Objective: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) has one of the highest mortality rates of all mental health disorders, low recovery rate and is associated with widespread endocrine dysfunction. Mental toughness (MT) is a critical determinant of success in various high-pressure environments. Traditional methods of assessing MT often rely on subjective metrics only (self-assessed questionnaire scores), which may lack the precision and objectivity necessary for a thorough understanding. Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets regularly have highly stressful and physically demanding training, making adequate nutritional knowledge and eating habits essential for optimal health and physical performance. However, there is limited work looking at the ROTC cadet’s nutritional knowledge, dietary patterns, and perceived health. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate ROTC cadets' nutrition knowledge and perceived health. Weight management via exercise is critical in both athletic and general populations. It is unclear what modality of exercise elicits the greatest caloric efficiency. PURPOSE: To compare the energy expenditure of three different exercise regimens when performed at a self-selected pace. METHODS: Recreationally active men (n=3) and women (n=4) performed 3 separate exercise bouts at a self-selected pace: total body Tabata (TBT), treadmill running Tabata (TRT), and continuous running (CONT) in a counterbalanced manner with at least 48h between bouts. Cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) is crucial for heart health, mediated by the sympathetic and autonomic systems (SAS). The link between CAM and aerobic exercise underscores the importance of aerobic fitness assessments in optimizing training to enhance performance. Heart rate variability (HRV) assesses CAM in various healthy populations, with the Stress Index (SI) identified as key in determining the SAS regulation involvement in performance and recovery outcomes. In physically active people (e.g., ~8,000 steps/d), an acute bout of exercise improves postprandial fat metabolism when measured the morning after exercise. However, in people who have been inactive for more than two days, the acute bout of exercise does not improve postprandial fat metabolism as reflected by a greater increase in plasma triglyceride concentration and a reduced whole body fat oxidation. Sprint interval training (SIT) is usually performed at maximal ‘all-out’ intensities, that are 5-8-times higher than the power needed to elicit VO2peak. The effects of the menstrual cycle (MC) on exercise metabolism and performance are equivocal. PURPOSE: To investigate whether the MC impacted submaximal exercise oxygen consumption (VO2) and Critical Power (CP) in recreationally active, eumenorrheic females. METHODS: Eight eumenorrheic females (Age: 33±8 y, VO2max: 36.9±3.8 ml/kg/min) completed fasted exercise testing in 3 distinct phases of the MC (early follicular, late follicular, and mid luteal). Changes in estrogen and progesterone across the menstrual cycle impact many biological systems including resting and postprandial metabolism. PURPOSE: To investigate whether menstrual cycle phase impacted resting and postprandial energy expenditure (EE) and substrate utilization in recreationally active, eumenorrheic females. An individual’s ability to use oxygen to sustain aerobic performance, as denoted by the oxygen uptake efficiency (OUE), is calculated by dividing oxygen uptake (VO2) by ventilation (VE). Whether nasal breathing (NB) during exercise would improve OUE more significantly compared to combined breathing (CB) remains uncertain. Nasal breathing (NB) during aerobic exercise has gained attention due to its potential benefits to physical performance and health adaptations. However, it is unclear how an NB-induced increase in the partial pressure of CO2 (PetCO2) affects the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Proteostasis, the intricate process of maintaining the proteome, is a critical matter for cellular health. The regulation of the multiple intersecting metabolic pathways comprising the proteostatic network is correspondingly complex and incompletely understood; however, a new and intriguing candidate in understanding this process has emerged in the form of microRNA (miRNA), small RNA species which are capable of regulating hundreds of genes at once by binding to and degrading mRNA transcripts. The Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER) is a commonly used indicator of the body’s metabolism in exercise studies. The RER is defined as the ratio of carbon dioxide produced to oxygen consumed and is used to estimate carbohydrate and fat oxidation in the body. An RER of 0.7 is indicative of fat breakdown with an RER of 1.0 indicative of high rates of carbohydrate metabolism. RMRratio provides an indication of energy availability by comparing measured resting metabolic rate (RMR) to that predicted by an equation using values such as age, height, and lean mass. RMRratio has been associated with psychological variables such as cognitive restraint (CR) and Drive for Thinness (DT) in young, active women. First-morning spot samples are commonly used to assess hydration status accurately. However, there is a lack of literature examining the accuracy of afternoon spot samples to assess hydration status compared to the morning samples and the relationships between variables, especially in the afternoon assessments.
