Student Transition At A Residential Stem School, Olivia Kaitlin Gatten
Student Transition At A Residential Stem School, Olivia Kaitlin Gatten
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The goal of this qualitative study was to gain insight into which personal factors most affect student adjustment in a state residential STEM school. Factors from Tinto’s Model of Institutional Departure were used as the framework to capture the transition of gifted high school students from traditional high school to The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky, a statewide residential STEM school. Tinto’s Model predicts college persistence using pre-existing individual characteristics and institutional experiences. These qualities and experiences were used to form questions about student traits and transition. Questionnaires were administered to Gatton Academy first-year students, …
Fused Arene-Based Molecular Systems As Additives For Organic Photovoltaics, Rachana Neesu
Fused Arene-Based Molecular Systems As Additives For Organic Photovoltaics, Rachana Neesu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are mainly based on organic semiconducting small molecules, macromolecules, and polymers, which form an active layer in photovoltaics. They act as an active material in absorbing light and causing charge mobility to generate electricity from sunlight. This thesis describes the molecular systems derived from fused arenes such as anthracene, pyrene, carbazole and thiophene for use as either a donor or an acceptor component of the active layer of OPVs. Two novel molecular systems (9- anthracenecarboxy-1-methylpyrene, (1) and Py-bi-TH-ANT, (2) were prepared using Steglich esterification and Grignard metathesis followed by Kumada coupling. The molecular structure of each was …

Physical Activity As A Contributing Factor To Engagement In Self-Harm Behaviors Among Youth, Shannon Danielle Boone
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study explored the potential for physical activity to be an effective, healthy coping strategy alternative to self-harm behaviors. Regression analyses were performed to assess how physical activity level related to risk factors (i.e., emotional dysregulation, self-esteem, and depression) and self-harm behaviors. The relationship between selfharm and exercise motivations was also examined. Participants were recruited from two high schools (n = 95) and one university (n = 72) in the southeastern region of the United States. Analyses were run using the following measures from a survey packet: adapted Exercise Questionnaire (Helmerhorst, Brage, Warren, Besson, & Ekelund, 2012), Exercise Motivations Inventory—Second …
A Study On The Micro Electro-Discharge Machining Of Aerospace Materials, Mychal-Drew Moses
A Study On The Micro Electro-Discharge Machining Of Aerospace Materials, Mychal-Drew Moses
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a non-traditional machining process that uses hundreds of thousands of minute electrical sparks per second to machine any electrically conductive material, no matter the hardness or how delicate it is. EDM allows a much greater range of design possibilities, unconstrained from the traditional machining processes, in which material is removed mechanically by either rotating the cutting tool or the work piece. Shapes that were impossible to machine by any other method, such as deep, precision, square holes and slots with sharp inside corners, are readily produced. It provides accurate geometries in high- aspect ratio holes …

A Review Of Court Cases Involving Discrimination In Physical Ability Testing: 1992-2015, Casey L. Biggs
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Organizations that employ physically demanding jobs want to ensure their selection procedures distinguish qualified applicants from unqualified applicants. However, such selection tools typically result in adverse impact against various protected groups and often lead to litigation. Various factors influence the court’s decision to rule in favor of the plaintiff or the defendant. The purpose of the present study is to identify those factors. The ADA (1990) created strict guidelines for plaintiffs and defendants to follow to be credible in a discrimination case. This study will specifically determine the impact of the ADA guidelines and three additional factors that influence court …
Can Quantitative Assessment Of Moral Identity Be Improved?, David Adrion Baker
Can Quantitative Assessment Of Moral Identity Be Improved?, David Adrion Baker
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
According to results from Aquino and Reed (study 5, 2002) and Hall and Derryberry (2010), high means and very low standard deviations of the average score for each question for both the internalization and symbolization scales of the Moral Identity Scale (MIS) are common. This study attempts to measure the extent to which a person considers morality to be a central part of his or her self-concept. Because participants may feel pressure to respond in a certain way on the MIS, the role of social desirability to respond favorably is very plausible. The current study, therefore, attempts to reduce socially …
Using Critical Incidents: The Development Of A Behaviorally Based Training Program For Supervisor Citizenship Behavior And Feedback Skills, Jody J. Lecheler
Using Critical Incidents: The Development Of A Behaviorally Based Training Program For Supervisor Citizenship Behavior And Feedback Skills, Jody J. Lecheler
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
It has been argued (Greer, 2013) that supervisors are a critical component in organizational effectiveness. Supervisors are required to hold many roles within the organization (Evans, 1965). Specifically, employees often see supervisors as representatives of the organization, while the organization depends on supervisors to maintain production (Greer, 2013). Many supervisors also fill a variety of other organizational roles such as mentor, trainer, motivator, disciplinarian, evaluator, and leader (Evans, 1965). For these reasons, effective supervisors are crucial to organizational success. The present study developed a behaviorally based training program for supervisors for a poultry processing organization. The training program content included …

Examining Quality Of Hire As A Function Of Person-Organization And Person-Job Fit At "Pharmco", Leah L. Palmer
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In response to the millennial job-hopping fad and increasingly low retention rates organizations are facing, it is more important than ever that the best-fit candidate is chosen for the position and the organization. There are two common ways fit is typically defined: person-organization (P-O) fit is the congruence between an employee and the characteristics of a company; person-job (P-J) fit is the match between an employee’s knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) and the requirements of the job in the organization (Edwards, 1991; Kristof, 1996). A large pharmaceutical company developed a quality of new hire criterion measure as a function of …

Court cases were identified using various online databases in an attempt to create an exhaustive list of cases to be used to better understand the role that social media has played in organizational settings and the legal implications of its use. The results of this study show that there were a significant number of cases involving termination and Facebook, and organizations prevailed in court significantly more than the defendant did. The …
A Framework For Clinical Healthcare Process Design: Investigating Applicability To Lean, Samuel Blake Ellsworth
A Framework For Clinical Healthcare Process Design: Investigating Applicability To Lean, Samuel Blake Ellsworth
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Healthcare delivery is a process-driven sequence of patient care treatments and services. A prescribed method for process design is required in order for healthcare organizations of the future not just to innovate, but to safely provide highly-reliable patient care. Some healthcare organizations have established the utilization of lean methodologies as a tool for process improvement. Other philosophies and methods such as Six-Sigma have also been introduced into hospitals to guide quality. Many of these efforts have provided theories or perspectives of quality improvement without being firmly connected to a model of application relative to clinical process design, process formulation, or …

Study Of Mechanical Properties Of Pva Fiber-Reinforced Concrete With Raman Spectroscopic Analysis, Ramyasree Annam
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The brittleness of concrete has always been a safety and economic issue of great concern. The low tensile strength of concrete is the cause of its intrinsic brittle nature. This is critical considering the amount of concrete used for the construction of highways, buildings, and other facilities. The mechanical properties of concrete must be improved to provide upgraded construction. Crack resistant and durable concrete has always been a major goal for engineers. Many approaches have been tried to make concrete a better construction material. Fiber reinforcement is an approach which has been shown to improve the quality and durability of …
Aging Ragefully: A Look At Aging Women In Four Contemporary American Dramas, Rachel Thomas
Aging Ragefully: A Look At Aging Women In Four Contemporary American Dramas, Rachel Thomas
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Despite the growing feminist discourse in America, ageism continues to be a problem, partially due to stereotypical representations of aging women in the media and in literature. This thesis examines the portrayals of aging women in four American dramas: Zona Gale’s Miss Lulu Bett, Edward Albee’s The American Dream and The Sandbox, and Tracey Letts’ August: Osage County. Each of the aging matriarchs in these dramas plays a different role within her family structure; however, all employ others’ perceptions of them as a means of gaining or keeping control over their own situation. Chapter 1 examines Mrs. Bett from Zona …

The “Fatty” Arbuckle Scandal, Will Hays, And Negotiated Morality In 1920s America, Aaron T. Whitehead
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In the autumn of 1921, silent film comedian Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle was arrested for the rape and murder of a model and actress named Virginia Rappé. The ensuing scandal created a firestorm of controversy not just around Arbuckle but the entire motion picture industry. Religious and moral reformers seized upon the scandal to decry the decline of “traditional” moral values taking place throughout American society in the aftermath of World War I. The scandal created a common objective for an anti-film coalition representing diverse social and religious groups, all dedicated to bringing about change in the motion picture industry through …

The Effects Of Age And Task On Visual Emotion Processing, Nicole Elaine Chambers
The Effects Of Age And Task On Visual Emotion Processing, Nicole Elaine Chambers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Younger adults’ perception of and attention to facial stimuli are enhanced by positive and negative emotional expressions, with negativity leading to a greater benefit than positivity. Conversely, older adults demonstrate a positivity bias, devoting more attention to positive stimuli and less to negative. It is unclear if age differences in these attentional preferences emerge due to differences in how their perceptual systems respond to positive and negative stimuli. Emotional facial expressions elicit enhanced P1 and N170 components of visually-evoked event-related potentials (ERP) over posterior scalp regions associated with vision. The current study examined the extent to which angry and happy …
Phylogeography Of Darlingtonea Kentuckensis And Molecular Systematics Of Kentucky Cave Trechines, Olivia Frances Boyd
Phylogeography Of Darlingtonea Kentuckensis And Molecular Systematics Of Kentucky Cave Trechines, Olivia Frances Boyd
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The monotypic cave carabid genus Darlingtonea is widely distributed along the eastern band of the Mississippian/Pennyroyal plateau in Kentucky and northern Tennessee. DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) was collected from one to four individuals from 27 populations, and patterns of phylogeography and population structure were inferred from COI haplotypes. A hierarchical analysis of molecular variance found low nucleotide diversity within populations and statistically significant variation among geographically-defined groups tested based on two a priori hypotheses of structure. Population structure among five distinct genetic clusters identifies approximate locations of barriers to gene flow among …
Moneyware: Simulating Software Portfolio Quality Management, Robert David Beverly
Moneyware: Simulating Software Portfolio Quality Management, Robert David Beverly
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this research we introduce MoneyWare, a simulator designed to explore and ultimately to provide guidance on simulating software portfolio quality management. The name “MoneyWare” is inspired by the movie Moneyball. It chronicled a baseball team which used more descriptive statistics to achieve a higher quality ball club with limited resources. MoneyWare is inspired by the observation that the problem of software development is somewhat analogous. Management is faced with an incoming stream of tasks for development. The tasks vary in terms of size, priority, risk, and date needed. But, in any case, the demands come to more than the …
Generating Random Walks And Polygons With Thickness In Confinement, Sai Sindhuja Veeramachaneni
Generating Random Walks And Polygons With Thickness In Confinement, Sai Sindhuja Veeramachaneni
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Algorithms to generate walks (chains of unit-length, freely-jointed segments) and polygons (closed walks) in spherical confinements have been developed in the last few years. These algorithms generate polygons inside spherical confinement based on their mathematically derived probability distributions. The generated polygons do not occupy any volume { although that would be useful for some applications. This thesis investigates how to generate walks and polygons which occupy some volume in spherical confinement. More specifically, in this thesis, existing methods described in the literature have been studied and implemented to generate walks and polygons in confinement. Additionally, these methods were adapted to …
Prospects For Improving Bilingual Education: An Analysis Of Conditions Surrounding Bilingual Education Programs In U.S. Public Schools, Jennifer A. Gorman
Prospects For Improving Bilingual Education: An Analysis Of Conditions Surrounding Bilingual Education Programs In U.S. Public Schools, Jennifer A. Gorman
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Bilingual education is a subject of debate in education. Some claim that bilingual education programs are detrimental to students, but decades of research supports the benefits of bilingualism and bilingual education for both English Language Learners and monolingual English speakers. The U.S. does not have bilingual education programs in proportion to the needs that these programs could meet for students in public schools. If bilingualism is beneficial, then why do we not have more bilingual education programs? Research extensively covers the internal components of bilingual education programs but only touches on the effect of the external conditions necessary for program …
Accessing Chilling Conditions For Perennial Fruit Crop Production In Kentucky, Yao Xue
Accessing Chilling Conditions For Perennial Fruit Crop Production In Kentucky, Yao Xue
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Temperate Region fruit and nut trees, and many other perennial plants, require cool winter temperatures (chilling hours) to ensure leaf and flower bud production in the following season. Temperate Regions are characterized by variable winter and spring temperatures. Failure of meeting sufficient chilling requirement results in deformed fruits, unequal maturation, and other plant deformities, thereby reducing quality and yields. Chilling requirements are expressed as number of accumulated hours within a range of approximately 32º to 45ºF or 0º to 7.2ºC. These requirements are specific for level of temperature, length of temperature period, and species and cultivar of plants. Information on …

The Effects Of Classroom And Informal-Interactional Diversity On Learning And Democracy Outcomes, Chloe Elizabeth Williams
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Exposure to increased diversity has been found to produce beneficial results in both learning and democracy outcomes across races; however, this relationship is more consistent for White students than students of color (Gurin, Dey, Hurtado, & Gurin, 2002). Using the data from a campus-wide diversity survey, the relationship between two types of diversity (informal-interactional and classroom) with learning and democracy outcomes was examined in a mid-sized university. Additional analyses were conducted to identify trends in diversity attitude and perception of campus climate toward diversity. Increased classroom diversity and informal-interactional diversity were both found to be related to increased learning and …
