Does Fatigue Impact Static And Dynamic Balance Variables In Athletes With Previously Ankle Injury?, Michelle Lacey, Bernard Donne
Does Fatigue Impact Static And Dynamic Balance Variables In Athletes With Previously Ankle Injury?, Michelle Lacey, Bernard Donne
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(3): 1121-1137, 2019. Ankle injury, resulting in deficits in static and dynamic balance, can result in significant time loss to sport, affect daily activities and potentially place athletes at greater risk of re-injury. In order to identify athletes at risk of ankle injury accurate and reliable balance assessment tools are required. The purpose of the current study was to quantify reliability of static and dynamic balance variables in currently healthy, previously injured, athletes (n = 19) and assess the impact of an intense intermittent zig-zag running protocol to volitional exhaustion, rated by RPE, on balance …

The Effect Of Barefoot Running On Emg Activity In The Gastrocnemius And Tibialis Anterior In Active College-Aged Females, Ryan Beierle, Phoebe Burton, Hayden Smith, Michael Smith, Stephen J. Ives
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(1): 1110-1120, 2019. Running is one of the most popular forms of exercise, thus overuse injuries such as plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and tibial stress fractures are also common. Barefoot/forefoot running has shown promise to reduce overuse injuries by decreasing the impact upon contact with the ground. The arch of the foot utilizes a ‘spring’ system that simultaneously reduces impact and propels the stride forward. Increased muscle activity in a particular location is indicative of greater impact forces, suggesting a larger risk for overuse injuries. The current study investigated the role of the barefoot condition …

Early Timeline Of Lean Tissue Mass And Strength Improvements In Trained Men Following A High Volume/Frequency Resistance Training Program, Michael H. Thomas, Robert H. Ferguson, Steve P. Burns, Natalie B. Allen
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1094-1109, 2019. The purpose of this study was to determine the early timeline effect of a systemic high volume/frequency resistance training intervention on lean tissue mass and strength in trained men. Twenty-two healthy resistance trained men, age (32.29 ± 9.75 years), training age (9.40 ± 6.18 years) were placed on a 4-week resistance training (RT) intervention with lean mass and strength assessed pre, mid, and post intervention. RT consisted of 6 exercises: flat smith chest press, pull ups, triceps pushdowns, dumbbell bicep curls, leg press or walking lunges, and standing calf raises, completing 5 …

Comparison Of Body Composition Prediction Equations With Air Displacement Plethysmography In Overweight And Obese Caucasian Males., Carley A. Shannon, Justin R. Brown, Andrew T. Del Pozzi
International Journal of Exercise Science
Body mass index (BMI) has been used for years by clinicians to approximate total body fat. However, the body adiposity index (BAI), body adiposity index from the FELS longitudinal study (BAIFELS), and an equation developed by Deurenberg et al. (BFD) were created recently to offset BMI’s limitations and accurately estimate percent body fat (%BF). The prevalence of overweight and obese Caucasian men is increasing in the United States; currently, there is no established way to quickly and accurately predict their %BF. Purpose: To compare the existing %BF equations (BAI, BAIFELS, and BFD) to measured %BF via air displacement plethysmography (ADP) …

Can Blood Flow Restricted Exercise Improve Ham:Quad Ratios Better Than Traditional Training?, Michael G. Bemben, Kirsten M. Mitcheltree, Rebecca D. Larson, David Ross, Charity Cavazos, Benjamin Friedlander, Debra A. Bemben
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 12(4): 1080-1093, 2019. Muscular deficiencies between the quadriceps and hamstrings are prevalent among women and often lead to knee injury and ACL tears. The purpose of this study was to examine whether short term resistance training with or without blood flow restriction (BFR) could improve hamstring:quadricep ratios (H:Q) and reduce the chance for injury. Women (n = 14; 18-25 yrs) were randomly assigned to either a traditional resistance training (RT: n = 8) or BFR resistance training in combination with traditional RT (RT+BFR: n = 6) group. Subjects trained 3 days/week for 6 weeks. …
