and may be traced to a variety of causes, not the least of which has been a conservative isolation of literature from its social context. …

Philosophy And The Liberal Arts, Michael J. Buckley S.J. Jan 1971

Philosophy And The Liberal Arts, Michael J. Buckley S.J.

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The focus of these remarks is a simple, general question: How should philosophy be taught to college students? Notice that the possibility is simply taken for granted. We do not ask if we can teach but how we can teach. Is this to treat philosophy like any other field within the humanities or sciences? We give instruction in mathematics, physics, history, English literature; can we not also teach philosophy? An etymological rephrasing would suggest this assumption is open to serious reservations. How can college students be taught "to love wisdom?" Can so radical a personality-commitment be taught, be the product …

The Small Liberal Arts College: No Apologies Needed, Leonard Tompos Jan 1971

The Small Liberal Arts College: No Apologies Needed, Leonard Tompos

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The question of the small college's future likely will be determined by the individual colleges themselves. If they make themselves irrelevant to their students, as well as to society at large, the small college may at best then hope for a hand-to-mouth marginal existence. But such a situation would, indeed be ironic. The irony would lie in the fact that the small, so-called liberal arts college seemingly can most effectively offer not only the type or quality of education most needed today in our society, but also can provide the optimum educational settings and conditions.

Hegel And The Rebellion And Counter-Rebellion Of Youth, Rudolf J. Siebert Jan 1971

Hegel And The Rebellion And Counter-Rebellion Of Youth, Rudolf J. Siebert

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Can the philosopher and educator Hegel help American youth overcome romantic subjectivity and liberate itself toward a rational and free existence? Can he help them in the dramatic social development from civil society to the real non-repressive supra-national or even continental state? To lead Hegel and American youth into a new and honest encounter would be very worthwhile and necessary, but difficult. This new encounter would presuppose the success of an even more difficult task. This would be to let American youth take root in that healthy confidence, which Hegel characterized as threefold: 1) confidence is science, 2) faith in …
