The Development And Empirical Validation Of A Teaching Program, Arlene Chmil Dec 1971

The Development And Empirical Validation Of A Teaching Program, Arlene Chmil

Masters Theses

The original purpose of this study was to teach college students to write psychology laboratory reports. A programmed text on how to draw a graph that would meet the publication requirements as specified by the American Psychological Association was written and tested on a small sample of psychology stidents. Results showed that the rules were not adequate discriminative stimuli for controlling behavior. It was necessary to give the students discrimination training with examples related to those rules. There was a high percent of errors on rules that pertained to the concepts of the independent and dependent variables, and the task …

Did You See?, Betty L. Hagberg Oct 1971

Did You See?, Betty L. Hagberg

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Did You See "Are We Really Preparing Reading Specialists?" This direct and challenging article by Richard W. O'Donnell questions the preparation of corrective and remedial reading specialists. He points out an area in which reading teachers' competencies must be improved and suggests a basic bibliography of literature and materials which would assist them. This article appears in the May 1971 issue of The Journal of the Reading Specialist.

Reading In The Secondary Schools, Kenneth Vandermeulen Oct 1971

Reading In The Secondary Schools, Kenneth Vandermeulen

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

During the past school year, the writer mailed letters to principals of over two hundred high schools in Michigan, asking questions which pertained to teaching reading on the secondary level. We wanted to learn, first, whether administrators were concerned about reading problems on the junior high and high school levels; and second, we wanted to find out how much information in the field of reading was readily accessible to teachers of secondary classes.

The Therapist's Approach To The Study Of The Disabled Reader, An Allopathic Concept, Homer L.J. Carter Oct 1971

The Therapist's Approach To The Study Of The Disabled Reader, An Allopathic Concept, Homer L.J. Carter

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Many disabled readers do not respond to instruction by the classroom teacher. Approximately three per cent of the school population requires detailed diagnosis and treatment, generally implemented by the reading clinician and his team. These emergency cases necessitate allopathic treatment which is carried out by the reading therapist. In this paper the writer contrasts homeopathic and allopathic remediation and illustrates the latter in its application to a disabled reader. A rigorous system of diagnosis and treatment is recommended.

"The Application Of Zeta Potential For The Effective Retention Of Titanium Dioxide In Chemically Modified Systems", John W. Clapp Sep 1971

"The Application Of Zeta Potential For The Effective Retention Of Titanium Dioxide In Chemically Modified Systems", John W. Clapp

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This study was done to determine how to obtain maximum effective filler retention in a fiber and titanium dioxide system. Retention of fillers in a fibrous system is greatly influenced through the use of high molecular weight polymers. It was found that by using cationic and anionic polymers in the same system, a synergistic effect results which yields a higher effective retention than if either polymers were used along. Furthermore, by precisely controlling the amounts of each polymer so as to obtain the isoelectric point in zeta potential; the peak effective retention is reached.

The Role Of D-Gluconic Acid In The Regulation Of The Synthesis Of The Enzymes Of The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Steven C. Quay Aug 1971

The Role Of D-Gluconic Acid In The Regulation Of The Synthesis Of The Enzymes Of The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway In Pseudomonas Fluorescens, Steven C. Quay

Honors Theses

Induction of Entner-Duodoroff pathway enzymes in Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated to study the role of gluconate as a possible inducer. Glucose oxidase-deficient mutants were isolated and characterized. One of these mutants, gox-7, was deficient in particulate glucose oxidase; another mutant, gox-17, was deficient in particulate glucose and gluconate oxidase activities. Gluconate, but not glucose, induced synthesis of gluconokinase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydratase in both mutants. High constitute levels of 2-keto-3-deoxy-6-phosphogluconate aldolase were found when both mutants were grown on glucose. Growth of parent and both mutant strains on glycerol also resulted in high levels of Entner-Doudoroff pathway enzymes. It was concluded …

The Effect Of Filler Distribution On Sheet Optical Properties, David T. Rasley Aug 1971

The Effect Of Filler Distribution On Sheet Optical Properties, David T. Rasley

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

It is becoming increasingly important to the paper industry to be able to produce paper with high brightness and opacity. Good formation is also highly important. For these reasons, the industry is investigating the way the fines, fiber, and filler are distributed using the different types of paper machines.

Through this thesis work, it will be investigated how the filler distribution affects the optical properties of a sheet and what filler distribution will give maximum scattering power, brightness and opacity. From this it may be possible to suggest what paper machine variables will give filler distributions with improved optical properties.

A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks Aug 1971

A Study Of The Effects Of A Reading Program For Reluctant Readers, Florence Evelyn Banks

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to obtain some statistical evidence concerning the effects of a reading program for high school students rated as reluctant readers on their reading habits and attitudes. The initial problem which motivated the study was that assignments to read novels were resisted by this group. The students can read, but do not.

The hypothesis is that if students are given a program with books of 200 pages or less that have in the content some universalities that will satisfy the adult interests of students, attitudes about reading will change and there will be an improvement …
