Curriculum Based Measurement-Written Expression: Effects Of Choice And Interest On Third Graders’ Writing, Morgan L. Schrader
Curriculum Based Measurement-Written Expression: Effects Of Choice And Interest On Third Graders’ Writing, Morgan L. Schrader
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) has many effective uses in the school system and its use is increasing. Most CBM research focuses on the area of reading and little on writing. Only one study was found that examined the effects of choice in story starters on students’ writing performance, and a few studies examined the effects of interest level of writing topics, although none using CBM as a measure. Past research has indicated girls score significantly higher on CBM measures of writing than boys. This study investigated if choice and interest level in a story starter topic have an effect on students’ …
Traditional Cultural Properties And Casita Rincón Criollo, Virginia Denise Siegel
Traditional Cultural Properties And Casita Rincón Criollo, Virginia Denise Siegel
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
According to the 1990 bulletin issued by the National Park Service, traditional cultural properties (TCPs) derive their significance from cultural practices or beliefs of living communities. This thesis centers on a case study of the nomination of Casita Rincón Criollo to the National Register of Historic Places as a TCP. The nomination is a collaborative project of Place Matters in New York City and Western Kentucky University, initiated by the American Folklore Society Working Group in Folklore and Historic Preservation Policy. Casita Rincón Criollo has several issues that make nomination to the National Register tricky. Casitas are small “houses,” typically …
Analysis Of Discrete Fractional Operators And Discrete Fractional Rheological Models, Meltem Uyanik
Analysis Of Discrete Fractional Operators And Discrete Fractional Rheological Models, Meltem Uyanik
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis is comprised of two main parts: Monotonicity results on discrete fractional operators and discrete fractional rheological constitutive equations. In the first part of the thesis, we introduce and prove new monotonicity concepts in discrete fractional calculus. In the remainder, we carry previous results about fractional rheological models to the discrete fractional case. The discrete method is expected to provide a better understanding of the concept than the continuous case as this has been the case in the past. In the first chapter, we give brief information about the main results. In the second chapter, we present some fundamental …
Understanding The Molecular Level Interactions Of Cancer Inhibitor Imatinib With Human Fibroblast Growth Factor-1, Tulsi Modi
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) lack signal sequences, and are exported through endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi-independent non-classical routes. FGFs work as modulators of various cellular activities like mitosis, differentiation, survival etc. Among the FGF family, which comprises of 23 different heparin proteins, human FGF-1 (hFGF-1), a potent angiogenic factors are one of the targets in cancer inhibition, as they are involved in blood vessel formation in tissues. There has been intensive research directed at the development of drugs that could effectively inhibit angiogenesis. In this context, the purpose of this study is to fully understand the molecular principles essential to determine probability …
Hearing Sensitivity And The Effect Of Sound Exposure On The Axolotl (Ambystoma Mexicanum), Amy K. Fehrenbach
Hearing Sensitivity And The Effect Of Sound Exposure On The Axolotl (Ambystoma Mexicanum), Amy K. Fehrenbach
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) has been used as a model organism for studying development, genetics, and regeneration. Although the sensory hair cells of the lateral line of this species have been shown to be able to regenerate, it is not known whether this also occurs in the inner ear. In fact, little is known about the hearing capabilities of the axolotl or other salamander species. I recorded auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) of six axolotls at eleven frequencies (0.1, 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, and 6 kHz) in order to produce baseline audiograms of underwater pressure sensitivity. …
Violence For A Peaceful End: Rhetorical Violence, Fundamentalist Eschatology, And The Interpretive Tradition Of Revelation, Tommi Karin Waters
Violence For A Peaceful End: Rhetorical Violence, Fundamentalist Eschatology, And The Interpretive Tradition Of Revelation, Tommi Karin Waters
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
With the rise of extremist fundamentalist groups, such as ISIS, it is important to note similar happenings in other traditions. This thesis traces the interpretive tradition of the Book of Revelation, from its composition in 90 C.E. through the dispensationalist usage of it by John Nelson Darby in the 19th century, and how its modern use by American Christian fundamentalist groups leads to rhetorical violence, including feelings of marginalization and societal targeting, and creation of insider/outsider dynamics with those outside the tradition. While rhetorical violence—language and behaviors that harm others and that occur so regularly that they often become routinized …
Boundary Problems For One And Two Dimensional Random Walks, Miky Wright
Boundary Problems For One And Two Dimensional Random Walks, Miky Wright
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis provides a study of various boundary problems for one and two dimensional random walks. We first consider a one-dimensional random walk that starts at integer-valued height k > 0, with a lower boundary being the x-axis, and on each step moving downward with probability q being greater than or equal to the probability of going upward p. We derive the variance and the standard deviation of the number of steps T needed for the height to reach 0 from k, by first deriving the moment generating function of T. We then study two types of two-dimensional random walks with …

One-Step Synthesis Of Kanamycin Functionalized Gold Nanoparticles With Potent Antibacterial Activity Against Resistant Bacterial Strains, Hitesh Kumar Waghwani
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
On the verge of entering the post-antibiotic era, numerous efforts are in place to regain the losing potential of antibiotics which are proving ineffective against common bacterial infections. Engineered nanomaterials, especially gold nanoparticles (GNPs) capped with antibacterial agents are proving to be an effective and novel strategy against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. In this study, we report a one-step synthesis of kanamycin-capped GNPs (20 ± 5 nm) utilizing the combined reducing and capping ability of the aminoglycoside antibiotic, kanamycin. Antibacterial assays showed dosedependent broad spectrum activity of Kan-GNPs against Gram-positive (Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus durans), Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Enterobacter …

This thesis introduces the idea of Band Theory and how it can be used to describe a solid-state materials ability to carry an electrical charge. Next, this thesis defines what makes a material a conductor, semiconductor, or insulator. Semiconductors are attracting interest in chemistry, as well as in the manufacturing of consumer electronics, because of their ability to carry a charge, without the risk of short-circuiting like traditional conductors.1,4 Organic semiconductors, which behave differently than traditional semiconductors, are of particular interest because they offer mechanical flexibility, lowcost, simplicity, and the ability to be manufactures at low temperatures.6 Nonorganic and organic …
Characterizing Water As Gap Fill For Double Glazing Units, Bright Adu
Characterizing Water As Gap Fill For Double Glazing Units, Bright Adu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The use of sunlight has always been a major goal in the design and operation of commercial buildings to minimize electrical consumption of artificial lighting systems. Glazing systems designed to allow optimal visible light transmission also allow significant unwanted direct solar heat gain caused by infrared light. Conversely, glazing systems that are designed to reflect unwanted direct solar heat gain significantly reduce the transmittance of visible light through windows. The goal of this research was to characterize the performance of water as gap-fill for double-glazing units in eliminating the compromises that exist in current glazing systems with respect to light …
Further Evaluating The Effect Of Behavioral Observability And Overall Impressions On Rater Agreement: A Replication Study, Patrick Sizemore
Further Evaluating The Effect Of Behavioral Observability And Overall Impressions On Rater Agreement: A Replication Study, Patrick Sizemore
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This replication study sought to analyze the effects of behavioral observability and overall impressions on rater agreement, as recently examined by Roch, Paquin, & Littlejohn (2009) and Scott (2012). Results from the study performed by Roch et al. indicated that raters are more likely to agree when items are either more difficult to rate or less observable. In the replication study conducted by Scott, the results did not support the relationship which Roch et al. found between observability and rater agreement, but did support the relationship previously found between item difficulty and rater agreement. The four objectives of this replication …
Syntheses, Structures And Properties Of Metal-Organic Frameworks, Xin Liu
Syntheses, Structures And Properties Of Metal-Organic Frameworks, Xin Liu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Mercury is one of the most serious heavy metal pollution sources that threaten people’s health. For decades, people have developed many technologies and materials to capture mercury from flue gas of coal-fired plant. Currently, the most effective material for mercury absorption is powdered activated carbon, which shows increased efficiency when modified with halogen functional groups such as bromine. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have potential applications in mercury capture due to their fantastic properties such as high porosity and high thermal stability. More important, their pore sizes and topology structures can be controlled through choosing different organic ligands in the syntheses. However, …
The Effects Of Anticipated Feedback Proximity On Performance: Exploring The Moderating Role Of Self-Efficacy And Task Type, Xingya Xu
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study investigated the effect of anticipated feedback proximity (immediately after completing the task or one week later) on performance and the moderating role of self-efficacy and task types (analytical or creative). I hypothesized that expecting rapid feedback should yield better performance than expecting delayed feedback, for people with high self-efficacy or those who receive analytical tasks. For those who receive creative tasks or have low self-efficacy, expecting rapid feedback may produce negative impact on performance. The results indicated a trend of main effect of anticipated feedback proximity. Specifically, participants performed better when they expected immediate feedback relative to …

The Influence Of Texting And Virtual Peers On Adolescent Alcohol Use, Eric Steven Gregory
The Influence Of Texting And Virtual Peers On Adolescent Alcohol Use, Eric Steven Gregory
Dissertations
The Social Development Theory has guided substance abuse prevention planning and programming for the past two decades. One of the key risk factors cited in and targeted by Social Development Model strategies is that of the influence of peers on adolescent substance use. With the advent of modern cellular technology, the manner in which adolescents currently interact has shifted in preference from that of traditional face-to-face to interaction through text messaging. Recent research has suggested a link between the frequency of adolescent texting behavior and adolescent substance use. This shift in interaction may influence the mechanisms of peer influence and …
The Assessment Of Organizational Culture And Servant Leadership Within An African American Church: A Descriptive Study Of Behavioral Norms And Expectations, Walter Malone Iii
The Assessment Of Organizational Culture And Servant Leadership Within An African American Church: A Descriptive Study Of Behavioral Norms And Expectations, Walter Malone Iii
Dissertations
The lack of success in nonprofit organizations often is due to challenges in management (Drucker, 2008). Faith-based organizations are not immune to these problems. The church struggles to live out its mission, often due to ineffective practices (Barna & Jackson, 2004). Chand (2011) asserted that it is the culture of an organization that builds or erodes its effectiveness. In the context of the church, servant leadership practices are considered to be a contributing factor to organizational effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to examine organizational culture and servant leadership as perceived by the leadership team of an African American …
