There has been a spike in overdoses in the United States resulting in approximately 100,306 deaths since the COVID-19 pandemic began with overdose results from men in opioid and fentanyl abuse with a shortage of resources for substance use disorders and mental health. Families across the U.S. have been affected with the social problem of substance abuse disorders for many years due to environmental and biological constructs due to loss of jobs, housing, limited childcare, and exposure to drugs and alcohol at an early age. In a Midwestern nonprofit, predominantly White, Catholic university, the problem was low retention of African American students after completing a first-year seminar (FYS) course. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to explore perceptions and challenges of African American college students and faculty about the required FYS course. Using Tinto’s persistence theory, perceptions and challenges of students and faculty at the study site were explored. Data were collected using semistructured interviews with 10 African American students and a focus group with five faculty who taught the FYS course. Some adults in mid and late life may have been particularly sensitive to the negative effects of social disruptions due to COVID-19 restrictions. The current study explored whether sociability moderated links between disrupted contact with friends and family and multiple indicators of mental health. We collected quantitative data via an online survey from a community sample of 136 adults in mid to late life (M age = 67.77, range 50–91; 69.3% females; 92.7% White). We conducted a series of hierarchical linear regressions to test for moderation. Controlling for age, gender, and marital status, sociability moderated the associations between disruptions …

Despite efforts worldwide to increase diversity, women continue to be underrepresented in the most senior leadership and management positions. The aim of this study was to provide insight into whether specific variables increased female representation at the most senior levels of the U.S. Foreign Service. A quantitative correlational study was completed using an autoregressive integrated moving average model in SPSS. Reducing maternal mortality rates is one of the leading health indicators in the nation. Pregnant and postpartum Black mothers make up a disproportionate number of maternal deaths. Many result from failure to rescue (FTR), defined as the inability to prevent a death from a disease, illness, or complication. Over 700 women die daily from preventable causes related to pregnancy. Black patients are attributable to almost 40% of maternity mortality rates and represent over 50% of pregnancy-related deaths due to complications. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction before and after the implementation of the AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You) communication tool in a medical-surgical unit of an urban hospital. While there is considerable research on mental health, student mental health, and the importance of mental health, little empirical research has been conducted on rural student mental health in the United States. In this doctoral project, I focused on educating healthcare staff on using the situation-background-assessment-recommendation (SBAR) communication tool to improve documentation practices and reimbursement rates from Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies. My goal for the project was to determine if training on the SBAR tool would improve healthcare providers' knowledge of how to use it for documentation. The facility had experienced significant financial losses, exceeding $1 million in the last two quarters of 2023, due to inadequate documentation. In this doctoral project, I focused on educating healthcare staff on using the situation-background-assessment-recommendation (SBAR) communication tool to improve documentation practices and reimbursement rates from Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance companies. My goal for the project was to determine if training on the SBAR tool would improve healthcare providers' knowledge of how to use it for documentation. The facility had experienced significant financial losses, exceeding $1 million in the last two quarters of 2023, due to inadequate documentation. U.S. social workers experienced challenges and successes when working with Black male clients in mental and medical health and addiction therapy or treatment settings before and during the simultaneous events of the COVID-19 pandemic, political elections, and racial violence/social injustice movements of the late 2010s–early 2020s. This project addressed the lack of knowledge regarding evidence-based practices to address the challenges and positive therapeutic experiences of social workers, specifically those working in clinical practice with Black American male clients.
