The Affect That Injuries Can Have On Collegiate Athletes Mental Health, Emily Dority
The Affect That Injuries Can Have On Collegiate Athletes Mental Health, Emily Dority
Student Research Symposium
This presentation provides research that answers the question of whether injuries affect collegiate athletes mentally. College athletes have a lot of mental challenges that they deal with behind the scenes. If an injury were to occur, the amount of stress and anxiety that the athlete feels would significantly increase. This research aims to determine if universities and colleges are providing the proper mental health resources to their student-athletes who have been affected by an injury. This research was conducted by reviewing both primary and secondary sources that provided first-hand accounts from collegiate athletes who struggled with their mental health after …
Historic Buildings: The Impact On Sustainability And Design, Sierra Stuart
Historic Buildings: The Impact On Sustainability And Design, Sierra Stuart
Student Research Symposium
Historic districts or buildings are commonly found in many cities or towns and are often associated with a charming feel, but there is so much more. They hold hidden values and stories that play a role in each space. Historic buildings greatly impact sustainability by reducing material consumption and energy that could have been used to tear down a building and build a new one. Creating a sustainable space may look like restoring windows, adding insulation, and specifying durable furniture and furnishings with the space. When historic buildings are designed with a careful and knowledgeable mind, they can add to …

HOMES has utilized creative methods to bolster the economy of Letcher County including providing energy-efficient rental …
Bodies Of Beauty, Tyaira Mackay
Bodies Of Beauty, Tyaira Mackay
Student Research Symposium
The rates of eating disorder diagnoses amongst young people in the United States has gradually increased, while beauty standards have gained more prevalence. These beauty standards have become more unrealistic and glorify frail, stick-like bodies. This research aims to discover if there is any correlation between these unhealthy standards and the development and diagnosis of eating disorders. To conduct my research, I used library and internet sources to gather a pool of primary and secondary sources. I used sources by underrepresented scholars concerning different body standards as well as information given by eating disorder clinics to gain a better understanding …
Recidivism And Interventions: A Measure Of The Effectiveness Of The Criminal Justice System, Andelin Hutchings
Recidivism And Interventions: A Measure Of The Effectiveness Of The Criminal Justice System, Andelin Hutchings
Student Research Symposium
Looking at the rates of recidivism in the United States is a valuable piece of information that we can use to determine the effectiveness of our criminal justice system. When I evaluated the information we currently have, I found that our rate of recidivism is among the highest in developed nations, at around 76.6%. My objective was to investigate the current programs and interventions already in place in order to determine the efficacy of those interventions in reducing recidivism. In order to do this, I read many different peer-reviewed articles, making sure to pull from Marginalized and Underrepresented Scholars. After …
Impacts Of Cftr Mutations On Pulmonary Development In Sheep, Kaden Bunch
Impacts Of Cftr Mutations On Pulmonary Development In Sheep, Kaden Bunch
Student Research Symposium
Due to various mutations, the loss of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) function causes cystic fibrosis (CF), predisposing the lungs to chronic infection and inflammation. In young infants with CF, structural airway defects are increasingly recognized before the onset of significant lung disease, which suggests a developmental origin and a possible role in lung disease pathogenesis. The function of CFTR in lung development is unclear and developmental studies in humans with CF are not feasible. Young CF sheep show similar lung development and spontaneous postnatal lung disease similar to humans impacted by CF. We studied lung development in the …
Balance Recovery Time Was Different Across Age Groups, Cody Overson
Balance Recovery Time Was Different Across Age Groups, Cody Overson
Student Research Symposium
Falls can take a serious toll on the quality of life and independence of daily activities. Among falls, forward falls are the most common fall direction. To prevent forward falls, compensatory steps and change-in-support reactions (e.g., foot contact) are critical for stabilizing after unanticipated, balance disturbances. The purpose was to determine if the time to stabilize varied across ages. Participants were grouped into three age groups (18-24, 25-33, and 40-58 years old). Participants performed 24 forward perturbation trials. Time to stabilize was evaluated as the time from their foot contacted the front force place to when the net anterior-posterior (AP) …
Strawberry High Tunnel Effects On Different Forms Of Soil Nitrogen, Mark Kindred
Strawberry High Tunnel Effects On Different Forms Of Soil Nitrogen, Mark Kindred
Student Research Symposium
Nitrogen is an important component of plant nutrition. However, nitrogen in the soil comes in many different forms including some proteins, amino acids, and mineral nitrogen. Not all of these forms are available to plants. Things that affect the availability of nitrogen are temperature, moisture, and chemical composition of the material. It is difficult for organic farmers sourcing nitrogen because of low nitrogen content and availability from organic sources. However some plants can better utilize organic forms of nitrogen when it is available. This experiment examines how temperature affects different forms of inorganic and organic nitrogen. Additionally, it will explore …
Does Cannabidiol Affect The Physical Properties Of Anhydrous Milk Fat And Palm Kernel Oil?, Joseph Cooney
Does Cannabidiol Affect The Physical Properties Of Anhydrous Milk Fat And Palm Kernel Oil?, Joseph Cooney
Student Research Symposium
As cannabidiol (CBD) is added to more and more foods, it becomes increasingly important to study the effects that this CBD has on the physical properties of the lipids in which they are dissolved, which is the objective of this study. The viscosity, hardness, melting profile, crystal size, and solidification over time are studied for anhydrous milk fat (AMF) and palm kernel oil (PKO). Concentrations by mass of 1% and 2.5% CBD are added to each lipid, and these concentrations are tested against a pure lipid control. AMF is crystallized at 26 C, and PKO is crystallized at 22 C …
Mother-Daughter Relationships In Latin American Immigrant Households, Megan Updike
Mother-Daughter Relationships In Latin American Immigrant Households, Megan Updike
Student Research Symposium
The life of an immigrant is challenging and characterized by trauma, experienced from the political, economic, and/or violent turmoil that compelled them to leave their homelands and the discrimination, cultural shock, and other physical or emotional obstacles that they experience in their new home. Many Latin American authors utilize their writing to share their personal experiences as immigrants of first or second generation in the United States, as well as express the trauma that is shared between them and their families. As the multi-generational dynamic of gender roles and trauma in the immigrant family is analyzed, a recurring theme of …
Becoming A Poet: The Moment Of Metamorphosis, Lauren Mckinnon
Becoming A Poet: The Moment Of Metamorphosis, Lauren Mckinnon
Student Research Symposium
The moment a writer qualifies for the title of poet is undetermined. To gauge if such a moment exists, I launched a mixed method study comparing the perspectives of different published poets. During my study, I interviewed three Cache Valley poets who have their own published books of poetry. In addition, sixteen Utah State University creative writing contest winners were surveyed. My study aims to i) determine the extent to which we can say that there is a decisive moment of change when an individual becomes a poet; and ii) identify the key factors which constitute this shift in identity—sudden …
Kanak Culture Of New Caledonia, Tessa Thornley Blackham
Kanak Culture Of New Caledonia, Tessa Thornley Blackham
Student Research Symposium
This study focuses on New Caledonia poet, Déwé Gorodey (or Gorodé), and her writings. New Caledonia, a territory of France, is an island in the Pacific Ocean. The island was colonized in the mid-1800s, affecting the Melanesian natives. The natives are more commonly known as Kanaks and have seen years of repression under the French regime. Because of government intervention, most of the Kanak “coutume” (custom in French) has been limited. The coutume is an almost intangible presence of Kanaky culture, affecting their everyday life and decision. Déwé Gorodey was a prominent political figure during years of unrest. Most of …
Language Revitalization: Strategies To Reverse Language Shift, Jessica Martin
Language Revitalization: Strategies To Reverse Language Shift, Jessica Martin
Student Research Symposium
Language shift, the process by which a language loses speakers until it becomes extinct, is occurring in speech communities all over the world. This process is influenced by internal and external political, social, and economic factors unique to each community. As its causes and effects are not uniform, a universal model for reversing language shift does not exist. However, several broad principles can be applied across multiple contexts and situations for successful language revitalization. It is essential for the speech community to be the primary decision maker in any program. A thorough assessment of the community’s current status, challenges, and …

Our project is entitled Muses: Finding Women’s Voices. This creative project used museum theatre to highlight and celebrate the work of different female artists in the surrealstic art form. The International Museum Theatre Alliance defines museum theatre as “a term that has been used to refer both to the performance of theatre (i.e. a play) in or by a museum and also to the use of any of a variety of theatrical techniques by museums.” (IMTAL). Museum theatre is a way to enhance the overall educational message of a museum. For this project, we partnered with the Nora Eccles Harrison …
Is Parental Encouragement (As Measured By Piccolo) During Toddlerhood Correlated With High-Risk Behaviors In 5Th Grade? Are These Correlations Different For First-Born Children Versus Children With Older Siblings?, Jocelyn Meyers
Student Research Symposium
Children need support through healthy, positive relationships with adults, but they also need room to grow, learn, and slowly gain independence. The PICCOLO User's guide defines Encouragement as an “Active support of exploration, effort, skills, initiative, curiosity, creativity, and play” (Roggman, et.al., 2013). Parental support and encouragement of autonomy is correlated with better development of self-regulation and brain development, and can even influence executive functioning and parent-child relationships (Bernier, et al., 2010). Studies have already shown that proper encouragement in early childhood is linked to healthy development, Ispa, et al. (2004) found that maternal intrusiveness or lack of encouragement and …
Hidden Symmetries In Black Holes, Luis Fernando Temoche
Hidden Symmetries In Black Holes, Luis Fernando Temoche
Student Research Symposium
Our objective is to show the existence of conformal symmetries in rotating black hole solutions near its event horizon. To do so, we are going to study the cases of both Kerr BH and 5D Myers-Perry BH. In particular, by applying certain coordinate transformations, we will be able exploit this conformal invariance from its geometry as well as the dynamics of scalar fields propagating on this particular background. The invariance allows as to describe strongly coupled systems, conformal field theories to be specific, in lower dimensions.
Care, Wellness, And Mindful Movement: Supporting The Needs Of Educators And Students During Challenging Times, Ashlyn Birchell
Care, Wellness, And Mindful Movement: Supporting The Needs Of Educators And Students During Challenging Times, Ashlyn Birchell
Student Research Symposium
Studies have shown that teachers who implement social emotional learning (SEL) and wellness practices have improved attitudes, show more engagement with students, families and colleagues, and demonstrate increased educational efficacy. The challenge teachers often face is that they are required to do so much that their own wellness practices may take a back seat. Additionally, since the start of the global pandemic, teachers and students have had to learn to repeatedly shift on the fly for health and safety reasons. This draws even more attention to the importance of promoting self-care as a form of community care. Previous literature reveals …
Not Your Grandma's Kitchen: Recipe Cards In The Digital Age, Emily Powell
Not Your Grandma's Kitchen: Recipe Cards In The Digital Age, Emily Powell
Student Research Symposium
With the rise in popularity of food bloggers and social media chefs, how do recipe cards function in a digital age? Although scholarly literature addresses the history of cooking, little research focuses on the recipe card, its history, and its use. Originally, recipe cards were not intended to be kept or treasured as family heirlooms. They served purely functional purposes, acting as prompts to housewives when cooking meals and later to promote new technology and foods in the culinary industry. Even with the rise of the internet, many hold onto old recipe cards. This study looks at the history and …

Halotolerant Endophytes: Identification And Characterization Of Plant-Growth Promoting Microbes In Saline Conditions, Katherine Hewitt
Halotolerant Endophytes: Identification And Characterization Of Plant-Growth Promoting Microbes In Saline Conditions, Katherine Hewitt
Student Research Symposium
Part of a plant’s biosphere are endophytes, microbes found between the cells of a plant. Plant-microbe relations are integral to plant survival and crop productivity, and can be beneficial to help a plant cope with abiotic stressors such as salinity. Our soils in Utah are high in salinity due to topography and climate. Climate change has increased soil salinity worldwide, and water availability is becoming scarcer, leading agriculture to use more saline sources to irrigate. Thus, salt is a concern for farmers. We aim to identify halotolerant endophytes which can benefit plant health. Microbes were isolated from Ceanothus velutinus, Snowbrush, …

Isolation And Characterization Of Plant Growth Promoting Endophytic Bacteria From The Root Nodules Of Ceanothus Velutinus, Teja Sai Ellanki Narendra
Student Research Symposium
Ceanothus velutinusis an evergreen shrub native to the Intermountain West region of the US, commonly known as snowbrush. The center for water-efficient landscaping (CWEL) recommended this plant for sustainable landscaping as its moderately drought tolerant. The roots of these plants form an actinorhizal symbiotic relationship with Nitrogen fixing actinobacteria Frankia, which initiates root nodules formation. Besides, these plants also harbor Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) that help plants in nutrient uptake, plant hormone production, protecting the plants from ethylene stress, and production of metabolites, thus playing an essential role in plant growth and development. They can be used as biofertilizers to …
Transgenic Mice Demonstrate The Level Of Contribution Of Protein Cd38 To Nad+ Decline Seen In Human Aging, Abby Tucker
Transgenic Mice Demonstrate The Level Of Contribution Of Protein Cd38 To Nad+ Decline Seen In Human Aging, Abby Tucker
Student Research Symposium
Niacin (NAD+) is a a vital molecule in human metabolism. NAD+ decline with age is well documented and low NAD+ levels may cause aging symptoms, however the molecular cause of NAD+ decline is poorly understood. Few pathways in the human metabolism fully consume NAD+ as it is usually recycled to NADH. One protein found on immune cells, called CD38, does fully consume NAD+ in its reaction, and so it may contribute to niacin deficiency by depleting the NAD+ in the body over time. To determine CD38’s role in causing niacin deficiency and aging, we knocked out the CD38 gene in …
Finding Higher Order Interactions Using Local Corex, Thomas Kerby
Finding Higher Order Interactions Using Local Corex, Thomas Kerby
Student Research Symposium
In applications such as financial markets, social networks, and gene expression data, the variables often interact in complex ways. Yet accurately characterizing pairwise variable interactions can be a difficult task, let alone efficiently characterizing complex higher-order interactions, which is an unsolved problem. This difficulty is exacerbated when variable interactions change across the data. For example, gene interactions in single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data will typically differ from one cell type to another. To solve these problems, we propose a new method called Local Correlation Explanation (CorEx). Local CorEx captures higher-order variable interactions at a local scale by first clustering data points …
Analysis Of The Relationship Between Oxytocin Receptor Mutations, Oxytocin Receptor Binding And Autism, Ethan Dayley
Analysis Of The Relationship Between Oxytocin Receptor Mutations, Oxytocin Receptor Binding And Autism, Ethan Dayley
Student Research Symposium
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a common neurological disorder with a wide range of symptoms, many of them social in nature. Although there is a large body on research regarding ASD, up until now there is no gene-brain-behavior link that has shown the exact cause of ASD. In 2018, Dr. Sara Freeman's research showed differences in oxytocin receptor (OXTR) binding density in two brain regions between typically developing and ASD individuals. Here we show that about 50% of the variation seen in Dr. Freeman's study can be explained by genetic variations (single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) in the OXTR gene, …

Investigating Position 312 In Prmt1 For Future Fluorescent Labeling Studies, Sarah Nielson
Investigating Position 312 In Prmt1 For Future Fluorescent Labeling Studies, Sarah Nielson
Student Research Symposium
Protein arginine methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) is an enzyme that post-translationally methylates other proteins in the cell. These methylation events play critical roles in maintaining cellular health. Labeling PRMT1 site-specifically will enable further research in PRMT1 oligomeric state in vivo and can be applied in future fluorescent studies. The intention of this research was to identify a position to label PRMT1 that does not affect oligomerization or activity. Position 312 was chosen as the site for specific tagging as it will have less interference in oligomerization, minimizes free rotation of fluorescent tags, and is surface-exposed. To confirm that position 312 was …
