Performance-Based Funding Models And Student Outcomes At Community And Technical Colleges, Victoria Ichungwa
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Performance-based funding (PBF) models have become increasingly prevalent in higher education. While designed to improve student outcomes, their effectiveness, particularly at community and technical colleges (CTCs), remains uncertain. Given CTCs' crucial role in providing equitable education, understanding PBF’s effectiveness is imperative for equitable funding. In this study the relationship between the Student Achievement Initiative (SAI) model and student outcomes at the Washington State CTCs was examined. Existing research on PBF is limited, often focusing on 4-year institutions and lagging outcomes using proxy data. These gaps were addressed by examining student outcomes for the 34 Washington State CTCs using secondary archival …

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The burden of the disease in the region is partly attributed to delayed health-seeking, resulting in advanced disease presentation, delayed diagnosis, poor outcomes, and low survival. This quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate the socioecological factors that influence the anticipated medical health-seeking time for women in SSA experiencing breast cancer symptoms. The socioecological model (SEM) theoretical framework guided this study. A questionnaire was used to collect data from randomly selected (N = 343) women aged 18 years and older with no personal or familial history of breast …

Counseling Iowan Farmers: A Phenomenological Study Of Clinical Perspectives, Kathleen Ruscitto, Corinne W. Bridges
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Rural communities present unique challenges for counselors. Farmers experience high rates of suicidality, depression, and substance abuse and are less likely to seek mental health help due to associated stigma, financial strain, time constraints, and lack of specialized training among clinicians. This study sought to understand the lived experiences of counselors in rural Iowa who counsel male farmers. Participants completed a 60-minute semi-structured interview and demographics questionnaire. Hermeneutic phenomenology and the ecological perspective were used to identify and interpret these experiences, illuminating the need for culturally competent, contextually responsive counseling practices in rural settings. Engaging Children In Conversations About Loss With The Help Of A Canadian Activity Book, Giulia Adele Dinicola
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
In Canada, the practice of medically assisting patients in dying has been legal since 2016. Patients who have been diagnosed with serious diseases or disabilities—including mental illnesses, starting in March 2024—may meet the requirements to seek medically assisted suicide. As a result of this legalization, medical and ethical communities have expressed concerns regarding those who assist their loved ones in the process of dying. To date, little has been written about how children react when someone close to them decides to end their life due to unbearable suffering. In July 2022, the Canadian Virtual Hospice group published the Medical Assistance …
