Physiological Investigations Of Two Strawberry Root Rot Fungi, Fusarium Orthoceras Ap. And Wr., And Cylindrocarpon Obtusisporum (Cke. And Hark.) Wr., Herbert B. Currier
Biology
During recent years strawberry growers in widespread areas have been concerned with losses attributed to a root disease commonly termed "Black Root Rot of Strawberries". This malady is especially severe in Utah. Richards and McKay (18)1 report that losses are such as to render commercial strawberry growing unprofitable in certain areas. These investigators found, in isolation studies of diseased strawberry roots, that the disease is evidently not due to the attack of a single pathogene, but that several fungi, each apparently capable in itself of producing infection, may act collectively in producing a "disease complex".

The Feeding Value Of Certain Duck Food Plants Of The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge As Determined By Chemical Analysis, Dale Clair Christensen
The Feeding Value Of Certain Duck Food Plants Of The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge As Determined By Chemical Analysis, Dale Clair Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The study of bird feeding problems has become a prominent factor in wild life management. This is true especially with respect to the evaluation of recently established migratory bird refuges. In 1929 the Federal Government assumed control of a large area of land located on the Bear River Bay of Great Salt Lake for the purpose of providing a sanctuary for water fowl. Dykes were built and the areas inside these dykes flooded with fresh water from Bear River. During subsequent years aquatic and marsh plants* developed abundantly and apparently have provided satisfactory feeding and nesting grounds for migratory birds. …

Past Trends Of Cooperative Marketing And Its Present Economic Status In Utah, Lamoine B. Christiansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The agricultural interests of the United States and Utah have experienced some trying situations during the past quarter century. Periods of depression followed by periods of expansion and prosperity have resulted in a condition of instability and insecurity in agriculture.
The effect of alternate periods of prosperity and depression in agriculture becomes increasingly important as agriculture changes from self-sufficing to commercialized types of business enterprises. Many of the difficulties inherent in the present complex social and capital structure were of minor significances in the early types of agricultural activities.
Changing conditions in agriculture and in social institutions in general have …

The Effect Of Different Methods Of Handling Chicken Manure On The Viability Of Weed Seed, Golden L. Stoker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is well known that weeds spread and are perpetuated by means of seed and vegetative reproduction. The seeds in turn are spread by various agencies such as wind, water, animals and man. These agencies are aided by especially adapted seed mechanisms for dissemination.

Biology Of The Green Soldier Bug, Acrosternum Hilaris (Say), At Farmington, Utah, Edward W. Anthon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was begun in June 1935, and continued up to and including the fall of 1937. The work was carried out at the Davis county Experiment Farm at Farmington, Utah, with some survey work also having been done in the central and northern parts of the state. This work was made possible through the cooperation of the Entomological and Horticultural Departments of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.
The green soldier bug, Acrosternum hilaris (Say), is also called the green stinkbug. Thomas Say was the first to describe this insect as belonging to the genus Pentatoma, but in some publications …
The Northwestern Shoshone Indians, (A) Under Tribal Organization And Government, (B) Under The Eccleastical Administration Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Exemplified At The Washakie Colony, Utah, Joshua T. Evans
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Northwestern Shoshone Indians is the tribe of Indians that inhabited the territory north of the Great Salt Lake comprising the northern part of Utah and the Southern part of Idaho. The Indians have loose boundary lines, yet we can definitely state that this tribe occupied the territory from the Weber river on the South to the Snake river on the North; from Bear Lake and Bear river on the East to Raft river and Goose creek on the West. Their confines would take in Weber, Rich, Box Elder, Cache, and part of Morgan, counties in Utah; and Bear Lake, …

A Critical Analysis Of Methods Of Securing Basic Irrigation Data Used In Water Right Determinations, A. Alvin Bishop
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Agriculture in the Western United States is almost entirely dependent upon irrigation. Irrigation has transformed the desert lands into fertile, producing valleys. It has made possible communities and settlement areas which would otherwise be impossible. Although the achievements of irrigation have been great, there still remains millions of acres of fertile land that will never be reclaimed because there is not available water.

Bulletin No. 279 - The Fruit Tree Situation In Utah, A. L. Wilson, A. L. Stark
UAES Bulletins
The fruit industry in Utah is not large when compared with the total production of the United States. The year 1935 was a favorable fruit season for Utah and yet the state produced only 0.54 percent of the United States' apple crop, 1.30 percent of the peach crop, 0.31 percent of the pears, and 3.72 percent of all cherries. Utah does, however, produce between 10 and 15 percent of all sweet cherries. Even though the Utah fruit industry represents such a small part of the national industry, a great many people of the state are dependent upon it, either wholly …

A History Of Fifty Years: 1888-1938, Joel Edward Ricks

For the past half century the Utah State Agricultural College has been making history without a history having been written. As the Semi .. Centennial year approached, the need of recording the outstanding events of the fifty years became imperative. This Institution, in the beginning, was established in the spirit of the Land Grant College Act of 1862-a spirit born in the gloom of military disaster and yet with rising hope and determination to preserve a Union which President Lincoln determined should "lift the burdens from the shoulders of all men." Each President of the College has stressed democracy and …

Bulletin No. 281 - Sorghums Varietal Tests In Utah, R. W. Woodward, D. C. Tingey, R. J. Evans
UAES Bulletins
Sorghums are not grown to any appreciable extent in Utah except in the Virgin River valley in the southwestern portion of the State. No experimental work on sorghum culture had been done prior to 1931 except on the dry land of Juab County near Nephi. Those early tests, discontinued after 1917, indicated that sorghums were poorly adapted to such conditions.
Numerous improved varieties have been produced since that time, some of which are adapted to relatively short growing seasons.
This bulletin will discuss the practicability of growing some of these varieties of sorghum in Utah and their economic value compared …

Bulletin No. 278 - Should Flax Be Grown In Utah, R. W. Woodward, D. C. Tingey, A. C. Dillman
UAES Bulletins
Flax has been considered as a possible crop for growing under irrigation in Utah because of its high acre return in some of the northern States. One of the functions of a State experiment station is to test new crops and varieties. A series of experiments , therefore, has been conducted in Utah to determine the yields of flax as compared with small grains both under irrigation and on dry lands. This bulletin report s a summary of the results of these experiments together with a discussion of comparative returns from flax and small grains.
Two types of flax, seed …

Bulletin No. 277 - A Study Of Utah's Winter Range: Composition Of Forage Plants And Use Of Supplements, A. C. Esplin, J. E. Greaves, L. A. Stoddart
UAES Bulletins
Range forage provides the foundation for the maintenance ration available for most sheep wintered in Utah. The nature and amount of supplemental concentrate or roughage needed with this forage to provide an adequate and efficient ration for sheep naturally depends on the nature and amount of range forage available. Present uncertainty as to the relative merits of the various available supplements originates largely through a lack of definite knowledge as to the composition and feeding value of the various range plants that go to make up the range-forage supply on the particular range in question.
