Self-Identified Atheists In 12-Step Substance Use Disorder Treatment And Aftercare, Elizabeth Clare Bayley
Self-Identified Atheists In 12-Step Substance Use Disorder Treatment And Aftercare, Elizabeth Clare Bayley
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The Minnesota model is ubiquitous in the United States for the treatment of substance use disorder (SUD). The model uses 12 steps and is centered on a belief in god(s) or a higher power; however, it is anathema to an atheist worldview. Researchers have noted that atheists do not readily become involved with 12-step programs and tend to drop out; however, there had been no qualitative investigations of the lived experiences of atheists in 12-step SUD treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether 12-step SUD treatment was problematic for atheists. An integrated theoretical framework was used. Minority …
Relationships Between Social Bonds And Non-Reoffender Status Among Female Offenders, Tiffinny Beard
Relationships Between Social Bonds And Non-Reoffender Status Among Female Offenders, Tiffinny Beard
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe purpose of this quantitative longitudinal correlational study was to examine whether positive social bonds with caring, supportive family, prosocial peers, and spouses/partners were significantly predictive of non-reoffender status using archival data from a sample of female offenders who were under community supervision in the state of Michigan during the years 2011–2014. The study had three interval predictor variables: positive social bonds with family, prosocial peers, and spouse/partner. The dichotomous criterion variable was recidivism (i.e., reoffending within a three-year period). The study sample was 325 female offenders on probation or parole in Michigan during the years of 2011–2014. Most of …
The Influence Of Electronic Health Records Systems On Physicians' Efficiency And Effectiveness, William Everette Bond
The Influence Of Electronic Health Records Systems On Physicians' Efficiency And Effectiveness, William Everette Bond
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractElectronic Health Records (EHR) were introduced into the field of medicine to replace outdated paper files with searchable, and easily transferrable electronic files. The results of numerous research studies have shown that the use of EHR allowed for beneficial outcomes for the physician and the patient. Some of the benefits included a reduction in scheduling and medication prescription errors. Concurrently, some of the negative factors attributed to EHR use included interoperability issues, reductions in facetime with patients, increased physician workload, and an increase in physician burnout. Little research was found that examined the negative factors from the perspective of the …
Survival Strategies For Small And Medium Scale Enterprises In Nigerian Confectionery Industry, Rita Ejelehi Brodie-Mends
Survival Strategies For Small And Medium Scale Enterprises In Nigerian Confectionery Industry, Rita Ejelehi Brodie-Mends
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Incorrect start-up strategies account for the failure of many small-and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) in the first 5 years of operation. A lack of business owner entrepreneurial skills and enterprise development contributes to the high mortality rate of SMEs, the failure of which is a significant limitation on global economic growth and job creation. Grounded in the resource-based theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore strategies five SME confectionary business owners in Lagos, Nigeria, used to sustain their businesses beyond the first 5 years of start-up. The participants were owners of SME confectionary businesses who implemented strategies …

Impact Of Healthcare Providers’ Perception On Telehealth Implementation, Misty Leann Cantrell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Telehealth has been proven to have a significant impact on patient outcomes; however, the use of telehealth in both rural and urban areas is sporadic and inconsistent. Although researchers have investigated this issue, there is little literature on the understanding of the impact healthcare provider (HCP) perception plays in this sporadic usage. The purpose of this quantitative research study was to understand how perception and behavioral intention of HCPs impacted the use of telehealth in rural and urban areas. The unified theory of acceptance and technology (UTAUT) was used to structure this research to facilitate determining the correlation between perception …

Nurse Educator Perspectives On Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum And Moral Courage Development, April Ciesielski
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Newly licensed nurses may enter the profession without the tools to cope with morally distressing events in the workplace. Experiences of moral distress at work negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing, and effects of moral distress on new nurses may result in job dissatisfaction, burnout, and abandonment of the profession. The specific problem is that undergraduate nursing students are entering the professional field experiencing moral distress. In this study, nurse educators’ perspectives regarding how undergraduate nursing curriculum addresses the topic of moral distress and strategies and skills that can enhance moral courage were explored. The conceptual framework comprised Kidder’s …
Rural Older Adults’ Wellbeing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Christina Clevenger
Rural Older Adults’ Wellbeing During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Christina Clevenger
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Recent studies reveal adults 65 and over are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. However, this older generation is often vulnerable to exclusion, marginalization, and discrimination, made worse by the events and circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic brought unprecedented challenges and disproportionate threats to the integrity and wellbeing of older adults, especially those living in rural communities. Nonetheless, little is known about the effects the pandemic had on rural older adults’ wellbeing. This generic qualitative study explored rural older adults’ wellbeing during the pandemic, using the theoretical frameworks of Erikson’s stage theory of psychosocial development and Seligman's …

Nurses’ Perceptions Of Culturally Competent Care At The Bedside, Judith Cox
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The population served by health care systems in the United States is widely diversified, which requires nurses to be culturally competent in their care practices. However, studies have shown that nurses do not consistently deliver culturally competent care. This basic qualitative study was designed to explore nurses’ perceptions of cultural competence at the bedside to understand what is needed to improve cultural competency practices. Campinha-Bacote’s conceptual framework for cultural competency was used to guide this study that included face-to-face, videoconference interviews using semi structured and open-ended questions from 13 voluntary, acute care bedside nurses. Interviews were audio recorded and uploaded …

Educational Tool Kit For Mental Health Nurses To Combat Compassion Fatigue, Cleopatra Enakhena
Educational Tool Kit For Mental Health Nurses To Combat Compassion Fatigue, Cleopatra Enakhena
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Health care professionals, such as mental health nurses, use the two essential tenets of compassion and empathy when caring for their patients. But constant exposure to traumatized patients under a nurse’s care can lead to burnout and compassion fatigue (CF), which affects the nurse’s provision of adequate patient care. Mental health nurses’ lack of education and awareness on CF has led to diminished provision of safe, effective, and quality care to their patients. Therefore, the purpose of this scholarly doctoral of nursing project was to develop an educational tool kit that might help mental health nurses combat CF within their …

Relationship Between Early Years’ Activities Of Daily Living And Alzheimer’S Disease Onset, Linyi Fan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A few promising studies have indicated that activities of daily life (ADL) may be a useful way of predicting Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). However, the existing cross-sectional studies fail to show how ADLs in early years predict AD, and how social factors influence health either in addition to or in interaction with individual risk factors. Using a social epidemiology framework, this study examined the relationship between early years’ ADL and the development of AD in later years. This quantitative study included 4,526 participants derived from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) dataset. The dependent variable was whether the participant has been …

Exploration Of The Cultural Perspectives Of Caregivers Of African American And African Children With Delayed Diagnosis Of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Deirdre Marie Johnson-Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThrough the lens of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological theory, the purpose of the study was to explore African American and African caregivers’ perceptions of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), child development knowledge, religious/traditional beliefs, and fear of stigma within the context of their culture. African and African American children with ASD are identified at later ages than Caucasian children by 1 1/2 to 2 years. Disparities in educational and social outcomes of African and African American children with ASD may be related to this identification delay. Current literature regarding African and African American caregivers’ perceptions of children with ASD is sparse. An ethnographic …
Family Presence During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Clinical Practice Guidelines, Poonam Kalkat
Family Presence During Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Clinical Practice Guidelines, Poonam Kalkat
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Healthcare providers can be skeptical if not resistant to patient-family centered care if standards of care are not written in a policy or guideline. The 2009 Emergency Nurses Association position statement supports giving families the option to be present during resuscitative measures to meet their emotional needs. However, healthcare organizations are frequently not implementing this statement into their practice. Based on peer-reviewed articles retrieved through an in-depth literature search and using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II model, the gap in practice was addressed by creating a clinical practice guideline (CPG). The practice-focused questions addressed what …

Water/Sanitation, Hygiene, And Risk Factors Associated With Under-5 Mortality In Côte D’Ivoire, Ouda Kamagate
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite remarkable progress in children’s survival since 1990, the global burden of the under-5 mortality rate (U5MR) remains immense. According to the World Health Organization, about 5.2 million children below 5 died in 2019, with 14,000 dying each day. Literature reveals that the lack and limitation of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) are linked to deaths in childhood. Cote d’Ivoire still lags behind expectations with 79 per 1000 live births in 2019 rather than 25 and below, so there is a need to uncover to what extent the U5MR is affected by WaSH. Through a cross-sectional design guided by the …

Perspectives Of Religious Faith Leaders On Hate Crime Policies, Alphonso Manns
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPrejudice and discrimination stigmatize members of the lesbian gay bisexual transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community as abnormal, which has been attributed to religious opposition and the exercise of ministerial privileges or religious liberty within the law. Religious organizations may indirectly contribute to the public legal rights of members of the LGBTQ community. But little is known about the perspectives of religious faith leaders (RFLs) and how they influence the development and implementation of pro-equality and hate crime policies. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of RFLs from one community in a midwestern state. The narrative policy …

An Exploration Of Fairness, Judicial Independence And Employee Protections, Christina M. Martin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Sexual harassment is an issue that can plague any organization, especially ones that do not have a formal complaint process or is built on a system based on hierarchy. Most notably, some federal judges abused their power based on a system that did not have any checks and balances in place as preventative measure against harassment. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore female federal judiciary employees’ understanding of employee protection principles extended to staff of the judicial branch, and to assess whether female federal judiciary employees were aware of reporting mechanisms for acts of misconduct. The research …
The Relationship Between Internet Livestream Religious Engagement And Social Support And Health-Related Quality Of Life, Kimberly Ann Mccowan
The Relationship Between Internet Livestream Religious Engagement And Social Support And Health-Related Quality Of Life, Kimberly Ann Mccowan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractReligious engagement is essential in terms of offering protective factors for mental and physical health. However, religious engagement has changed, and religious affiliation has decreased over the last decade. This change in religious practice is represented by a decline in religious engagement via disaffiliation of traditional brick and mortar forms of religious activity, with an emerging phenomenon of religious engagement on the Internet. This engagement leads to a gap within the literature regarding Internet-centric religious behaviors. The study aimed to fill this gap by increasing societal understanding of religious engagement behaviors on the Internet. Social support was used to explain …

Workforce Development Strategies That Impact Reentry Of Released Females In New York City, Shonae L. Mills
Workforce Development Strategies That Impact Reentry Of Released Females In New York City, Shonae L. Mills
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Formerly incarcerated women often find it difficult to reintegrate into their communities after release. For this population, adjustment to changes directly impacts their reentry success in all areas of life. Previous research has identified significant gaps in social services for formerly incarcerated females (FIFs). Service providers' perspectives about practices and policies to address the problem are inadequate, and as a result, service provisions suffer. Therefore, this qualitative study was used to examine the shared experiences of 15 workforce development professionals who assist FIFs during their reentry process to evaluate and assess the most effective methods or policies that assist this …

Overeating As A Coping Response To Workplace Gender Discrimination: The Role Of Resilience And Social Support, Rosemarie Charmain Mitchell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Gender discrimination in the workplace continues to be a persistent source of stress for women even after 5 decades of antidiscrimination legislation in the United States. Women are more likely than men to cope with stress by overeating, which is a risk factor for chronic illnesses and obesity. Much less is known about the protective factors that could weaken the association between perceived stress and overeating. The purpose of this quantitative study was to address this gap in the literature by examining whether resilience and social support are moderators of the overeating response for women who have experienced gender discrimination …

An Exploration Of Male Ex-Offenders' Experiences Of Postsecondary Education And Reentry, Marvin Lee Moore, Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The research problem addressed in this study is postsecondary education in prisons, ex-offenders, and the issues surrounding their reintegration into society. The primary focus is on ex-offenders who had received postsecondary education in prison, their experience obtaining a credential, and their ability to cease criminalistic behavior. After time served and education acquired, lack of inclusion within society perpetuated the problems ex-offenders faced when reentry occurred. This study includes an exploration of the experiences of ex-offenders who had received postsecondary education while in prison. The theoretical frameworks for this study were Leibrich’s desistance theory and Bandura’s self-efficacy theory. The generic qualitative …
