A Comparison Of Similar Versus Dissimilar Competing Response Practice In The Treatment Of Muscle Tics, Ellen L. Sharenow
A Comparison Of Similar Versus Dissimilar Competing Response Practice In The Treatment Of Muscle Tics, Ellen L. Sharenow
Masters Theses
Miltenberger, Fuqua, and McKinley (1985) reported that the competing response component of the habit reversal treatment package (Azrin & Nunn, 1973) when presented alone was as effective as the entire habit reversal procedure in suppressing muscle tics. In a related study, Miltenberger and Fuqua (1 9 8 5 , in press) reported that the performance of the competing response contingent on the occurrence of a variety of nervous habits resulted in greater response suppression than the non-contingent performance of the competing response. In an effort to determine whether the topography of the competing response was important to the reported effects, …
The Effect Of Task Responsibilities On Assistant Principals' Roles, Sandra B. Sirotti
The Effect Of Task Responsibilities On Assistant Principals' Roles, Sandra B. Sirotti
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that increased responsibilities had on the assistant principal's role. Because of increased responsibilities, it was believed that the assistant principals had been forced to become more task and less person oriented as a result of inadequate time to deal with both tasks and people. The study was designed to ascertain whether there had been growth in task responsibilities and, if so, whether the growth had caused the role to become more task than person oriented.
The sample consisted of 400 Michigan assistant principals. From this sample, 67% of the administrators …

Direct Memory Acquisition Of Fast Analog Signals, Syed Javaid Iqbal
Direct Memory Acquisition Of Fast Analog Signals, Syed Javaid Iqbal
Masters Theses
A fast data transfer computer circuit is developed using the direct memory acquisition (DMAC) technique. For this purpose Z-80 microcomputer ·chips, manufactured by Ziolog, were used. The direct memory acquisition circuitry was developed in several stages and required both hardware and software development. An erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) programmer was built for reading and loading the system program. The design, construction, and testing of the DMAC system are discussed in detail and an example of the use of this system for collecting data is given.
The Use Of Electrical Resistivity To Delineate A Brine Contamination Plume In The Walker Oilfield, Kent County, Michigan, Kent E. Meisel
The Use Of Electrical Resistivity To Delineate A Brine Contamination Plume In The Walker Oilfield, Kent County, Michigan, Kent E. Meisel
Masters Theses
Contamination of groundwater with oil field brines was reported in the Walker Oil Field, Michigan. An electrical resistivity survey utilizing the Vertical Electrical Sounding method was conducted to test the method as an exploratory tool for delineating brine contamination in glacial deposits. The method was successful in defining the subsurface geology and delineating a shallow, confined aquifer, but the presence of extensive, conductive clays effectively masked the presence of brine contamination. The method was shown to be an effective exploratory tool for shallow investigations.
The Depo-Provera Controversy: A Sociological Analysis, Pamela A. Hayman
The Depo-Provera Controversy: A Sociological Analysis, Pamela A. Hayman
Masters Theses
This study is a sociological analysis of the Depo- Provera Controversy. The strong programme in the sociology of science was the method employed for examining the social and political dimensions of the decision-making process underlying science and technology as it relates to the approval of Depo-Provera as a contraceptive in the United States. The data were consistent with the social constructionist perspective, rather than the positivistic view of science. In almost every instance, scientific conclusions followed alignment rather than arising from objective, universalistic analysis. Upjohn scientists and family planners concluded that Depo-Provera was safe and advocated its use; feminists and …
The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression And Rhythmic Competency: A Correlational Study, Michael J. Migliore
The Hamilton Rating Scale For Depression And Rhythmic Competency: A Correlational Study, Michael J. Migliore
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a relationship between a test of rhythmic competency and the psychomotor retardation subtest of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Twenty-six endogenously depressed inpatient adults participated in a medication-free pretest. Posttests were administered When a) values reached therapeutic blood levels and b) subjects were clinically observed to have improved. Results demonstrated modest correlations between the Hamilton scale and several subtests of the Rhythmic Competency measure; however, based on this study, the Rhythmic Competency Test could not be recommended as an indicator of psychomotor retardation.

Observations Of A Reading Specialist, Gary Kay
Observations Of A Reading Specialist, Gary Kay
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In 1983 the Florida legislature made a critical decision concerning the improvement of reading in the secondary schools. It provided funds for the creation of a new position, the reading resource specialist. Each high school was allowed one, whose specific areas of responsibility included the following: a) contributing the expertise needed to prepare the schools total reading program, b) working with the schools curriculum person in planning and implementing the basic skills remediation program as determined by the Florida State Assessment Accountability Act of 1976, c) providing individual diagonstic testing to enable better prescriptive approaches for classroom instruction, d) assisting …

A Disabled Student? In My Classroom?, Carol Ann Moore
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The Act, P.L. 94-142, The Education of All Handicapped Children, calls for education of exceptional children in the least restrictive environment, often the regular classroom. Integration of the disabled into the classroom ends the physical isolation, rejection, and segregation of the special classes era. But total integration of the non-disabled and the disabled cannot occur without increased educational attitudinal changes toward the disabled. These changes involve awareness by teachers and non-disabled peers of the unique needs and abilities of the disabled, acceptance of them, and abandonment of prejudicial ideas about the disabled.

Humanistic Criminology: Roots From Peter Kropotkin, Larry L. Tifft, Lois E. Stevenson
Humanistic Criminology: Roots From Peter Kropotkin, Larry L. Tifft, Lois E. Stevenson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Kropotkin's extensive writings on criminological issues have been almost totally neglected. Through critical historical and macro-structural analyses Kropotkin assessed institutional arrangements disclosing how they were or were not meeting human needs. Our exploration focuses on Kropotkin's theoretical contributions, his feelings-based criminology and his extremely insightful dualistic conceptualization of "human nature". His contributions to penology, and his assessment of social arrangements which would meet the complex and ever-changing needs of humankind are briefly examined. Kropotkin's analytic framework provides an insightful and provocative base from which to synthesize criminological thought and research and from which to take action to alter social arrangements …

A Study Of The Relationship Between High School Graduation Requirements And Student A.C.T. Assessment Scores In Public High Schools In The State Of Michigan, William M. Pritchard
Dissertations
The literature has pointed toward changes in high school curriculum as a contributor to the decline of standardized test scores during the 1960's and 1970's. During the past few years, many schools have increased graduation requirements in various subject areas in an effort to increase learning on the part of students. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the number of years of required study in various subject areas on student achievement.
The population that was studied included all public high schools in the State of Michigan. Two hundred thirty-eight schools were sampled from the population, …

An Investigation Into The Effects Of Learner Control Options On Patterns Of Learning Strategies, Debra Small Nelson
Dissertations
A body of literature termed learner control research examined the efficacy of allowing learners' control over the type, rate, amount, and sequence of content to be covered in an instructional program. The growing impact of computer based education has enhanced the possibility of providing learners greater autonomy in the learning process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of providing learner control options in a computer-assisted instruction (CAI) microcomputer program on patterns of learning strategies and content mastery.
The sample consisted of 98 adult learners involved in the fields of general or special education in the State …
Diagnosis Of Dyslexia: The Utility Of The Boder Test Of Reading-Spelling Patterns, A Representative Case Study Approach, Donna Montei
Diagnosis Of Dyslexia: The Utility Of The Boder Test Of Reading-Spelling Patterns, A Representative Case Study Approach, Donna Montei
Dissertations
The first purpose of the dissertation was to study the relationship between Boder test diagnosis (dysphonetic dyslexia) and hemisphere arousal with a representative subject. The relationship between standard methods of diagnosis and Boder diagnosis was studied with five additional subjects. The "dysphonetic" subject was measured with electroencephalogram biofeedback equipment and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and demonstrated higher arousal in the left hemisphere than the right hemisphere. Four of the five other subjects were diagnosed differently by the Boder test from diagnoses obtained through standard psychological test batteries. The results suggest that the Boder typology constructs may be …
Speaking Rate Effects On Language Comprehension By Autistic Children, Cheryl Ann Lehr
Speaking Rate Effects On Language Comprehension By Autistic Children, Cheryl Ann Lehr
Masters Theses
This was a study of language comprehension abilities of autistic children who were between 6 and 12 years of age. The 22 subjects were assigned to either a middle functioning (N=14) or high functioning (N=8) group, based primarily on I.Q. scores. The subjects in the two groups each heard four sets of ten sentences divided into two levels of difficulty at four, electronically controlled speaking rates (McCroskey, 1984).
Results of multifactor ANOVA (Winer, 1971) showed language comprehension to be affected by functioning group, sentence difficulty and interactions of sentence difficulty with speaking rate. Speaking rate had an effect on language …

Differences In Typology Among Nurses At Different Levels Of Management In Acute Care Institutions As Measured By The Mbti, Catherine Marie Devet
Dissertations
This survey research study explored differences in personality types between staff nurses and nurse managers in acute care institutions (hospitals). The study tested a theory about expected differences which was based on an extensive literature review of nursing administration and type theory as developed by Jung and measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
Eight acute care institutions were selected randomly from hospitals listed by the American Hospital Association (1983) as having 400-600 beds and located in the state of Michigan but outside of Wayne County. Of the eight hospitals approached, permission to conduct the study was obtained in five. …
