Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey Jan 1994

Art, Education, Work, And Leisure: Tangles In The Lifelong Learning Network, Lara M. Lackey

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Although the field of art education has, in recent years, acknowledged the prevalence of non-formal educational sites, our literature is divided on whether this trend poses an opportunity for cooperation and strength or a threat to the status of art as a school subject. This paper consults the literature of critical theory within the domains of art, education, and leisure studies in order to examine the relationship between formal and non-formal art education. First, it considers ways in which tradition conceptualizations of art, education, leisure, and work foster an acceptance of art as experience and knowledge to be gained outside …

Review Essay: "Arthur M. Schlesinger's Vision Of America And The Multicultural Debate" By Jesse M. Vazquez, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In April of 1990, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., published an essay in the Wall Street Journal entitled "When Ethnic Studies are Un-American."[1] The publication of that article followed, by about eight months, the release of New York State's Department of Education's now controversial report -- "A Curriculum of Inclusion."[2] Interestingly, the publication of The Disuniting of America: Reflections on a Multicultural Society also follows, by about seven months, the release of New York State's second and most current Education Department report calling for the development of a new multicultural social studies curriculum -- One Nation, Many Peoples: A Declaration of …

[Review Of] University Of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian. Women, Race, And Ethnicity: A Bibliography, Laurie Lisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Women, Race, and Ethnicity had its origin in a series of reading lists prepared by the office of the University of Wisconsin System Women's Studies Librarian in the mid-1980s; this newest edition supersedes an earlier June 1988 release. Containing almost 2500 sources, this volume provides a selective, annotated list of college-level print (including special journal issues and chapters in anthologies) and audiovisual resources, emphasizing recent materials on ethnic women in the United States (only a few Canadian materials are included). References are classified under twenty-eight disciplines and topics -- such as Anthropology, Education, Literature, Poetry, and Psychology -- and further …

The War Of Labels: An Art Educator In Search Of A Sign, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 1993

The War Of Labels: An Art Educator In Search Of A Sign, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

I recently had the occasion to go shopping with my twelve year old son Jeremy who is now finishing grade seven in a Canadian public school. He had somehow (mysteriously) saved twenty dollars and was determined to buy a T-shirt. Coming from the boomer generation, T-shirts for me where either those funny Stanfield undergarments that my dad wore under his dress shirt (to absorb the sweat during hard work, I suppose?) or what gang members with duck-tails in the '50s wore under their leather jackets to look cool-like the 'Fonz' of Happy Days. During my college art school days, the …

[Review Of] Cheryl A. Wall, Ed. Changing Our Own Words: Essays On Criticism, Theory, And Writing By Black Women, Angela M. S. Nelson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Cheryl Wall's edited volume, Changing Our Own Words, is comprised of the proceedings of a conference held at Rutgers University in October 1987 entitled "Changing Our Own Words: A Symposium on Criticism, Theory, and Literature by Black Women." A group of scholars and critics -- who included Abena P. A. Busia, Barbara Christian, Mae Gwendolyn Henderson, Gloria T. Bull, Deborah E. McDowell, Valerie Smith, Hortense J. Spillers, Claudia Tate, Cheryl A. Wall, and Susan Willis -- were asked to reflect upon such questions as: What are the most fruitful contexts for the analysis of writing by black women? What can …

Vcu Voice (1991-05-03)

VCU Voice, 1988-1998

VCU Today, the University’s first official administrative organ, began as a somewhat irregular monthly publication but moved to a bi-weekly newspaper format in the 1980s. The newspaper changed its name to VCU Voice in 1988 and ten years later it appeared under the title UniverCity News. As it neared the end of its run as a physical newspaper, the publication became simply VCU News. These four publications were essentially the same periodical published under different titles by the Office of University Relations. VCU News appeared online for the first time in 2002.

[Review Of] Miriam Makeba And James Hall. Makeba: My Story, Nancy Hellner Jan 1991

[Review Of] Miriam Makeba And James Hall. Makeba: My Story, Nancy Hellner

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Like much of her music, Miriam Makeba's autobiography is both personal and political. As it details the story of a young girl's coming of age and search for identity, it simultaneously records the history of a country struggling for independence. In the prologue, Makeba compares herself to a South African bird soaring above the horror of apartheid (aparthood) which was instituted in 1947. As she recounts the details of war and injustice in direct, understated, idiom-filled prose, and as she intertwines details of ancient customs with the realities of modern technology, Makeba suggests that music best expresses the tragic subject …

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems Jan 1991

Ethnic Education: A Clash Of Cultures In Progressive Chicago, Gerald R. Gems

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The City of Chicago recently embarked upon a pioneering effort to transform the quality of its public school system. The concept of decentralization that allows for neighborhood councils, greater decision-making at the local level, and increased parental involvement in the schools is not a new one. Similar governance structures of a century ago fell victim to class and ethnic factionalism. The progressive vision of a homogenous society assumed a passive clientele and a consensus culture. Particular educational programs brought diverse groups closer to the mainstream, but the resultant mass culture accommodated pluralistic values rather than the sought-after homogeneity.

[Review Of] Trinh T. Minh-Ha. Woman, Native, Other: Writing Postcoloniality And Feminism, Patricia Grimshaw Jan 1991

[Review Of] Trinh T. Minh-Ha. Woman, Native, Other: Writing Postcoloniality And Feminism, Patricia Grimshaw

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In Woman, Native, Other, Trinh T. Minh-ha has taken on an ambitious task, which is to explain something of the problems confronting non-Western women writers who publish and are subjected to critiques within the established paradigms of Western scholarly discourses. Must she and her fellows position themselves as "writer of color," "woman writer," or "woman of color," she asks, as she proceeds to display the boundaries others place upon their freedom to create their own realities and establish their distinctive voices. Whereas other women theorists of postcolonialism and feminism have challenged Western-conventions largely within the linguistic and stylistic conventions of …

[Review Of] Vi Hilbert, Tr. And Ed. Haboo: Native American Stories From Puget Sound, James Ruppert Jan 1989

[Review Of] Vi Hilbert, Tr. And Ed. Haboo: Native American Stories From Puget Sound, James Ruppert

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Vi Hilbert, a Skagit Indian of the Northern Lushootseed of Western Washington, has collected and edited thirty-three fine examples of Salish oral literature. As an instructor in Lushootseed Salish language and literature at the University of Washington, she has had excellent opportunities to collect material and work out a presentational form in English. This volume collects stories from the Myth Age with special emphasis on Raven, Mink and Coyote stories. These stories, largely "light and humorous," explore the actions of beings with human and animal characteristics who existed before the world was transformed into the world we see today. Hilbert …

[Review Of] Swami Nitya-Swarup-Ananda, Education For Human Unity And World Civilization, Margaret Bedrosian Jan 1989

[Review Of] Swami Nitya-Swarup-Ananda, Education For Human Unity And World Civilization, Margaret Bedrosian

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This work is of interest to any in ethnic studies for it outlines the need and process of establishing a new order of education which would serve the needs of cultural integrity and world unity. This latest version of Swami Nitya-Swarup-Ananda's description of such an education, published in 1986, is the culmination of decades of thought and observation by the author, who founded the Ramakrishna Institute of Culture in Calcutta. The Swami has also worked closely with UNESCO in furthering the aims of worldwide cultural education which would promote planetary diversity at the same time that it promotes world harmony.

Toward Foundations For A Socially Critical Art Education, Paul Duncum Jan 1989

Toward Foundations For A Socially Critical Art Education, Paul Duncum

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Significant recent developments in Australian art education have moved away from a consideration of the aesthetic value of fine art products to a broad sociological conception of the visual arts which includes folk and popular arts. Many art educators assume a socially functionalist approach which celebrates cultural diversity and attempts to describe the function of cultural artifacts, sometimes in terms of lived experience. While acknowledging the importance of these developments, the author adopts the view that cultural production is part of an unjust society in ferment and is a site of ideological struggle. The view advanced is that to be …

Dbae And Clae: Relevance For Minority And Multicultural Students, Barbara Boyer

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The importance of art programming which reflects, and is responsive to the diverse needs of students in a multicultural society is examined. It is argued that the DBAE fails to consider the increasing diversity among the population of our schools in the prescription of standardized and achievement oriented curricula. It is further claimed that CLAE offers an alternative to DBAE which promotes sensitivity to the cultural make-up of our classrooms.

Biochemical Characterization Of The Axolemmal Mitogen For Cultured Schwann Cells, Mark A. Decoster Jan 1989

Biochemical Characterization Of The Axolemmal Mitogen For Cultured Schwann Cells, Mark A. Decoster

Theses and Dissertations

The molecule(s) involved at the axon plasma membrane (axolemma) which causes Schwann cells to proliferate has been investigated by three biochemical techniques: 1) Alkaline extraction of axolemma resulted in recovery of 95% of the mitogenic activity and 50% of the protein in the membrane-bound portion of the axolemma. 2) The axonal mitogen for Schwann cells may be associated with heparan sulfate proteoglycans at the axonal surface. Treatment of axolemma with heparitinase, which cleaves the glycosidic bonds of sulfated glycosaminoglycans, allowed mitogenic activity to be solubilized. 3) Treatment of axolemma with heparin, a highly sulfated glycosaminoglycan analogous to heparan sulfate, resulted …

Cyanonews (Vol. 4, No. 3, December 1988), Jeff Elhai

CyanoNews

CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez Jan 1988

The Co-Opting Of Ethnic Studies In The American University: A Critical View, Jesse M. Vazquez

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The birth of ethnic studies in the American university was accompanied by the politics and pedagogy of rage, pride, and mistrust for the then prevailing curricular academic structures and its tradition-bound, academically conservative gatekeepers. The campus take-overs, student demands, and confrontations were a common expression of the times, and concomitantly these were also shapers of the changing times. The presence or absence of ethnic minority faculty and students in our universities was and continues to be one of many indices by which we measure the willingness of this society to live up to its responsibility and promise to guarantee expanding …

[Review Of] William K. Powers. Beyond The Vision: Essays On American Indian Culture, Richard F. Fleck Jan 1988

[Review Of] William K. Powers. Beyond The Vision: Essays On American Indian Culture, Richard F. Fleck

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Powers' collection of seven essays (mostly about Lakota culture) is of great value to students of Native American Studies. They vary in approach and topic from ethnomusicology to art, religion, and psychology. In his preface Powers pays tribute to Levi-Strauss' structuralist theory and its usefulness to American Indian cultural studies. But Powers qualifies his tribute by suggesting that because structuralism has its limitations, eclecticism is more appropriate for his purposes.

Art, Football And The Politics Of Recognition, Pete Helzer, Helen Liggett Jan 1988

Art, Football And The Politics Of Recognition, Pete Helzer, Helen Liggett

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Richard Brown, Professor of Art History at Pacific Lutheran University, recently published an article synoptically titled "Regionalism, a Tenacious Myth.” Most surprising was that it appeared in Signature, a low budget Northwest arts newspaper out of Seattle, Washington. The appeal of Signature is its plebeian accessibility: descriptive reviews, pragmatic advice on competitions, personality profiles, and an unpretentious gallery guide. For example, it is the perfect place to find the latest word on the Snohomish County Craft Guild. In the differentiation between theory and practice, Signature represented the voice of practice, that is, until Professor Brown's theory piece let down the …

[Review Of] Wen-Shing Tseng And David Y. H. Wu, Eds. Chinese Culture And Mental Health, Ella P. Lacey

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Tseng and Wu have performed a creditable task in editing this book that involved twenty-nine delegates from the Conference on Chinese Culture and Mental Health (Hawaii, 1982). Their purpose was to have "insiders" produce a definitive work on the Chinese culture and its interaction with the mental component of health. The Chinese are described in the preface as "having a history of at least 5000 years of civilization," with China comprising "... one quarter of the world's people," but having people of the Chinese culture who live in various geographical areas, including "... Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, …
