The Effects Of Staff Training, Incentive, And Information And Feedback On Incidence Of Vandalism In A Dormitory Setting, Donald G. Landeck

Masters Theses

The effects of staff training, incentive, and information and feedback on incidence of vandalism were compared in a four dormitory complex. The staff training condition was implemented on resident advisors and taught alcohol education, confrontation skills, and programming skills. For the incentive dormitory, residents received money in a floor fund which was then exchanged for back-up reinforcers. Residents in the information and feedback dormitory were prompted to reduce vandalism via flyers, activities, and a feedback chart posted on each floor. All dormitories experienced an increase in the drinking age from 18 to 21 years of age during the second semester …

The Relationship Between Beethoven's Heiligenstadt Testament And His Nine Symphonies, Thomas Mitchell

Honors Theses

The main consideration throughout all the paper will be. the correlation between Beethoven's symphonies and his Heiligenstadt Testament. Because the so-called "Battle" Symphony is not a true symphony at all (being written for a huge, mechanical contraption), it will not be dealt with at all.

A Study Of Decision Origins And Their Relationship To Selected Elementary Principals' Consultative Responses In Decision-Making Situations, Shawn Peter Dryer

Dissertations

The Problem. The purpose of this inquiry was to study elementary principals' responses to decisions. Situations that required a decision from the principal originated: (1) with superordinates, (2) with peers, (3) with the principal himself, (4) with subordinates, (5) with students, and (6) outside the formal school organization. The principals' responses studied were: (1) rely on self, (2) consult with a confidante, (3) consult with a group, (4) delegate the decision to others, and (5) decide to make no decision. Further purposes of the study were to: (1) assemble and analyze data related to decision origins and principals' responses, (2) …

The Power Of Situations: An Approach To Understanding Powerlessness And Oppression, Dennis Saleebey, Mary Ski Hunter Mar 1980

The Power Of Situations: An Approach To Understanding Powerlessness And Oppression, Dennis Saleebey, Mary Ski Hunter

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Much of the difficulty people have in organizing, directing, and coping with their lives is, perhaps, directly traceable to their lack of awareness of, and erroneous assumptions about, the interactional contexts in which they seem or feel powerless. This is especially true, but not exclusively so, of the poor and ethnic, sexual, and political minorities. To the extent that powerlessness exists and is implicated in the various miseries of existence, the role of social worker as advocate, broker, counselor, or agent of change might profitably and accurately be defined in interactional, structural terms.

Aspects Of The Sociology Of Psychiatry, Hans S. Falck Mar 1980

Aspects Of The Sociology Of Psychiatry, Hans S. Falck

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

There can be little doubt that for the social scientist interested in the case of psychiatry there is much to learn. Not only is psychiatry a specialty in medicine, with a variety of subspecialities, is also enjoys links to other professions such as clinical psychology, psychiatric nursing and psychiatric social work. While in some sense this provides psychiatry the opportunity to be the renaissance man in medicine -- a situation which might elicit envy from others less universal and catholic -- it also causes it great difficulties and troubles. Nooone seems to know where psychiatry begins and ends; it suffers …

The Deinstitutionalization Of Juvenile Status Offenders: New Myths And Old Realities, C. Aaron Mcneece Mar 1980

The Deinstitutionalization Of Juvenile Status Offenders: New Myths And Old Realities, C. Aaron Mcneece

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Claims are being made for deinstitutionalization that obscure some of the lesser known, negative effects. Within the juvenile justice system, for example, many juveniles who were previously institutionalized as juvenile status offenders are being relabelled and institutionalized as jivenile delinquents. In the state system studied in this report, the total number of juveniles in institutional programs did not decrease during the period of "deinstitutionalization."

Procedures For The Maintenance And Generalization Of Achieved Behavioral Change, John S. Wodarski Mar 1980

Procedures For The Maintenance And Generalization Of Achieved Behavioral Change, John S. Wodarski

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Procedures for the maintenance and generalization of achieved behavioral change in anti-social adolescents are reviewed. A review of follow-up studies which provides the rationale for the incorporation of such procedures in practice is initially elaborated. Specific items discussed are possible avenues to the maintenance and generalization of behavior: social networks, peers, and parents; training socially relevant behaviors; changing the conditions of training; gradually removing or fading the contingencies; delayed reinforcement; and self control procedures. Throughout the manuscript relevant case illustrations are reviewed.

Work Ethic And Work Incentives: Values And Income Maintenance Reform, Beverly G. Toomey Mar 1980

Work Ethic And Work Incentives: Values And Income Maintenance Reform, Beverly G. Toomey

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although the American belief system surrounding the concept of work has been analyzed and challenged by social scientists seeking solutions to the problem of poverty, the strength of the work ethic philosophy is still evident in public resistance to welfare reform which would support adequate income maintenance and government efforts at job creation. This paper discusses the relationship between the work ethic philosophy, job creation programming and welfare reform. It reviews relevant theoretical and empirical literature and identifies some misconceptions which continue to hamper policy formulation and program development in welfare reform.

Archaeological Technical Reports

Following negotiation of a contract (dated 2 Jul 80) between the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Michigan History Division, Michigan Department of State, and Western Michigan University, authorizing archaeological investigation of the M-66 right-of-way between the Villages of Six Lakes and Remus, Michigan, a team of archaeologists from the Department of Anthropology undertook both on-site examination of the project area and a thorough literature/ documents search in order to determine whether road improvement activities would adversely impact significant cultural resources. There follows a report of our research program, together with a series of recommendations based upon our findings.

The Role Of Reading Specialist In Developing Iep's (Individual Education Programs), Shirley B. Merlin, Sue F. Rogers Jan 1980

The Role Of Reading Specialist In Developing Iep's (Individual Education Programs), Shirley B. Merlin, Sue F. Rogers

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Everywhere, supervisors, teachers and education specialists are busily engaged in inservice meetings and workshops in an effort to become familiar with writing, implementing and revising Individual Education Programs (IEP's) for children eligible or enrolled in a Special Education Program. The provision in The Education For All Handicapped Children Act, Public Law 94-142, requiring an IEP for each handicapped child has caused a great deal of activity and development in the field of Special Education.

A Short-Cut To Testing Passage Comprehension, J Jaap Tuinman, Charles K. Kinzer, Neal A. Muhtadi

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In this study the feasibility of administering the Woodcock Passage Comprehension Test in written rather than oral form was examined. ** In their short life the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests (Woodcock. 1973) have quickly found wide-spread usage. A critical review of the tests by Tuinman (1978) points out various limitations to the claims made by Woodcock for his tests. but nevertheless recognizes this battery as an important and useful contribution to the field.

Psycholinguistics Applied To Reading Instruction, A Sterl Artley Jan 1980

Psycholinguistics Applied To Reading Instruction, A Sterl Artley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Teachers who are doing their homework in the way of professional reading are meeting with increased frequency the word, psycholinguistics, especially as it relates to reading. One might assume that the very appearance of the word connotes some abstract body of knowledge having meaning only to language theoreticians. On the other hand it is possible that once understood, the word may be a label for a developing body of knowledge that has far-reaching implications for reading teachers. In fact, one might discover that for the most part psycholinguistic thinking puts into a new context much that has been accepted and …

Nonvisual Aspects Of Reading, Duane R. Tovey Jan 1980

Nonvisual Aspects Of Reading, Duane R. Tovey

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Psycholinguistic research has recently characterized reading as a communicative process whereby the reader predicts the thoughts of an author by sampling as little of the visual display (print) as possible (Goodman, 1967). How is it possible for a reader to predict an author's thoughts accurately without processing every segment of print? In addition to minimal visual cues, readers utilize both their oral language abilities and past experiences to predict an author's intentions - assuming they share common language patterns and experiences.

Differentiating Text Assignments In Content Areas: Slicing The Task, John R. Readence, David Moore Jan 1980

Differentiating Text Assignments In Content Areas: Slicing The Task, John R. Readence, David Moore

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

There are several ways to accommodate content reading assignments with students' varied reading levels. Rieck (1977) reported that many times content teachers simply do not expect their students to read the text. She found that tests given in content classrooms often covered only material from lectures and class discussions rather than text reading. In addition, students were rarely required to discuss their assigned readings.

Weighting Miscues In Informal Inventories: A Precautionary Note, James V. Hoffman Jan 1980

Weighting Miscues In Informal Inventories: A Precautionary Note, James V. Hoffman

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Even among those who are not readily in agreement with the numerous implications for instruction being put forward in the name of a "psycholinguistic" model of reading, there is substantial support for the constructive dialogue and spirited interactions which have been generated. The enthusiasm of some, however, has, at times, been taken to such extremes that the reality of the classroom has all but been ignored. Recently, for example, my students encountered some difficulty in reconciling certain practical applications of miscue techniques with another fundamental precept of reading instruction; that is, the critical role of successful practice in connected reading …
