The Identification Of The Tomato Mosaic Virus Prevalent In Utah, Ross D. Watson
The Identification Of The Tomato Mosaic Virus Prevalent In Utah, Ross D. Watson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Collections of tomato mosaic virus obtained from Utah and California produce a localized severe leaf and stem necrosis on Datura meteloides. After the streaked plant has stood sufficiently long to permit secondary growth to occur, a systemic diseased expression develops in a few of the plants. No reference to a similar development on Datura meteloides following inoculation with the tobacco mosaic virus was found in the literature.

A Study Of The Equilibria Between Bentonite And The Various Replacing Agents In Alcoholic And Water Solutions, Joel E. Fletcher
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investigators in soils have long recognized the importance of the colloidal fraction of soil, and also the almost inseparable problem of replaceable bases. It is generally accepted that the replaceable base fraction of a colloid controls to a large degree the physical properties exhibited by it. Volumes of work have been written on the problem of controlling the reactions of this fraction and on studies of the properties exhibited by it when it is saturated with various cations. Each worker has proceeded in his own individual way or followed the example set by some previous worker with specific modifications.
An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson
An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Before presenting an economic analysis of farm tenure in the Uintah Basin, it will be helpful to consider some aspects of the historical, economic, and social background of that portion of the region included in this study.
A portion of the Uintah Indian Reservation, which was created in 1861, was opened to white settlement under the homestead and townsite laws on August 28, 1905 after 103,000 acres of farming land had been allotted to individual Indians living on the reservation and 276,000 acres reserved for Indian grazing lands and timber reserve.

The Relation Between Health Ratings Of Seventh And Eighth Grade School Children And Their Family Social And Economic Backgrounds, Brigham City, Utah, 1935-36, Ralph Jenson Jr.
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Especially during the last century the health of school children has been a problem of deep concern. Many physical examinations have been given by numerous organizations with the intention of discovering organic disorders that might be detrimental to a child's normal social life. As a result of such study, humanity has generally come to recognize the social and economic costs of ill-health and has embarked on remedial and preventive campaigns to improve the well-being of children. Foundations have been endowed. Free clinics have been established to serve those families whose incomes prohibit them from securing medical services otherwise; county, city …
The Microflora Of Milk Drawn Aseptically From The U.S.A.C. Dairy Herd, Lewis W. Jones
The Microflora Of Milk Drawn Aseptically From The U.S.A.C. Dairy Herd, Lewis W. Jones
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Early studies on the bacterial content of milk were made mainly to satisfy the interest of people who wished to determine the various materials that contained bacteris. Soon the value of bacterial counts, as an indication of the general conditions of production, of handling, and of the keeping qualities of milk, became evident and bacterial counts were used to obtain information concerning these problems. Numbers of bacteria in milk have been used also in the studies of the desirable and undesirable changes in milk.
In the last few years our citizenry has been made more conscious of the presence and …

The Plankton Of The Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Utah Seasonal Distribution Of Organisms, George Piranian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the summer of 1932, an investigation of some biological, physical, and chemical conditions at the Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Utah, was begun at the Utah State Agricultural College to determine some of the factors governing the biological productivity of brackish-water marshes. Unfortunately, lack of funds made it impossible to continue work beyond the first season.
In 1936, the Wild Life Experiment Station at the Utah State Agricultural College appropriated a fund for a cooperative project between the Station and the Department of Botany at the same institution. This project, planned to be continued by various graduate fellows over …

The Life History Of The Dewberry Fruit Worm Cacoecia Rosaceana (Harr.) In Utah, Merlin W. Allen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study has been to determine the identity and the life history of certain larvae attacking dewberry fruits and foliage in a few sections of Utah. The dewberry fruit worm as it was called until it was definitely identified the oblique-banded leaf-roller, was first observed by farmers at Granite and Butlerville in 1932. Since 1934 it has been found affecting dewberries in other parts of northern Utah.
This investigation was begun in the spring of 1935 and continued until the fall of 1936, being made possible through the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, Department of Entomology, and with …

Bulletin No. 275 - Types Of Farming In Utah, Marion Clawson, Walter U. Fuhriman, George T. Blanch, W. Preston Thomas
UAES Bulletins
A large portion of the agriculture of Utah, outside of the desert range areas, is characteristically heterogeneous rather than homogeneous in character. Marked differences in size of farm, in crops grown, in livestock kept, in yields, and in farm organization occur within short distances. This diversity is due in large measure to differences in soil, elevation, topography, and other physical features and to climatic characteristics such as amount, kind, and distribution of precipitation and length of growing season. The physical and climatic features are the chief determinants of the amount of water potentially available for the irrigation of the crop …

Bulletin No. 274 - Influence Of Rotation And Manure On The Nitrogen, Phosphorus, And Carbon Of The Soil, J. E. Greaves, C. T. Hirst
UAES Bulletins
All agricultural plants require carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, phosphorus, iron, and probably traces of other elements for their normal growth and fruition. The growth of farm crops is dependent upon an available supply of these elements, and the extent of growth is governed by the one present and available in least quantity in proportion to the plant's needs. Of the essential elements, all plants secure two (carbon and oxygen) from the air, one (hydrogen) from the water, and the others from the soil. Most soils contain sufficient plant nutrients for normal plant production, with the exception …

Project 90-A Study of Factors Influencing the Financial Condition of Certain Utah Irrigation and Drainage Projects-was undertaken in 1928 as an intensified study of local areas. This study was divided among four departments, with a project leader for each particular phase of the study. These four project leaders, guided by the Station Director, have constituted a committee in immediate charge of this project. Subprojects and their respective leaders have been: A-Engineering and Engineering Economic Aspects, O. W. Israelsen; B-Soil Productivity Aspects, D. S. Jennings; C-Contributing Sociological Aspects, J. A. Geddes; and D-Economic Aspects, W. Preston Thomas.

Bulletin No. 272 - Transmissibility Of Bang's Disease Among Dairy Cattle In A Utah Dairy Village, D. E. Madsen, O. G. Larsen
UAES Bulletins
For a number of years it has been generally recognized that one of the most satisfactory methods of controlling Bang's disease in dairy cattle is to locate spreaders by means of the agglutination test and to eliminate them from the herd. The success of such a plan in relation to Utah dairy herds was not clearly understood because of the physical farm set-up peculiar to many communities in this state. The village of Hyde Park where this study was made is organized on such a community basis. Usually, a house and livestock buildings are constructed on the town lot, consisting …

Riding the crest of the torrent of verbal altruism which flooded in the New Deal came a malnurtured little fellow, the consumer - the same timid, mistreated, gullible little fellow with the battered derby hat whom cartoonists have so aptly pictured on the stool peering meekly over the counter at the big bruiser, the producer, who stood behind it. Put now he was to be such rejuvenated personage. The hair shirt in which one writer has so smartly dressed him was to be miraculously transformed into finest armor of an impregnable protective alloy which was to be composed of numerous …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Today the under-privileged are by no means confined to the mentally and physically handicapped. Since 1929 the number has greatly increased because of our faulty economic and social organization. Many healthy men who are both able and willing to work have been forced into idleness because of inability to secure a position. Extension classes in "Mental Hygiene" and "Social Case Work" conducted under the direction of the head of the Sociology Department of the Utah State Agricultural College during 1934-35, decided to make a study of conditions actually existing among Ogden City's victims of the depression, with particular emphasis on …

Preferences Of A Group Of Nursery School Children At The Utah State Agricultural College For Colored Or Uncolored Picture Books, Verna S. Carlisle
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the last decade there has been manifest widespread interest in the development of children. Clinics, social agencies, and schools have made substantial contributions to our knowledge concerning children, their care, training, and growth. This is especially true of the pre-school child. Many studies have been made concerning his learning behavior, factors affecting his eating habits, his emotions, metor skills, intellectual development, and social behavior.
An Analytical Study Of Utah Verse To Determine What Utah Poetry Might Be Recommended For Study In Elementary And Secondary Utah Schools, Lawrence James Sorenson
An Analytical Study Of Utah Verse To Determine What Utah Poetry Might Be Recommended For Study In Elementary And Secondary Utah Schools, Lawrence James Sorenson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study has a primary and a secondary purpose. The primary purpose is to call attention to the question of whether or not Utah verse should be introduced for study into the elementary and secondary schools of Utah. The author does not want to imply that he will give a satisfactory answer to this question. He hopes, however, that this effort will emphasize the question and stimulate thought concerning the same. It seems reasonable to suppose that most of the Utah school officials who are concerned in any way with literary material for school curricula will agree that, if there …

A Survey Of Housing Conditions And Proposed Housing For The Utah State Agricultural College, Lenore Lewis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the most obvious as well as the most complex problems with which the Utah State Agricultural College has to deal is that of finding and keeping suitable living quarters for the students under its care. When the institution was small the matter was fairly easy to adjust. But with the extraordinarily rapid increase in the number of young people attending the college it has become a most perplexing problem.

Cereal grains were known to be notably deficient in the anti-rachitic principle even before the discovery of vitamin D. Clinicians had associated a type of rickets of infancy, characterized by an over-weight, flabby, bowlegged condition, with a diet consisting mainly of cereals. Mellanby (1) in 1921 concluded that this type of rickets is induced by overfeeding with carbohydrates. He also showed in the same report, however, that oatmeal, although it contains less carbohydrates than the other grains tested, possesses a special tendency toward rachitogenesis.

The Geology Of A Part Of The Bear River Range And Some Relationships That It Bears With The Rest Of The Range, Vic E. Peterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The structure of the western three or four miles of the Bear River range east of Logan, Utah, has many times been alluded to in papers written locally on Cache Valley and the related ranges. There has not however, ever been, to the author's knowledge, an investigation made of this portion of the range for the express purpose of determining its exact structure. Although the area specifically covered by this present investigation is greatly inadequate to base the whole west range structure on, the author believes that the facts brought to light by the specific study of this area, added …
