Relationship Between Cerebral Pulsatility Index And Vasodilatory Responsiveness To A Hypercapnic Challenge, Hannah E. Nagib, John Kolade, James E. Brown, Sajjad S. Moradi, R Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cerebral vascular function/health is critical for the precise matching of cerebral blood flow and thus oxygen/substrate delivery and the metabolic demands of the brain. Cerebral pulsatility index (PI) reflects cerebral vascular resistance and compliance, and therefore provides a measure of cerebral vascular stiffness. A higher PI indicates augmented stiffness and is associated with risk for/prevalence of advanced atherosclerosis and poor cerebral vascular autoregulation, both of which can predispose individuals to various detrimental conditions including stroke and reduced neurocognitive function. Cerebral vascular function/health is also often assessed by the vasodilatory response to a hypercapnic stimuli with higher responses being associated with …

Comparison Of Lactate Response To Perceived Stress Between Sedentary Individuals & Advanced Endurance Athletes, Lily Thompson, Brett Crossland
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Lactate is an acid produced as a byproduct of anaerobic glycolysis, and is used as an energy source for metabolism in the oxidative system. Initially classified as a waste product of cellular metabolism and a primary source of fatigue during exercise, lactate has recently been shown to play a large role in a number of vital physiological processes. Clinically, lactate has now been shown to interact with autonomic nervous system (ANS), and may be a valuable measure in diagnosing severity of disease. Currently, no research has been conducted examining the relationship between resting blood lactate (BL) and ANS activity relating …

Cerebral Vascular Response During A Hypercapnic Challenge With And Without Simultaneous Activation Of The Sympathetic Nervous System, Sajjad Moradi, James E. Brown, John Kolade, Hannah E. Nagib, R Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cerebral vascular function/health is crucial for the maintenance of neurocognitive function and prevention of various neurocognitive and cerebral vascular conditions/diseases. Cerebral vascular function is commonly assessed by evaluating the vasodilatory response to a hypercapnic stimuli. A larger vasodilatory response is associated with more positive outcomes, while a blunted response is associated with an increased risk of cerebral vascular and neurocognitive diseases in the future. However, it remains unclear whether simultaneous activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) can attenuate cerebral vasodilation during a hypercapnic challenge. PURPOSE: Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that cerebral vascular vasodilatory responsiveness to a …

Racial Impacts Of Cerebral Vascular Responsiveness To Sympathetic Nervous System Activation, James E. Brown, Ario S. Moradi, Hannah Nagib, John Kolade, R. Matthew Brothers
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Racial disparities have been observed in the vasoconstrictor response of peripheral arteries in skeletal muscle circulation following activation of the sympathetic nervous system (i.e., sympathetic vascular transduction). Specifically, non-Hispanic Black (BNH) individuals exhibit an enhanced vasoconstrictor response compared to non-Hispanic White (WNH) individuals. These differences may contribute to the higher incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular events observed in BNH populations. Additionally, BNH individuals face an increased risk and prevalence of various cerebrovascular and neurocognitive disorders. However, it remains unclear whether the heightened skeletal muscle vascular transduction response extends to the cerebral circulation. The Cold Pressor Test (CPT), a common method …

Isometric Belt Squat Knee Position Affects Mediolateral Kinetics, Arianna N. Eyre, Madison Treece, J Bryan Mann, Jennifer M. Yentes
Isometric Belt Squat Knee Position Affects Mediolateral Kinetics, Arianna N. Eyre, Madison Treece, J Bryan Mann, Jennifer M. Yentes
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The isometric belt squat has grown in popularity as a lower body strength assessment, given its reduction in spinal loading and limited involvement of the upper extremity compared to other whole-body isometric test variations. Previous research has identified knee angle ranges for the isometric belt squat that are more advantageous for vertical force generation. The relationship of knee angle and anteroposterior and mediolateral forces has not been established for the isometric belt squat. Since ground reaction force is three-dimensional, examination into anteroposterior and mediolateral forces will provide additional information on how force is developed for this movement as well as …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Mental stress superimposed on prolonged sitting is a common encounter. Both conditions are known to induce vascular dysfunction and impair executive function. While physical activity during sitting can mitigate these adverse effects, such activity is not always permissible for college students studying for important exams and office workers approaching critical deadlines. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) of the lower limb muscles has been proposed as a potential alternative to voluntary exercise and might help preserve vascular and cognitive function under these conditions. PURPOSE: This pilot study investigated whether EMS could attenuate arterial stiffening and cognitive decline induced by combined prolonged …
