A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Beginning Reading Tutorial Program Administered By Elementary Aides, Reginald T. Hosner Aug 1980

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Beginning Reading Tutorial Program Administered By Elementary Aides, Reginald T. Hosner

Masters Theses

This study illustrates that early elementary students who were lagging in basic reading skills learned at a faster-than-mainstream rate when taught by paraprofessional aides trained in administering the Beginning Reading tutorial program. After intensive training aides were shown to implement the tutorial program at a level considered to be above adequate. Mean gains made by tutored students in socially important (norm-referenced) reading skills were both statistically and educationally significant. A multiple-baseline analysis of program skill acquisition demonstrated that each program section implemented was effective in reaching its stated objectives. Control group pre-post-test comparisons of program skill acquisition further substantiate the …

Effects Of Thioridazine (Mellaril) On Titrating Delayed Matching To Sample Performance In Mentally Retarded Adults, Timothy Theodore Wysocki Aug 1980

Effects Of Thioridazine (Mellaril) On Titrating Delayed Matching To Sample Performance In Mentally Retarded Adults, Timothy Theodore Wysocki

Dissertations

Four mentally retarded adults participated twice daily in assessments of their performance of a titrating delayed matching to sample discrimination. Trials began with the center of three response panels illuminated by one of three colors. Depression of the center panel terminated the light on the center panel and, following a delay, resulted in the presentation of two comparison colors on the side panels. Pressing the side panel illuminated by the same color which had been presented on the center panel yielded a reinforcer, while incorrect responses produced a brief timeout. The delay between depression of the center response panel and …

Impact Of Federal Legislation On Coaches' Salaries For High School Athletic Teams, Frank Joseph Wisniewski

Dissertations

The study has three major purposes: (a) to focus on the issue of parity of coaches' salaries for male and female athletic teams, (b) to clarify the existence of supplemental salary schedule differences, and (c) to determine the criteria that are most important in describing differences in coaching salaries.

The study was conducted to seek: (a) information on salary schedule compensation for selected comparable male and female athletic teams during the 1974-1975 and 1979-1980 school years in Macomb County, Michigan public school districts, (b) information about differences in salaries between coaches of boys' and girls' athletic teams between those same …

An Analysis Of Teacher Morale And Absenteeism In A Declining Enrollment School District, Terry M. Booth

Dissertations

The major purposes of this 3-year ex post facto case study were to ascertain if a relationship exists between the rate of teacher absenteeism and program curtailments, necessitated by financial problems resulting from declining enrollments, and the morale of teachers. Specifically, this study analyzed the absence pattern of those teachers affected by building closings, academic reassignment, and notification of layoff, over a 3-year period, to determine their relationship to absenteeism.

The study was conducted in the East Detroit Public Schools, East Detroit, Michigan. The 476 full-time professional teachers employed during the 3 years of the study comprised the total sample …

Administrative Preparedness: Perceptions Of Problems And Qualifications, William Joseph Banach

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide information which will stimulate a forecasting of educational problems and encourage a review of administrative training programs.

The purpose of the study was operationalized through three objectives: (1) to determine whether incongruencies existed between qualifications administrators perceived themselves having and educational problems they identified; (2) to investigate whether administrators and the public perceived the same educational problems; and, (3) to determine if the training needs administrators expressed were related to the educational problems they identified.

The study focused on administrative perceptions of problems and qualifications for the periods 1978-79, 1979-80 and 1980-85. …

Teachers As Readers: An Extension Of The 'Impact Of Reading' Survey, Eugene H. Cramer, Camille L.Z. Blachowicz Jul 1980

Teachers As Readers: An Extension Of The 'Impact Of Reading' Survey, Eugene H. Cramer, Camille L.Z. Blachowicz

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Do teachers have a responsibility to help students to develop positive attitudes about reading? The idea that teachers can and should play a major role in the development of students' reading habits and interests has never been seriously questioned. In fact, most reading methods texts and many journal articles repeatedly stress this aspect of teachers' responsibilities. "Interests do not grow in a vacuum ... the teacher's task, then, is not only to feed the interests the child already possesses but to open up new avenues of interest and opportunity" (Strickland, 1957). "Developing permanent interests in reading must be the goal …

Suggestions For Improving The Language Development Of Disabled Secondary Readers, Nancy A. Mavrogenes Jul 1980

Suggestions For Improving The Language Development Of Disabled Secondary Readers, Nancy A. Mavrogenes

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As high school teachers of reading and English know, some students in their classrooms are poor in all areas of language. They read on a fourth-grade level; they write and spell so as to obscure most communication; they speak in simple sentences; their listening ability is so low that they can't seem to follow most directions. What can we do to fill in the innumerable gaps in all these areas? It is the purpose of this article to present two ways to improve a student's level of language development: 1) daily exposure to good literature in the original (not adapted …

A Self-Appraisal Inventory For Reading Teachers, Linda Mixon Clary Jul 1980

A Self-Appraisal Inventory For Reading Teachers, Linda Mixon Clary

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

After teaching my first year in a sixth grade class, where the reading levels ranged from 2 to 12, I realized that I needed to know more about teaching reading. I went back to school and learned a lot more. Then, I worked with a federal project that functioned in about a dozen school districts, so I saw lots of teachers - some very good and some awful- and lots of children. I then taught some more myself and decided that kids never get to be better readers without good teachers. But, that meant more training for me. When I …

Non-Governmental Emergency Food Services: A Descriptive Study Of The Tertiary Welfare Sector, Stanley Wenocur Jul 1980

Non-Governmental Emergency Food Services: A Descriptive Study Of The Tertiary Welfare Sector, Stanley Wenocur

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper presents the findings of an exploratory study of voluntarily organized emergency food centers in Baltimore. These agencies comprise the heart of a tertiary welfare system that provides basic survival supplies without a means test to the needy who cannot obtain relief from traditional public or private sources. Forty-one emergency food services were identified in Baltimore and the heads of 37 of these agencies were interviewed in depth. The findings indicated that a large and heterogeneous population bad utilized emergency food agencies and that the agencies generally met the requisites for a true safety-net function - i.e., accessibility, non-bureaucratic …

Ecological Systems Theory In Social Work, Max Siporin Jul 1980

Ecological Systems Theory In Social Work, Max Siporin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Ecological systems theory is explicated as a current form of successive systems models used in social work. Behavior principles assumptive in this model are identified: of exchange balance, inner consistency, and dialectial change. Several misconceptions of ecological systems theory and a cultist aspect of its current popularity are addressed. Advantages, including the emergence of practice principles derived from this model, as well as its limitations are then discussed. The charge that systems theory helps maintain the status quo and the use of systems theory by radical proponents of system change are considered in terms of the dual function of social …

Jungian Theory And Social Work Practice, Herman Borenzweig Jul 1980

Jungian Theory And Social Work Practice, Herman Borenzweig

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Carl Jung's contributions to psychology, psychotherapy, and social science have had little impact upon social wonk practice. Social Work Abstracts to lists only one article where Jungian theory is utilized by social workers. McBroom has recently written an article "The Collective Unconscious as a Unifying Concept in Teaching Human Behavior Cross Culturally:" If only two articles about Jungian psychology have appeared in the social work literature in the last twelve years it seems safe to assume either that the ,Jungian oriented social workers practice their Jung underground and fail to publish on that Jung remains anathema to the profession.

Family Health Policy Formulation: A Problematic Definitional Process, H. Hugh Floyd Jr. Jul 1980

Family Health Policy Formulation: A Problematic Definitional Process, H. Hugh Floyd Jr.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The family has become a focus of much concern over the past two decades as a variety of family related problems have become major social issues. These social-psychological problems are considered to have negative consequences at three analytical levels: individual, family and society. Therefore, considerable discussion has been raised about the establishment of family policy. Family policy is discussed in this paper as a definitional problematic process. Several problems of a conceptual and logistical nature are cited and some guidelines for family policy construction are made.

Rural Sociology And Rural Social Work: An Historical Essay, Emilia E. Martinez-Brawley Jul 1980

Rural Sociology And Rural Social Work: An Historical Essay, Emilia E. Martinez-Brawley

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The relationship between rural sociology and rural social work can be traced back to the days of the Country Life Commission (1908), and has experienced many fluctuations throughout the years. This paper examines the interconnections between the developments in the two fields, drawing from historical data which lead to che hypothesis that those fluctuations were caused by forces within each discipline as well as by developments affecting the interactions of each field with the other. It appears that academic and theoretical issues were not alone in causing contention in the relationship between rural sociology and the practice of rural social …

Demographic And Attitudinal Factors Associated With Perceptions Of Social Work, Pat M. Keith Jul 1980

Demographic And Attitudinal Factors Associated With Perceptions Of Social Work, Pat M. Keith

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Demographic and attitudinal correlates of perceptions of social work practice were examined among rural and urban residents. Data obtained from 301 persons indicated that attitudes toward public assistance and knowledge about social work had independent effects on perceptions of social work practice. Sex and education also explained a significant amount of the variance in attitudes toward social work with women and persons with more education having more positive attitudes. One-third of the respondents had personal experience with social work however, when other variables were considered, previous association a social worker had no impact on attitudes. Dimensions of religiosity previously found …

Protecting Battered Wives: The Availability Of Legal Remedies, Paul J. Munson Jul 1980

Protecting Battered Wives: The Availability Of Legal Remedies, Paul J. Munson

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Abused wives have often times been victims of neglect by legal authorities due to the long-held belief that the criminal law system should not intrude into family problems. Unfortunately, this attitude ignores the seriousness and extent of spousal violence. This paper first examines traditional legal thought with regards to violence in the family. It is then argued that drafting new laws may help to protect the battered wife, but other considerations such as enforcement and community support must be addressed if law is to provide effective remedies. Remedies other than criminal ones, should be pursued exhaustively in the attempt to …

The Effects Of Fillers On The Deinkability Of Printed Paper, Jerry L. Martin Jun 1980

The Effects Of Fillers On The Deinkability Of Printed Paper, Jerry L. Martin

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

This report covers the effect of fillers on the deinkability of a printed sheet of paper. Paper was produced with varying amounts of titanium dioxide and clay retained as fillers. This paper was then cut into 8½ X 11 inch sheets. The top half of each sheet was printed and cut away from the bottom unprinted half. Both of these portions were repulped by identical methods and brightness measurements were made from this recycled pulp. Differences in these brightnesses were ploted against percent ash in the sheet. It was found that at low levels of addition the filler increases the …
