Saliency Of Category Information In Person Perception For Ingroup And Outgroup Members, Cynthia Willis-Esqueda, Rosemary J. Esseks
Saliency Of Category Information In Person Perception For Ingroup And Outgroup Members, Cynthia Willis-Esqueda, Rosemary J. Esseks
Ethnic Studies Review
The saliency of category information in person perception for ingroup and outgroup members was investigated. European American participants were presented with a fictional character that varied in race (African American or European American) and occupational garb (military, judge, doctor, or athlete). Occupations were chosen to be either stereotypical or nonstereotypical for African Americans and European Americans with the aid of the Statistical Abstract of the United States (1992) percentages. Based on prior research findings (Park & Rothbart, 1982; Mackie & Worth, 1989), it was predicted European American participants would spontaneously describe an outgroup character by race (superordinate category information), but …

GEHLI - 2026 VCUL Team Project Publications
We propose the establishment of a VCU Media Lab – a professional creative media technology unit whose mission is to support the development, design, production and delivery of innovative media, multimedia, computer-based instruction, publications and tools in support of VCU education, research and marketing initiatives. This centrally administered, budgeted and resourced facility will acknowledge, refine, focus and expand media services that are currently being provided at VCU in a decentralized manner.

GEHLI - 2026 VCUL Team Project Publications
This project proposes the development of a Social Sciences Initiative at the undergraduate and graduate levels that will provide educational, research and service opportunities for faculty and students. These opportunities are envisioned as interdisciplinary, with a focus on community issues and priorities, and with the potential to create new links among existing educational/research units within the University. The development of a Social Sciences Initiative provides a direct link to the Mission of VCU through several of the Mission’s intents: “activities that increase knowledge and understanding of the world and inspire and enrich teaching” The Social Sciences Initiative will expand …

Involvement in community partnerships at Virginia Commonwealth University has its roots in the institution's history. The Medical College of Virginia, founded in1838, and the Richmond Professional Institute, founded in 1917, both sought to extend knowledge into the community to change peoples' lives for the better. Today, the VCU campuses are even more entwined with the City of Richmond -- physically, and increasingly so as a partner in the economic and social challenges and opportunities facing the City.
A Study Of Factors That Influence Academic Success Of Black American Middle School Males, Harvey S. Hicks Iii
A Study Of Factors That Influence Academic Success Of Black American Middle School Males, Harvey S. Hicks Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The Black American male has had to face and endure many physical, emotional, and psychological hardships since his ancestors arrived in this country as slaves. One of those hardships has been his constant status as a second-class citizen. Throughout his history in America, the Black male has received unequal pay, unequal justice, unequal medical care, unequal treatment, and unequal education. Yet, despite the circumstances and the odds, there have been Black males who have achieved in many fields. However, even today, in the field of education, achieving academically is not an endeavor most Black males pursue.
This study investigated some …
Gaba-A Receptor Subunit Alterations Following Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury And The Effects Of An Nmda Antagonist: A Western Blot Analysis, Cynthia J. Gibson
Gaba-A Receptor Subunit Alterations Following Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury And The Effects Of An Nmda Antagonist: A Western Blot Analysis, Cynthia J. Gibson
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) produces an acute phase of neuronal excitation followed by a chronic phase of depressed neuronal function. Alterations in excitatory and inhibitory receptor interactions may be dynamically involved in subsequent long-term detriments in neuronal and cognitive functioning. TBI- induced elevations in intracellular calcium concentrations ([Ca2+]i) are mediated primarily by the NMDA receptor. Elevated [Ca2+]i may trigger intracellular mechanisms which drive changes in GABA-A receptor protein synthesis and expression, ultimately resulting in receptor dysfunction.
Western blot analysis was used to investigate alterations to GABA-A receptor subunits α1 and β33 in the …

Factors Related To Persistence In The Study Of French At The College Level, Caroline E. Kirkpatrick
Theses and Dissertations
The current study was conducted to address the problem of declining enrollments in French classes. The purpose was to identify those factors that are responsible for student persistence in the study of French beyond the level required to obtain a general degree from the University. Research questions included the following topics: 1) students’ perception of their motivation for language learning, 2) the relationship of certain activities, the classroom climate, the role of the teacher, and the use of technology, to their motivation for language learning, 3) reasons students give for not continuing with their foreign language studies, and 4) factors …

UniverCity News, 1998-2001
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
