Vcu Voice (1991-03-22)
VCU Voice, 1988-1998
VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Efficacy And Cost-Effectiveness Of Adjuvant Chemotherapy In Women With Node-Negative Breast-Cancer - A Decision-Analysis Model, Bruce E. Hillner , M.D., Thimas J. Smith M. D.
Internal Medicine Publications
BACKGROUND.
In 1988 the National Cancer Institute issued a Clinical Alert that has been widely interpreted as recommending that all women with node-negative breast cancer receive adjuvant chemotherapy. Acceptance of this recommendation is controversial, since many women who would not have a recurrence would be treated.
METHODS.
Using a decision-analysis model, we studied the cost effectiveness of chemotherapy in cohorts of 45-year-old and 60-year-old women with node-negative breast cancer by calculating life expectancy as adjusted for quality of life. The analysis evaluated different scenarios of the benefit of therapy: improved disease-free survival for five years, with a lesser effect on …

The impact of renal insufficiency on the dispositions of 300 mg of orally administered ceftibuten-cis, a new broad-spectrum oral cephalosporin, and its primary metabolite ceftibuten-trans was characterized in 30 adult subjects. Subjects were divided into five groups of six subjects each on the basis of their 24-h ambulatory creatinine clearances (CLCR). The apparent total body clearance (CLP/F; where F is absolute bioavailability) and renal clearance of ceftibuten-cis were significantly lower in subjects with end-stage renal disease (on maintenance hemodialysis; group V) and in those with severe (CLCR, 5 …

[Review Of] Troy Duster. Backdoor To Eugenics, Steven J. Gold
[Review Of] Troy Duster. Backdoor To Eugenics, Steven J. Gold
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
During the first decades of this century, the theory of eugenics, which applied social Darwinism to human beings, was an influential movement. Its major contention was that Northern Europeans were genetically superior to other groups-Southern and Eastern Europeans, Asians, blacks and Jews. Therefore, the presence of these "inferior" groups in the U.S. should be limited, both by constraining the growth of their populations and by restricting their entry into the nation. Rooted in "science," eugenics was embraced by prominent intellectuals of the era, including Harvard psychologist William McDougall and University of Wisconsin sociologist E. A. Ross. The power of this …
