The Effect Of Moderate Intensity Aerobic Exercise On Affect And Exercise Intention In Active And Inactive College Students, Allison M. Kyral, Amber M. Shipherd, Christopher M. Hearon
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(5): 1070-1079, 2019. Physical activity has long been established as an essential behavior for vital physical and psychosocial health outcomes (16, 18), but lack of physical activity is still a rampant problem worldwide (7). Numerous factors influence physical activity participation, including affect, a measure of well-being. Research has found that affect increases following an exercise session, though some recent studies have discovered that affect tends to be lower when measured during exercise (14). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the differences in affect between active and inactive college students during exercise. A …

Effects Of Short-Term High Versus Continuous Moderate Intensity Training On Insulin Resistance In Overweight And Obese Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Tshidi Thaane, Ayesha Motala, Andrew Mckune
Effects Of Short-Term High Versus Continuous Moderate Intensity Training On Insulin Resistance In Overweight And Obese Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Tshidi Thaane, Ayesha Motala, Andrew Mckune
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(3): 1057-1069, 2019. In long-term exercise training studies ( > 6 weeks), improvements in insulin resistance (IR) are amplified by decreased body fat and/or increased cardio-respiratory fitness. This presents a challenge in studying the independent effects of exercise training. Our study purpose was to determine the effects of short-term continuous moderate intensity training (CMIT) and high intensity interval training (HIIT) on IR in overweight/obese adults. Participants were stratified into insulin sensitive (IS) and IR groups, and randomized into non-exercise control (CNT), CMIT and HIIT sub-groups that underwent baseline and post testing. Exercise sessions were 18-24 minutes …

Acute Effects Of A Multi-Ingredient Pre-Workout Supplement On 5-Km Running Performance In Recreationally-Trained Athletes, Daniel J. Lutsch, Clayton L. Camic, Andrew R. Jagim, Nora J. Johnston, Taylor L. Musgjerd
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 1045-1056, 2019. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of an acute dose of a multi-ingredient pre-workout supplement on 5-km running performance and subjective measures of fatigue. Twenty aerobically-trained, males (n= 10, mean ± SD = 80.8 ± 6.1 kg) and females (n= 10, 64.5 ± 6.6 kg) completed two 5-km running races for time in a double-blind, cross-over fashion. During the first session, subjects were randomly assigned to ingest the supplement or placebo 30 minutes prior to running a 5-km race. The supplement contained multiple …

Effects Of Aerobic Exercise Modality On Cognition And Fitness In Breast Cancer Survivors, Julie A. Larsen, Judy Knuth
Effects Of Aerobic Exercise Modality On Cognition And Fitness In Breast Cancer Survivors, Julie A. Larsen, Judy Knuth
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(3): 1023-1033, 2019. Although cognitive dysfunction is a common occurrence among breast cancer survivors, there is no widely recognized intervention for this debilitating condition. The purpose of this study was to determine whether floor/step aerobics (FSA) and/or treadmill walking (TMW) interventions can improve outcomes when compared to standard care (STC). Recent breast cancer survivors participated in 12 weeks of FSA (n=8), TMW (n=7), or STC (n=10) with pre/post assessments of cognition and fitness. Interaction effects between group and time were assessed with repeated measures ANOVA. Throughout the extent of …

The Relationship Between Lower-Body Strength And Power, And Load Carriage Tasks: A Critical Review, Robin Marc Orr, J. Jay Dawes, Robert G. Lockie, Daniel Godeassi
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(6): 1001-1022, 2019. The purpose of this review was to critically appraise articles that have investigated the association between lower-body strength and power during load carriage in tactical personnel. Literature databases were searched with specific search terms, yielding 921 articles. Additional studies found from article reference lists were also assessed for eligibility. Out of these articles, 16 met the inclusion/exclusion criteria and were critically appraised. Articles were assessed by the Downs and Black evaluation tool with inter-rater agreement determined by Cohen’s kappa and final results graded according to the Kennelly quality grading system. Of the …

Prevalence Of Disordered Eating And Muscle Dysmorphia In College Students By Predominant Exercise Type, Taylor E. Lechner, Emily M. Gill, Madeleine J. Drees, Carrie M. Hamady, Mary-Jon Ludy
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1001-1012, 2019. Many young adults experience distorted body image and decreased body satisfaction. To attain more “ideal” bodies, negative alterations in eating and/or exercise habits are common. This study’s objective was to compare disordered eating and muscle dysmorphia in undergraduates who participate in aerobic-, anaerobic-, or flexibility-predominant exercise; mixed exercise; or no exercise. One hundred twelve undergraduate students (age 21.2 ± 4.8 years; BMI 25.0 ± 4.6 kg/m2) were recruited from the student union and recreation center. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI), and demographic/exercise questions were administered …
