Toward A Full Employment Policy: An Overview, Alvin Kogut, Sylvia Aron
Toward A Full Employment Policy: An Overview, Alvin Kogut, Sylvia Aron
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Unlike more advanced welfare states, the U.S. has not committed itself to a full employment policy: the full dimensions of unemployment are not revealed and the "manpower" programs reflect a welfare philosophy. While constraints to such a commitment remain formidable, the developments around Humphrey-Hawkins may be a start.
A Study Of The Community Development Advisory Act Committee 1978-1979, Christopher W. Cottrell
A Study Of The Community Development Advisory Act Committee 1978-1979, Christopher W. Cottrell
Honors Theses
This paper will focus on the Community Development Act Advisory Committee, (CDAAC), for the year 1978-79. This Citizens Advisory Committee is required under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant, Entitlement Grant Program. The City of Kalamazoo, as an applicant for community development Block Grant funds, must have citizen input on how funds should be spent on the neighborhoods that qualify for assistance. This year there is about $2,323,563 which can be spent to improve the housing and community needs of what the city calls the six comprehensive Neighborhood Revitalization Areas or more commonly known …

The Lb Wind-Tunnel, Larry Bennett
Honors Theses
A small subsonic wind-tunnel has been developed for further understanding of aerodynamic principles. This tunnel is small enough to be used on table tops so the student can get first-hand experience. The tunnel's working section is a clear plexiglass tube for easy viewing and provides ample work room. The biggest advantage of this tunnel is that it can be built in the average home workshop for approximately $60.00.
Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood
Toward The Democratization Of The Social Policy Process, L. K. Northwood
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the nature of social policies and the public policymaking process. It is demonstrated that public social policies tend to accrue an aura or ideology of benevolence that is only partially warranted, and that may be quite misleading to policy analysts and citizenry. The major thrust of the paper is to consider the social policy process as a strategy for public decision-making. As such, properly organized, it can provide an alternative and complementary strategy to electoral politics and protest movements. To be effective as a strategy, three major barriers must be overcome: …

Political De-Moralization Of The Poor: Organizing Lower-Class Families Of The Mentally Retarded, Leonard Fontana
Political De-Moralization Of The Poor: Organizing Lower-Class Families Of The Mentally Retarded, Leonard Fontana
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper employs an analytic framework based on organizational incentives to explain the failure of recent welfare reform efforts. The data consists of observations, interviews, and routine inhouse reports collected on a federally funded program, Project STAR. The project was developed with the aim of mobilizing lower-class and minority families of the mentally retarded in support of reform of mental retardation services in five cities in the U.S. A service-inducement strategy was pursued by the reform organization to overcome the difficulties of enticing lower-class families of the retarded to participate in organizational activities. This strategy appears to have had several …

The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick
The United States And China: From Noncommunication To Diplomatic Relations, Mary Jeanne Patrick
Masters Theses
After more than two decades of fundamental differences due to lack of direct diplomatic relations, the People's Republic of China and the United States are developing a harmonious working relationship. Friendly relations between these two major nations began to improve in 1972 during President Richard Nixon's visit to China that had been arranged by Henry Kissinger, Assistant for National Security Affairs.
The purpose of this thesis is to show that nations can overcome their negative stereotyped images with one another when their leaders will enter into effective communication.
Chapter I considers the historical aspects of the Sino-American relationship.
Chapter II …
