CASE HISTORY: The patient is a 15-year-old male who presented with left hip pain of approximately 2 weeks in duration. The patient reported that the pain worsened with hip movement. He also described intermittent popping in the hip and pain radiating to the lateral thigh. The pain began before he fell and struck his hip 3 days ago. Despite using ibuprofen and Tylenol, the pain persisted with minimal relief. PHYSICAL EXAM: The patient appeared well-developed and well-nourished with no apparent distress. Age-related decline in cognition is a well-documented phenomenon characterized by marked reductions in working and episodic memory. Memory athletes are individuals competing in a variety of memory sports. They exhibit exceptional and remarkable recall and cognitive performance. In spite of the extraordinary cognitive prowess exhibited by memory athletes, there is very little information available regarding the effects of aging on memory performance in this unique group. The Volumental 3D scanner aims to improve traditional measurement methods by providing a 3D model with six different foot measures. Foot measures using the scanner have been collected to analyze the variability in foot dimensions among a North American sample (Jurca, 2019) as well as how shoe sizes differ from brand to brand (Jurca, 2021). Skeletal muscle injuries account for the majority of sports related trauma. However, skeletal muscle has a unique quality in its’ innate ability to repair and regenerate. PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to detail the regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle through analysis of lipid mediator (LM) signaling in the circulation. Running with a stroller can be an appealing exercise mode for parents. However, pushing a stroller can increase the metabolic demand of running, especially uphill, potentially making it less tolerable and sustainable. PURPOSE: Determine the effects of two uphill stroller pushing techniques on the oxygen cost of running. METHODS: Eight runners (5 male, 3 female) were tested utilizing a forward (FWD) and downward (DWN) stroller pushing technique while running uphill. Cohesion bridges psychological and tactical aspects of how teams are structured and operate, significantly influencing both individual and team performance. Research has highlighted its particularly strong impact on women’s athletic success. Studies also show that women tend to prioritize social harmony, resolve conflicts collaboratively, and rely more on interpersonal relationships for team cohesion. While task-related cohesion (e.g., achieving performance goals) is often stable in elite athletes, social cohesion remains a malleable area for intervention. Mental toughness (MT), a trainable personal capacity, is theorized to enhance performance consistency under stress. Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries commonly occur during the early deceleration phase of one-leg landing. While the risk of ACL injury increases with concurrent cognitive demands such as attention, reaction time or inhibitory control, only a few studies have investigated the association between cognitive function and unplanned landing mechanics under the jump-and-land movement paradigm. Feedback is an essential component of an athlete’s performance and much research has explored the effect that various forms of feedback have on skill acquisition. For novices, there is speculation on what type of feedback would be more beneficial, especially regarding accuracy. Long-duration spaceflight can elicit increases in muscle disuse, thereby leading to a decrease in muscle mass. The consequences of these negative effects include decreases in muscle strength and mobility, and an increase in injury risk. CASE HISTORY: A 49-year-old male and a 41-year-old female with a seven-year history of infertility presented to Urology. Despite a successful IVF in 2021, natural conception remained elusive. The male reported fatigue, lethargy, low libido, and unexplained weight gain. A prior scrotal ultrasound detected bilateral varicocele with reverse flow. Given the extensive shoulder movements in athletes who perform overhead movements, it was anticipated that these athletes would present with stronger shoulders that could achieve a greater range of motion. PURPOSE: This study examined shoulder range of motion (ROM) and isometric strength in internal (IR) and external (ER) rotation in overhead (OH) and non-overhead (NO) athletes. METHODS: Twelve OH female athletes (19.9±0.9 yr, 174.4±6.4cm, 68.1±9.6 kg) and 10 NO female athletes (20±0.9 yr,167.4±6.3 cm, 64.9±10.4 kg) participated from an NCAA Division 3 school. Technology for apps that track health is becoming more popular, and many of these apps have not been examined for reliability. PURPOSE: to assess reliability of a commercially available body scanning app for body composition. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (age= 25.9±9.1 years, height= 165.5±10.9 cm, weight= 79.0±20.6 kg) had body composition measured using the MeThreeSixty app two times between three and seven days apart. High-Intensity Functional Training (HIFT), such as CrossFit®, integrates high-intensity, multi-joint movements and has been associated with cognitive enhancement. However, the acute effects of HIFT on inhibitory control in trained individuals remain unstudied. PURPOSE: To examine the acute effects of a single bout of HIFT exercise on inhibitory control in healthy young adults with at least six months of CrossFit training experience. CASE HISTORY: The patient was a 21-year old right-handed collegiate female volleyball player who presented with chronic shoulder pain in her dominant shoulder, which began approximately five years ago. Her previous assessment and treatment included x-rays and MRI imaging, several joint injections, and daily rehabilitation in an attempt to manage her symptoms. Unfortunately, her shoulder problems persisted. Four years after the onset of her pain, she underwent surgery as it was deemed necessary, due to her consistent pain and functional limitations. Consumers are increasingly seeking technology to help track health improvements. This study focuses on a free app that using 3D body scanning to assess anthropometric measures. PURPOSE: to evaluate the validity of a free app for measuring body anthropometrics compared to criterion measures. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (age= 25.9±9.1 years, height= 165.5±10.9 cm, weight= 79.0±20.6 kg) had chest, biceps, forearm, waist, abdomen, hip, thigh, and calf circumferences measured with a flexible measuring tape, and then by the MeThreeSixty app. Dependent (paired) t-tests were used to assess differences between actual and app measures. Inspiratory muscle exercise and slow breathing have been demonstrated to improve blood pressure control, possibly via an improved sympatho/vagal balance mechanism. Purpose: To test the hypothesis that inter-set inspiratory muscle exercise would attenuate the increase of sympatho/vagal activity ratio and the reduction of baroreflex sensitivity after high-intensity resistance exercise. Although dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is widely used to assess bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition in athletes, no ballet-specific DEXA injury risk thresholds exist. Aging is associated with declines in functional fitness and cognitive function, which may impact the quality of life in older adults. Developing a safe and active training program as an initial strategy is critical for the elderly population to maintain physical and mental well-being.
