Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a rehabilitation technique for individuals with physical function limitations and mobility impairments, however, the potential for NMES to improve metabolic health is unclear. PURPOSE: To evaluate the acute and long-term effects of NMES on blood glucose and substrate utilization. METHODS: The study recruited forty-five sedentary overweight/obese participants (Age: 40 ± 13 years; BMI: 37 ± 7 kg/m2) with hyperglycemia (fasting glucose ≥ 100 mg/dL or 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) value ≥ 140 mg/dL). While numerous methods for assessing body fat percentage have been validated, it is important to understand that using results from one modality does not guarantee the same on another. It is also important, when weighing the pros and cons of each modality, that the reliability of each approach should also be taken into consideration. Type 2 diabetes is a multifaceted condition characterized by disruptions in insulin sensitivity, insulin secretion, and associated metabolic defects such as impaired glucose and lipid metabolism and metabolic inflexibility. The Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) screens for impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes. While a high overall glucose surge during a 3 hour OGTT indicates glucose intolerance, the glucose peak time offers valuable insights into metabolic health. PURPOSE: This study examines whether glucose peak time during an OGTT is indicative of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. The video game industry is extremely successful, with its annual revenue surpassing the film and music industries combined. Globally, nearly 3 billion people play video games (VGs) with most being adult casual video game players (VGPs). Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems offer real-time glucose insights but are limited by temporal lags and variability compared to capillary blood glucose (CBG) and venous blood measurements. Older adults typically consume 10 to 25% more metabolic energy than young adults while walking (decreased walking economy). The age-related decline in walking economy relates to impaired quality of life and is important to mitigate (or reverse). Yet, it is unestablished which factor(s) govern the age-related decline in the walking economy. Caffeine is one of the most widely used drugs among athletes seeking an advantage over opponents. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on velocity and accuracy for baseball pitchers. METHODS: Subjects consisted of 20 pitchers from the Texas Lutheran Baseball team. After a warmup, participants threw 10 fastballs. A radar gun that measured miles per hour was used to determine velocity. Only the 5 fastest pitches were used in the data calculations. Strikes and balls were also calculated to determine accuracy. Individuals born preterm have significantly impaired adaptability in maximal aerobic capacity (VO2 max) with exercise training. We have hypothesized that this impaired response is linked to immature mitochondrial development and maladaptation resulting from early birth. PURPOSE: This project is multifaceted with the overarching aim to measure mitochondrial respiration in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and assess for potential mitochondrial genome variants and heteroplasmy that may explain poor adaptability in VO2 max with training.
