Application Of A Kraft Mill Mathematical Model Of A Pdp-11, Deborah A. Larsen
Application Of A Kraft Mill Mathematical Model Of A Pdp-11, Deborah A. Larsen
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The need to estimate the effects of a design or operating change in kraft pulping and recovery processes has resulted in the development of a working mathematical model. This model is a series of equations which evaluate significant chemical flows and losses, cooking rates and process economics. Through careful application to a PDP-11 computer system, this model is available for economic evaluation of process changes to improve pulp quality. The information necessary to start up, run and understand the data is covered along with discussion of the history of the development of mathematical modelling.

The Triumph Of Chiropractic - And Then What?, Walter I. Wardwell
The Triumph Of Chiropractic - And Then What?, Walter I. Wardwell
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The evolution of chiropractic from a marginal health profession to the strongest and most popular alternative to orthodox medicine in the United States is examined and compared with osteopathy and naturopathy. Evidence is offered that 1974 was the landmark year for recognition of chiropractors (e.g., accreditation of colleges, reimbursement for services under Medicare) and relaxation of the American Medical Association's policy of active and overt opposition (e.g., elimination from its code of ethics of the tabu on professional association. The public policy question of the future status of chiropractors is raised and alternatives considered. It is concluded that the most …
American Health Care: Paradigm Structures And The Parameters Of Change, Allen W. Imershein
American Health Care: Paradigm Structures And The Parameters Of Change, Allen W. Imershein
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Recent commentary on the health care scene in the U.S. has moved increasingly toward explanations of why little or no change has occurred despite many declarations of "crisis." From Alford's (1975) elitist analysis in Health Care Politics to Navarro's (1976) marxist analysis in Medicine Under Capitalism, critics in and out of the social sciences have tried to make sense of the array of current problems and the apparent lack of response to or change in them. These analyses are in striking contrast to earlier commentaries (e.g., Schwartz, 1971; Garfield, 1970; Anderson, 1972; Citizens Board, 1972) which, while highly critical of …
The Good Life: Who's Practicing Healthy Life-Styles?, Ann S. Ford, W. Scott Ford
The Good Life: Who's Practicing Healthy Life-Styles?, Ann S. Ford, W. Scott Ford
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
With the birth of scientific medicine in the late 1800s, the responsibility for 'health' was increasingly removed from the individual and replaced by a dependence upon medical intervention and required public health measures. Individual responsibility was viewed largely in terms of assuring accessibility for the individual (and his/her family) to the professional health delivery system. The need for health care, therefore, was seen as episodic necessity -- not as a continuing individual responsibility.

Changing Physician Ideologies On The Care Of The Dying: Themes And Possible Explanations, John Macdougall
Changing Physician Ideologies On The Care Of The Dying: Themes And Possible Explanations, John Macdougall
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
An analysis of changing physician ideologies regarding the care of elderly dying patients, as expressed in technical journals read by American physicians. Markedly more titles concerning terminal care are found in Index Medicus in 1968- 78 than in 1960-67. In one journal, physicians are only after 1964 urged to tell patients openly about their condition and after 1969, to improve cooperation within professional teams. Two explanations of these data are tentatively explored: 1) a Parsonian explanation, whereby medical ideologies reflect professional autonomy and the influence of internalized moral norms; 2) a Marxist explanation, whereby medical ideologies reflect physicians' transformation from …
The Aging Of Recycled Fibers, Martha M. Dubbeld
The Aging Of Recycled Fibers, Martha M. Dubbeld
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The object of this thesis is to study the aging of recycled paper, focusing on strength and optical properties. To observe the changes in these properties, the following experimental procedure was used. 100% softwood fibers were pulped, made into handsheets, tested, artificially aged, again tested, repulped and bleached before being made into handsheets once again. Because of cross-linking due to heating, the aging strength losses were masked.

The Removal Of Hot Melt Adhesives From Recycled Paper Stock By The Froth Flotation Method, Dennis G. Nivison
The Removal Of Hot Melt Adhesives From Recycled Paper Stock By The Froth Flotation Method, Dennis G. Nivison
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The object of this report is to explore the area of flotation as a means of removing hot adhesive from recycled paper stock. The major area of research resolved around choosing a surfactant capable of good performance in enhancing the flotation of adhesive and minimizing fiber loss. This surfactant was chosen by using a combination of zeta - potential studies and a flotation study in which 3 surfactants were screened. The highest performance was given by Rohm and Haas Triton N-100 followed respectively by X-114 and X-165. Even though all the surfactants had approximately the same high level of adhesive …
Plybonding And The Belbond Multi-Ply Former, Mary Jane Hart
Plybonding And The Belbond Multi-Ply Former, Mary Jane Hart
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
This study was used to evaluate the improved plybond strength of the paperboard produced by the BelBond Multi-ply former. Samples of the headbox and plies after the couch were tested for Canadian Standard Freeness and related to fines content. An increase in CSF after forming shows a fine loss and loss of fiber specific surface area. The plybond increase is attributed to consistency of stock during joining the plies, the twin wire function, and dewatering in both directions of the web. Further fiber balance studies and moisture content analysis upon joining of the plies would be recommended.
The Chemical Buildup In A Closed Water System Using Recycled Fiber Furnish, Stephen R. Tremont
The Chemical Buildup In A Closed Water System Using Recycled Fiber Furnish, Stephen R. Tremont
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
In recirculating whitewater in a closed water system, the solids will increase leading to operational problems such as corrosion, scale, reduced drainage rates, reduced wire life, increased temperatures, felt plugging, foam, and dirt. In dealing with these problems, whitewater samples from a conventional seven vat cylinder board machine were tested for chemical composition. The machine operates on a closed water loop and produces approximately 250 tons per day recycled boxboard. Tested anions included chloride, silica, phosphates, nitrates, sulfate, sulfide and tannin-lignin. Cations analyzed included calcium, barium, iron, aluminum and copper. Tests were conducted over an eighteen day machine running period …
Reading Comprehension Is Crucial But Not Critical, James W. Cunningham
Reading Comprehension Is Crucial But Not Critical, James W. Cunningham
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Reading and English teachers are often aware that many adults who dislike reading in general and literature in specific learned their dislike through being required to memorize and parrot the teacher's interpretation and evaluation of pieces of writing. Countless articles and books have reported this phenomenon and called on teachers to foster democratic principles by encouraging individual responses and divergent thinking in their classes. These same teachers, however, see many of their students unwilling or unable to offer any response to what they have read. The resulting dilemma requires that teachers either make negative value judgments about the thinking of …
Adaptations Of Manzo's Guided Reading Procedure, Dixie Lee Spiegel
Adaptations Of Manzo's Guided Reading Procedure, Dixie Lee Spiegel
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In 1975 Manzo described the Guided Reading Procedure, which was designed to "improve reading comprehension by stressing attitudinal factors- accuracy in comprehension, self-correction, and awareness of implicit questions, as well as cognitive factors, unaided recall and organizational skills" (pp. 291). As developed by Manzo, the Guided Reading Procedure (GRP) is to be used after the reading of a common selection. However, the GRP can easily be adapted as a pre-reading activity and as a post-reading activity when students have read different materials.
Can We Update Experienced Teachers' Beliefs And Practices In Reading?, Thomas W. Bean
Can We Update Experienced Teachers' Beliefs And Practices In Reading?, Thomas W. Bean
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
A recent review charting the impact of educational research on classroom teaching found that teaching practices, particularly in reading, were rarely modified to reflect current research findings (Clifford, 1973). Clifford chronicled the fragmentary, "one short" nature of much of the educational research produced and reported over the last fifty years. He suggested that a more unified body of cumulative research findings in a cohesive area of investigation might stand a better chance of influencing change in the classroom.
Teaching Methods Utilizing A Field Theory Viewpoint In The Elementary Reading Program, Shirley Lechuga, Heath Lowry
Teaching Methods Utilizing A Field Theory Viewpoint In The Elementary Reading Program, Shirley Lechuga, Heath Lowry
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The trend in reading instruction during the past few years, has strongly focused on the whole child, his individuality, his feelings, beliefs, and goals as well as his cognitive abilities. All of these constitute the child's life space and are the "parts of the whole" that teachers must deal with. Consistent with this learning theory, the teacher's role has changed. Teaching now consists of the promotion and enrichment of the interactive learning process between the child and his environment. The teaching environment of the reading program is most important to the young reader's success. The acceleration of the reading process …

The Effects Of Two Training Procedures On The Acquisition And Retention Of A Sight-Word Vocabulary In Remedial Readers, Marilyn Monteiro
Dissertations
A Trial and Error and an Errorless procedure were used to teach phonically-irregular words to remedial readers. Subjects were six elementary-school students enrolled in a tutorial program. The Errorless procedure consisted of the use of an echoic prime, prompting and cumulative review over words mastered while the Trial and Error procedure consisted of the use of corrections for errors. Five subjects both mastered and retained more words with the Errorless procedure. The average percent of words mastered across all subjects was greater for the Errorless procedure (73% versus 43%), as was the average percent of words mastered on the six-week …

Dissertations
Two experiments demonstrated that carefully programmed review tests can result in 90% mastery of course objectives. Introductory psychology students participated in two group comparisons of the effectiveness of review tests versus no review tests. Review tests were programmed in that difficult items were repeated on several review tests. In both studies, students taking review quizzes outperformed students not taking review quizzes on final examinations. In addition, students not taking review quizzes were more likely to drop the course.
