International Volunteerism In The United States, 2005, Benjamin Lough Jul 2006

International Volunteerism In The United States, 2005, Benjamin Lough

Center for Social Development Research

This working paper uses 2005 CPS data to describe the frequency of international volunteerism in the United States by select demographic characteristics and length of service abroad. Nearly one million individuals reported volunteering internationally at least once in 2005. Young or middle-aged college graduates with higher-incomes, employed full-time, and married without dependent children were the most frequent candidates for service abroad. The majority of volunteers spent two weeks or less overseas, and volunteered with a faith-based organization either domestically or internationally. Limitations in the data help identify areas needing further research.

Attitudes Towards The Child Trust Fund: What Do Parents Think?, Rajiv Prabhakar Jul 2006

Attitudes Towards The Child Trust Fund: What Do Parents Think?, Rajiv Prabhakar

Center for Social Development Research

The Labour government has recently introduced the Child Trust Fund. This pays all new babies a £250 or £500 capital endowment from government. This is locked into a special account until the child’s 18th birthday. Parents are key to the success of this policy as they will make many of the key decisions about savings and investment. Little is known, however, about what new parents think of this policy. This paper addresses this by providing original evidence on what parents think of the basic features of this policy; whether the Child Trust Fund will make them more likely to save; …

Contributions Of The Earned Income Tax Credit To Community Development In Indian Country, Kristen Wagner, Karen Edwards, Miriam Jorgensen, Dana Klar

Center for Social Development Research

The earned income tax credit (EITC) has become a central element in a suite of programs and polices that promote “asset building” for the poor. Increasingly, it has become a way not only for individuals but also communities to turn their economic circumstances around. The Center for Social Development in collaboration with Kathryn M. Buder Center for American Indian Studies engaged ten Native community organizations currently providing free tax preparation services in a study that examined uptake and potential uses of Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) income by Native people. Through community surveys we learned that a majority of survey …

Social Impact: Productive Aging: Tapping Into Energy Of Older Americans, Janet Edwards

Social Impact Publication

Welcome to the new era of "Productive Aging." As the first wave of baby boomers turns 60 this year, the typical retirement scenario of softening 60-somethings retreating into a vacation-like vacuum is passé. Healthier, wealthier, and better educated, this new generation of older adults seeks—perhaps “demands” — ongoing productive roles in mainstream society.

Social Impact: The Globalization Of Social Work: How Flat Are We?, Rick Skwiot

Social Impact Publication

In this book, the World is Flat, New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman posits that a global technological revolution has increased economic opportunities and create a world that is more connected than ever before. But does a flatter economic world equal a more just world? Are the benefits resulting from greater connectivity distributed in a way that everyone can share in newfound prosperity? The answer is an unequivocal no.

Exploring Disability And Poverty In Nepal: An Application Of The Capability Approach, Patricia Welch Saleeby Dec 2005

Exploring Disability And Poverty In Nepal: An Application Of The Capability Approach, Patricia Welch Saleeby

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to examine the relationships between disability and poverty in Nepal. Linkages between disability, poverty, and deprivation are explored to develop an in-depth understanding of these relationships, to recommend strategies for intervention, and ultimately to improve the situations of individuals and their families experiencing disability and poverty. Since traditional poverty measures such as income and consumption do not fully capture the multi-dimensional construct of poverty, a capability approach was used to further an understanding of the relationships between disability and deprivation at individual and household levels and to address three research questions. What are …

Saving And Asset Accumulation Among Low-Income Families With Children In Idas, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Kristen Wagner, Fred M. Ssewamala Jul 2005

Saving And Asset Accumulation Among Low-Income Families With Children In Idas, Michal Grinstein-Weiss, Kristen Wagner, Fred M. Ssewamala

Center for Social Development Research

Research indicates that low-income families with children have many motives to save, however, the costs of raising children, low wage employment, means tested programs, and the need for child care make it difficult for them to save. Using data from the American Dream Demonstration (n=1,801), this study examines saving performances of low-income families with children in a matched savings program – Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). The results indicate that households with children in IDAs can save when they are provided structured opportunities. In addition, this study finds that institutional factors, not merely individual characteristics, are highly associated with IDA saving …

Rural America: Historical Overview, Jami C. Curley

Center for Social Development Research

Wealth Building Strategies In Rural States: Are They Doing Enough?, William Schweke Jul 2005

Wealth Building Strategies In Rural States: Are They Doing Enough?, William Schweke

Center for Social Development Research

If the poor and near-poor Americans are to achieve lasting economic advancement, we need to promote a path that provides a better “starting gate,” as well as helps individuals and families to weather economic hardships. In our view, asset building is key. This is true for rural as well as urban households. The purpose of this paper is to undertake an initial and rough assessment of asset building efforts in rural states. It begins by setting the scene through short discussions of why broadened asset ownership matters, how has the United States supported opportunity-enhancing asset policies in the past, and …
