The following abstracts and respondent comments reflect the variety of responses to the Conference theme "Visions and Revisions" and suggest the multiple ways in which participants approached both the pedagogical and theoretical aspects of ethnic studies.

The standard academic presentation on the topic of power rarely alludes to the elderly, ethnic groups, or to females of any age or race. The cultural history of humankind has been one of gross inequities in the distribution of power, and much of this distributional variance has been attributable to the categories of race, gender, and age. When these categories overlap, the impact on individual access to power has been, and continues to be, the greatest.

Transforming the Past is a major contribution to our understanding of Japanese American experience specifically and to our sense of ethnic experience generally. Yanagisako's study transcends its anthropological base to offer crucial insights previously precluded by both facile “understanding" and methological [methodological] limitations.

[Review Of] Isobel White, Diane Barwick, And Betty Meehan, Eds. Fighters And Singers: The Lives Of Some Aboriginal Women, Gretchen M. Bataille

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Fighters and Singers is a collection of fifteen essays written about Aboriginal women of Australia. The authors, mostly anthropologists and all women, wrote of their "sisters," "mothers," and "aunts." The pieces are all informative about tribal life, but they are also warm reminiscences of relationships across cultural boundaries. Among the contributors is Pearl Duncan, the first Aborigine to become a trained teacher in Australia and a former member of the National Aboriginal Education Committee.

Zbaracki's article is a pleasure to read because its style reflects the major theme of comparing the childrearing practices of two cultures. It is informative enough in detail to relate directly to the supportive literature. The author clearly shows her concern for the issues she raises and her empathy and dedication to her colleagues and the Southeast Asians with whom she works. She states her objective for the article and smoothly pleads her case for the need to understand the problems refugee Southeast Asians face in rearing their children in a strange land filled with strange faces and strange customs.

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Studies in American Indian Literature edited by Paula Gunn Allen is an excellent literary survey and resource book for instructors interested in developing college level courses on American Indians. Allen develops the format by including "critical studies in American Indian literature that explain and/or use basic themes, motifs, structures, and symbols found in traditional and modern American Indian literature." These critical essays lead into course outlines for developing American Indian classes.

It seems clear that art educators must think clearly about the design of teacher education programs if social theory is to become social practice. The obstacles to successful integration of theory and practice are many, ranging from the logistics of engaging artist-teachers in theoretical studies, to the intrinsically different natures of theoretical and practical activities. And it is difficult to guarantee that such amorphous qualities as flexible dialogue, love, hope, and mutual trust can be made part of a teacher education program, even when a deliberate effort is made to do so. VCU Today, 1972-1988

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

Educating Artistic Vision is an "old" book written a decade ago. As such there are many aspects in it, I'm sure, Eisner would not accept today. Therefore, the critique is made by keeping his later works, particularly The Educational Imagination (1979), in mind. To begin, Eisner claims that there are two major justifications for the teaching of art, both of which he presents in an either/or fashion. First a contextualist justification is made by claiming that art satisfies social needs. This article is concerned with the retention of minority undergraduate students, offering recommendations which contribute to a higher rate of student retention in postsecondary institutions. The first section provides a brief introduction to the state-of-the-art concerning attrition and retention. The development of a retention program for minority students comprises the second, more comprehensive section. It provides a listing of resources concerned with the problem. Concluding recommendations are presented which can contribute to the successful retention of minority students.

The findings of Professor Reinhardt as they relate to his survey of the image of homosexuals in Chicano prose fiction are interesting and informative, but not surprising given the "macho" mental set often associated with this culture. His first two points, which seem to hold about the homosexual in contemporary society, also seem to be the viewpoint held by most Americans. In other words, a lack of tolerance towards the homosexual is not unique to Chicanos. As for the fact that Chicanos are ignored in writings which have homosexuality as a theme, this probably stems from the tendency for writers …

There is contradictory evidence as to whether the middle years are problematic for women. The research indicates that the middle years, particularly the empty nest period, are traumatic for some women, but for others a time of relief. More recent research suggests that for women who do find the middle years problematic, certain types of group experiences may be helpful. The purpose of this study was to investigate this time of life for a specific population of women, traditional married women who have devoted their time primarily to raising a family. Prior to receiving Ms. Valentine's book, Hustling and Other Hard Work, this reviewer felt a sense of pessimism. That is, here is another book trying to clarify black folk's problems. This pessimistic sense is especially acute during this time when the label “minority” is still being used to lump millions of people together when their cultural-racial diversity defies such grouping. (This minority grouping oftentimes serves as a comment label or package for old racist attitudes and stereotypes.)

Varying techniques of measurement coupled with lack of sufficient data have presented great difficulties in the comparison of dental arch dimensions obtained by different workers. Several authors have attempted to delineate the arches. Lavelle et al measured the dental arches of adults from several different ethnic groups and found little difference between the modern British Caucasian, Australian aborigines, and North American Indians. They did, however, see considerable differences between these modern populations and a group of Anglo-Saxons and a group of West Africans.

This Peruvian-American cooperative study of paleopathology of the pre-Columbian Peruvian cultures of Southern Peru began in 1971. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the medical and dental health status of these cultures which date from 600 BC to the Spanish conquest. While several authors such as Leigh, Moodie, Stewart, and Goaz and Miller have studied the dental morphology of Northern Peruvians, the paleodontology and oral paleopathology of the Southern Peruvians has not been recorded. This paper reports dental findings on the morphologic characteristics of the shovel-shaped incisor, Carabelli’s cusp, and protostylid.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) analyses were used to assess on a molecular level, the relationships among representatives of the genera Streptomyces, Nocardia and Mycobacterium. The methods developed in this study have been used for routine analysis of DNA from a large number of actinomycetes and have given reliable and reproducible data.

DNA isolated from various actinomycetes was characterized by buoyant density determinations in CsCl from which the mole fraction guanine plus cytosine (GC) content was calculated. All the streptomycete DNA preparations studied had buoyant densities in the range of 1.7287 to 1.7312 g cm^-3 which corresponded to GC compositions of …

A Tissue Culture Perfusion Chamber With A Substratum Of Reconstituted Collagen, Thomas M. Harris

A tissue culture chamber is described that introduces the concept of a fixed platform within a "perfusion type" chamber. The platform is made of stainless steel mesh covered with a membrane of reconstituted collagen. The collagen membrane serves as the supporting substratum for the cultured tissue and is of such an optical quality as to permit phase-contrast microscopic observation of the tissue. The perfusion chamber is a Sykes-Moore tissue culture chamber modified to twice its normal depth to receive the screen. Cell growth in the experimental chamber is superior to growth in the control chamber both in speed of proliferation …
