Are You An Emissary Of Jesus Christ?: Justice, The Catholic Church And The Chicano Movement, Alberto L. Pulido Jan 1991

Are You An Emissary Of Jesus Christ?: Justice, The Catholic Church And The Chicano Movement, Alberto L. Pulido

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In 1969, Católicos Por La Raza (CPLR) emerged as an ethnic "protest group" against the "injustices" of the American Catholic Church in San Diego and Los Angeles, California. CPLR was critical of the Catholic hierarchy's inconsistencies in relation to the Chicano community. As one of the wealthiest institutions, the Catholic Church was doing very little for a community that made up the largest part of the Church's membership. For CPLR, the Christian message of "justice" was not practiced by the leaders of the Church. In Los Angeles, Chicanos were asking why the Archdiocese chose to close a high school in …

A Stacked Deck: Racial Minorities And The New American Political Economy, Noel J. Kent Jan 1991

A Stacked Deck: Racial Minorities And The New American Political Economy, Noel J. Kent

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The 1960s brought the promise of a new era of social justice for all Americans. Indeed, the overturning of official, state-sanctioned racial structures was a watershed in national life. During the 1970s and 1980s, however, the earlier momentum of the civil rights period dissipated as the end of the postwar economic expansion ushered in a crisis of American culture and polity. "Symbolic racism" emerged as a powerful political and ideological instrument to buttress resistance to racial and ethnic equality. During the 1980s, a Reagan administration antagonistic to the aspirations of minorities and the working classes in general was able to …

[Review Of] Jacqueline Pope. Biting The Hand That Feeds Them: Organizing Women On Welfare At The Grass Roots Level, Mary Ann Busch Jan 1991

[Review Of] Jacqueline Pope. Biting The Hand That Feeds Them: Organizing Women On Welfare At The Grass Roots Level, Mary Ann Busch

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

As a social worker by training and practice, I found this book of great interest. I would highly recommend the text for second-year social work classes and especially for social work policy classes as a supplementary text. I believe that it would also be appropriate for an introductory women's study class as a supplementary text. Due to the cost of the text, I recommend that instructors place the volume on reserve rather than have the students individually purchase the book. The author chronicles the welfare rights movement in Brooklyn, New York, during the late sixties and early seventies in her …

[Review Of] Ann Allen Shockley, Ed. Afro-American Women Writers: 1746-1933. An Anthology And Critical Guide, Mary Young Jan 1991

[Review Of] Ann Allen Shockley, Ed. Afro-American Women Writers: 1746-1933. An Anthology And Critical Guide, Mary Young

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Despite almost four hundred years of racism, sexism and classism, Afro-American women have managed to sustain contact with their creative muses and with the needs and aspirations of their people. Frequently, these creative and activist women have been neglected by both Euro-American and Afro-American male critics. Additionally, with few exceptions these women writers have been excluded from the canon of Afro-American literature. Ann Allen Shockley has tried to remedy this situation in this anthology.

Geriatic Nurse Practitioner's Health Promotive Behaviors: A Test Of Theory Of Reasoned Action, Sandra L. Venegoni Jan 1991

Geriatic Nurse Practitioner's Health Promotive Behaviors: A Test Of Theory Of Reasoned Action, Sandra L. Venegoni

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to develop an instrument to test the theory of reasoned action (Fishbein & Ajzen, 1975) in a new behavioral domain the health promotive behaviors of geriatric nurse practitioners (GNPs). The two behavioral categories included in the study were health assessment and health teaching, each with its individual index of actions.

A questionnaire was developed to examine the beliefs of a sample of 200 certified geriatric nurse practitioners and to test the relationships of the theoretical model. Names of the subjects were randomly selected from the American Nurses' Association 1989 list of certified GNPs. Ninety-four …

Mechanisms Of Regulation Of The Human C-Myb Proto-Oncogene During Myelomonocytic Differentiation, Lawrence H. Boise Jan 1991

Mechanisms Of Regulation Of The Human C-Myb Proto-Oncogene During Myelomonocytic Differentiation, Lawrence H. Boise

Theses and Dissertations

Control of hematopoiesis is a complex set of events that is currently being dissected at the molecular level. To determine factors that may be crucial for commitment to terminal differentiation of myelomonocytic cells, a mutant of the HL-60 cell line was characterized at the cellular and molecular level. This clone, termed DMSOr, was shown to differentiate in a similar fashion as parental HL-60 in response to 1.3% DMSO at the morphologic and functional level. The anti-proliferative aspects of differentiation were also present in DMSOr as evidenced by decreased 3H-thymidine incorporation and an increased percentage of cells in the G0/G1 phase …

A researcher developed personal data form (PDF) collected demographic information. The 1967 version of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) provided job satisfaction measurements.

There was a statistically significant correlation between the general satisfaction scores measured by the PDF and MSQ. Analysis of demographic data provided a CRNA educator profIle. Job satisfaction data indicated that …

Spatial And Temporal Mechanisms Of Spinal Nociceptive Coding, Robert C. Coghill Jan 1991

Spatial And Temporal Mechanisms Of Spinal Nociceptive Coding, Robert C. Coghill

Theses and Dissertations

In order to better characterize spatial and temporal mechanisms of nociceptive processing in the central nervous system (CNS), the responses of rat spinal cord neuron populations to prolonged painful stimuli were examined. Metabolic mapping studies revealed that prolonged nociceptive thermal stimuli produced extensive activation in the deep dorsal horn, but minimal activation in the superficial dorsal horn. Electrophysiological investigations of neurons within these regions revealed that the responses of wide dynamic range (WDR) neurons, the predominate nociceptive neuron in the deep dorsal horn, did not habituate substantially to prolonged nociceptive stimuli. In contrast, the responses of nociceptive specific neurons, the …

The Names Quilt And The Art Educator’S Role, Doug Blandy, Karen Branen, Kristin G. Congdon, Laurie E. Hicks

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

During October of 1989, more than 9,000 individual memorial quilt panels were collected and displayed in Washington, D.C. by the NAMES Quilt Project. The panels, covering the equivalent of nine football fields, made public the grief of thousands of individuals and families whose loved ones have died of AlDS. This quilt, the NAMES Quilt, is an international effort to create a living visual memory of the devastation that the AIDS virus has inflicted on those who have died from the disease and those who have been left behind to grieve.

Obasan: The Politics Of The Japanese-Canadian Internment, Ann Rayson Jan 1991

Obasan: The Politics Of The Japanese-Canadian Internment, Ann Rayson

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Joy Kogawa is a well known Japanese-Canadian poet and novelist. Her award-winning autobiographical novel, Obasan (1981),[1] examines the personal wartime internment experience of the author through the fictionalized persona of Naomi Nakane and her Aunt Emily Kato. Obasan, the title character, is Naomi's other aunt, the one who raises her when World War II destroys the family. Emily is a political activist, the voice of protest and conscience in the novel, while the narrator, Naomi, has to work through her own silence and that of all Japanese-Canadians. As a novel with a dual voice, Obasan is able to probe the …

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems Jan 1991

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The City of Chicago recently embarked upon a pioneering effort to transform the quality of its public school system. The concept of decentralization that allows for neighborhood councils, greater decision-making at the local level, and increased parental involvement in the schools is not a new one. Similar governance structures of a century ago fell victim to class and ethnic factionalism. The progressive vision of a homogenous society assumed a passive clientele and a consensus culture. Particular educational programs brought diverse groups closer to the mainstream, but the resultant mass culture accommodated pluralistic values rather than the sought-after homogeneity.

Informal Education. Sociocultural Expression. And Symbolic Meaning In Popular Immigration Music Text, Jose Macias Jan 1991

Informal Education. Sociocultural Expression. And Symbolic Meaning In Popular Immigration Music Text, Jose Macias

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

One February morning as I noted the events of the primary school talent show, a sixth-grade boy belted out this song made popular in two countries by the Mexican rock group, Los Bukis. It was 1987, and I was doing fieldwork in a rural Mexican immigrant-sending community I call San Felipe, for an ethnography of families and their children who emigrated from Mexico to the United States[2]

[Review Of] Felicisima C. Serafica, Andrew I. Schwebel, Richard K. Russell, Paul D. Isaac, And Linda B. Myers, Eds. Mental Health Of Ethnic Minorities, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This edited collection is based on papers presented at a conference held at Ohio State University (1986), entitled Minority Mental Health: A Multicultural Knowledge Base for Psychological Providers. The chapters included in the book are expanded versions of the themes covered in the conference. This excellent book is a welcome entry into the ever-expanding field of psychology known variously as minority mental health, cross-cultural counseling, and multicultural counseling and psychotherapy. It is a field that has grown considerably in the last two decades, as counselors, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and other mental health providers and researchers have attempted to understand …

Classification Of Newborns Based On Maturity Rating And Intrauterine Growth At The Medical College Of Virginia Hospitals, Lydia Holmes Sund Jan 1991

Classification Of Newborns Based On Maturity Rating And Intrauterine Growth At The Medical College Of Virginia Hospitals, Lydia Holmes Sund

Theses and Dissertations

Nurses at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals (MCVH) in Richmond, Virginia, use the Newborn Maturity Rating and Classification Tool to identify high risk infants. An estimate of gestational age is made and using this estimate, weight, length, and head circumference measurements are plotted on graphs on the tool to determine if the infant achieves intrauterine growth smaller, larger or equal to gestational age.

The data used to generate the graphs on the Newborn Maturity Rating and Classification Tool were collected in Colorado during the 1950's. Two nurses at MCVH questioned the use of these graphs. They wanted to know …

An Empirical Investigation Of A Choice Of Accounting Method For Investments By Colleges And Universities: Positive Accounting Theory Applied In A Not-For-Profit Environment, Bruce W. Chase Jan 1991

An Empirical Investigation Of A Choice Of Accounting Method For Investments By Colleges And Universities: Positive Accounting Theory Applied In A Not-For-Profit Environment, Bruce W. Chase

Theses and Dissertations

The reasons why managers make certain accounting method choices have been explored by accounting researchers for some time. For over ten years, much of this research has been driven by positive accounting theory, which is based on the underlying assumption that managers act rationally to maximize their own personal wealth when making accounting method choices. This study is an initial attempt to extend positive accounting theory research to a not-for-profit setting; specifically, the choice of accounting method for endowment investments by colleges and universities is examined.

The three objectives of this study are: 1) to determine if the findings of …

Identification Of Dq Alpha Polymorphism Using The Polymerase Chain Reaction, Richard Mello Jan 1991

Identification Of Dq Alpha Polymorphism Using The Polymerase Chain Reaction, Richard Mello

Theses and Dissertations

This was a study of detection systems for DQ alpha HLA polymorphism that could be exploited for the demonstration of simulated chimerism. Polymorphic segments of DO alpha DNA were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Simulated chimerism was represented by a mixture of minor and major component DNA. The goal was to detect minor component DNA in the presence of major component DNA utilizing various laboratory techniques. Techniques studied included probe strip typing with the AmpliType HLA-DO Alpha test kit, allele-specific amplification, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, restriction enzymes, and Southern transfer combined with a peroxidase detection system.

The AmpliType HLA-DO …

The Effects Of Concentric And Eccentric Contractions Performed At Equal Power Levels On Skeletal Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy, Thomas Philip Mayhew Jan 1991

The Effects Of Concentric And Eccentric Contractions Performed At Equal Power Levels On Skeletal Muscle Fiber Hypertrophy, Thomas Philip Mayhew

Theses and Dissertations

There are no data available as to whether training with eccentric contractions are more effective than concentric contractions for producing skeletal muscle fiber hypertrophy. To better understand the effects of training with different contraction types two related studies were performed.

In the first study a device which is frequently used by clinicians for concentric and eccentric exercise, the Kin-ComR, was tested for accuracy and reliability. The measurements obtained from the force, angle, and speed transducers of this device were found to be accurate and reliable between days.

The purpose of the second study was to determine if there …

Effects Of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin (Tcdd) On The In Vitro Antibody Response: Differential Effects On The B Lymphocyte Depending On The State Of In Vivo Activation And The Modulation By Serum-Derived Growth Factors, Dale L. Morris Jan 1991

Morris

Theses and Dissertations

Previous reports have indicated a dichotomy in the actions of TCDD on humoral immunity, both in vitro and in vitro, in which enhancements and suppression have been identified. The latter effect has been correlated with induction of liver P4501A1 enzyme activity, a response which is regulated by the Ah-gene locus. Additionally, the primary alteration in suppression of antibody responses is in the differentiation of the B cell. Therefore, the current investigation was undertaken to determine the relationship between these dual actions of TCDD on humoral immunity as related to its direct actions on B lymphocyte function. Specific emphasis was placed …

Perceptual And Cognitive Abnormality Model Of Hypochondriasis: Psychological Correlates Of Amplification And Misinterpretation, James R. Craft Jan 1991

Perceptual And Cognitive Abnormality Model Of Hypochondriasis: Psychological Correlates Of Amplification And Misinterpretation, James R. Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Hypochondriasis is a disorder that may affect ten percent of all individuals seeking medical care. This places a great burden on the health care resources that are currently available. Unfortunately, very few of these individuals come to the attention of mental health professionals.

Various models have attempted to conceptualize hypochondriasis. These include the psychiatric model, the psychodynamic model, the social learning and the perceptual or cognitive abnormality model.

The perceptual or cognitive abnormality model suggests that individuals who are hypochondriacal misinterpret and/or amplify normal bodily sensations. These processes lead the individuals to believe they are suffering from a serious disease. …

The Effects Of Carboxyl-Group Specific Modification And Triiodo-L-Thyronine On Cardiac Sodium Channels, Samuel C. Dudley Jan 1991

The Effects Of Carboxyl-Group Specific Modification And Triiodo-L-Thyronine On Cardiac Sodium Channels, Samuel C. Dudley

Theses and Dissertations

The patch clamp method was used to evaluate the effects of 3,5,3'-triiodo-L-thyronine (T3) and carboxyl modification on adult rabbit ventricular Na+ channels. In contrast to TTX-sensitive Na+ channels, Ca2+ block of cardiac Na+ channels was not prevented by selective carboxyl modification by trimethyloxonium (TMO) or water soluble carbodiimide (WSC). In 2 mM Ca2+, TMO-treated patches exhibited 3 discrete conductance (γNa) levels. An abbreviation of mean open time (MOT) accompanied each decrease in γNa. The effects on channel gating of elevating external Ca2+ differed from those of TMO …

Vcu Voice (1990-12-14)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.
