The Preparation Of Reading Teachers For The Disadvantaged, Joseph B. Tremonti Jan 1971

The Preparation Of Reading Teachers For The Disadvantaged, Joseph B. Tremonti

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

From September 1969 to September 1970 Loyola University of New Orleans conducted an EPDA Experienced Teachers Fellowship Program in Reading Instruction for Elementary and Junior High School Teachers. The purpose of the program, funded by the United States Office of Education, was to prepare 20 teachers chosen from Louisiana Public and Private schools to teach reading to disadvantaged youth.

Ex Oriente Lux: Eastern Teachings Offer A Renaissance In Higher Education, Henry Winthrop Jan 1971

Ex Oriente Lux: Eastern Teachings Offer A Renaissance In Higher Education, Henry Winthrop

Perspectives (1969-1979)

With Yoga and Karate the educational staple of all citizens, the achievement of the good life is assured. When that time comes the words of one of our patriotic songs will carry their most impressive meaning. "Oh, beautiful for spacious skies" will then refer to the first national community that succeeded in making full est use of man's hidden powers via the method of universal spiritual education.

The Roads And The Purposes, Edward H. Levi Jan 1971

The Roads And The Purposes, Edward H. Levi

Perspectives (1969-1979)

We are all concerned about the ability of education to respond to diverse tasks which have been placed upon it. These tasks require many more kinds of institutions, much more flexibility in the kinds of programs and means of instruction. Some means has to be found, and I do not believe the road of subsidy, by itself, will accomplish it, to encourage the appearance and participation of these institutions, and the trying out of programs and methods of instruction.

A more open system has risks, but it could reassemble to greater advantage the strength which is there. Obviously, such an …

Scholarship And Ideology, Bhikhu Parekh Jan 1971

Scholarship And Ideology, Bhikhu Parekh

Perspectives (1969-1979)

One of the most distinctive characteristics of the modern university is the tremendous emphasis placed on research, on "expanding the frontiers of knowledge." The faculty has argued, and the university authorities have in many cases accepted, that research is the only worth-while academic activity and that the university largely exists simply to promote it. In its name the faculty has sometimes even ignored, with official connivance, many of its academic obligations. Although, from the standpoint of the university, teaching is more important, research has become a new industry, a new god whose directives, it is believed, only the illiterate could …

The Effects Of Repetitive Stimulation On The Aggressive Behavior Of The Fighting Cock: A Test For Habituation, Howard E. Farris, Thomas W. Cey Jan 1971

The Effects Of Repetitive Stimulation On The Aggressive Behavior Of The Fighting Cock: A Test For Habituation, Howard E. Farris, Thomas W. Cey

Honors Theses

A fighting cock was repeatedly presented with its own mirror image. The rate of aggressive display and attack behavior elicited by the mirror rapidly decreased to zero. Subsequent exposure of the experimental subject to a live target bird was found to be sufficient to reinstate responding to the mirror. However, upon repeated exposure to the mirror image alone aggressive responding quickly decreased again to zero.

The Effects Of Ph On Cationic Agents To Increase The Efficiency Of Tio2 In Paper, Stanley L. Oakleaf Dec 1970

The Effects Of Ph On Cationic Agents To Increase The Efficiency Of Tio2 In Paper, Stanley L. Oakleaf

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The effect of pH on the efficiency of the cationic agents, Kymene 557 (Epichlorohydrin) and Tydex (Polyethylenimine), was studied, and the efficiencies of the two cationic agents were compared.

The pH at which cationic agents are most effective, considering percent retention of titanium dioxide, is pH 5.7 at the time of titanium dioxide slurry addition. The pH for optimum opacity in a sheet is pH 6.0.

A pH that is controlled by alum, rather than independently of alum, produces higher titanium dioxide retentions and opacities. Maximum efficiency is not controlled by pH alone. An alum loading of about 3.5% should …

The Application Of Stress-Strain Analysis In Routine Control, Richard L. Memmer Dec 1970

The Application Of Stress-Strain Analysis In Routine Control, Richard L. Memmer

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Many of the empirical strength tests used for determining end use performance of a paper sheet do not give a true indication of actual sheet properties and performance. The empirical tests of burst, tear, and folding endurance were made on eighteen paper samples of different grades of papers. The fundamental tests of tensile strength, elongation, and tensile energy absorption were also made on the same samples using a stress-strain tester. The fundamental tests were used in showing deficiencies and discrepancies in the empirical test values.

The discrepancies found indicated a need for increased fundamental testing to be use in predicting …

Cobalt(Iii) Complexes With 1,2-Propanediaminediacetic Acid, Paul John Magnell Dec 1970

Cobalt(Iii) Complexes With 1,2-Propanediaminediacetic Acid, Paul John Magnell

Masters Theses

Introduction

Aminocarboxylic acid cobalt(III) complexes have been of interest to inorganic chemists since 1909 when Ley and Winkler isolated violet and rose colored geometric isomers of tris amino acid complexes of glycine and alanine.1 More recently, considerable interest has been shown in the study of the stereochemistry and optical activity arising from configurational and vicinal interactions of these complexes. Nuclear magnetic resonance of the methylene protons on the carboxylate portion of the coordinated ligand has also been studied.

Of immediate interest to this study is the stereo-chemistry of complexes containing flexible tetradentate ligands. A tetradentate ligand may be constructed …

Masters Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this research endeavor was to determine the structures of the adducts of dichloroketene with diphenylfulvene and benzodiphenylfulvene. Structure elucidation was attempted by chemical degradation and nmr analysis.

The structures of the adducts of dichloroketene with cyclopentadiene1,2 and indene3,4 have been determined by previous workers. The influence of the exocyclic double bond on the mode of cycloaddition is unknown.
