Bulletin No. 287 - Tests Of Corn Varieties And Hybrids In Utah, R. W. Woodward, D. C. Tingey, R. J. Evans
UAES Bulletins
The corn acreage in Utah is only about half that planted in barley and approximately one-fourth that sown to spring wheat. During the period 1910-30 this acreage was about equally divided into corn for grain, corn for silage, and corn fed to livestock in the field (table 1) . Since 1930 there has been a gradual increase in the acreage of corn grown for silage with the exception of the years 1936 and 1937.
Life History Of The Pale Western Cutworm Agrotis Orthogonia Morrison, Heber F. Thornley
Life History Of The Pale Western Cutworm Agrotis Orthogonia Morrison, Heber F. Thornley
Biology
The pale western cutworm Agrotis orthogonia Morr. Is a native insect of the arid-lands of western United States and Canada. Devastation of dry-land grains has marked the insect as the most destructive cutworm in the west. Because of the underground feeding habits of this insect the usual methods of control, so effective with the army cutworm and other cutworm species, have all failed.

Date Of Planting, Sugar Beet Varieties, And Insecticides As They Affect Beet Leafhopper Populations, Curly Top Disease, And Yields, Walter Edwin Peay
Biology
In the western United States for many years, curly top, a virus disease transmitted by the beet leafhopper, Eutettix tenellus (Baker), has caused serious economic damage to sugar beets, beans, tomatoes, and cucurbits, and in some years is a limiting factor in the production of these crops.

Weather And Plant-Development Data As Determinants Of Grazing Periods On Mountain Range, David F. Costello, Raymond Price
Weather And Plant-Development Data As Determinants Of Grazing Periods On Mountain Range, David F. Costello, Raymond Price
Aspen Bibliography
Fundamental in economical range-resource management is the determination of proper grazing periods. It is of prime importance to be able to establish a date in the spring when the range has produced sufficient feed to keep livestock in thrifty condition, when it is reasonably safe from excessive trampling and packing of the soil, and when the more important key forage plants have attained sufficient development to withstand grazing use. Such opening dates, as well as the time to defer and rotate grazing and to remove livestock from the range, are dependent in part on the prevailing weather conditions and on …
The Ecology Of Agropyron Inerme On Protected And Heavily Grazed Range Land In Cache Valley, Utah, Wallace R. Hanson
The Ecology Of Agropyron Inerme On Protected And Heavily Grazed Range Land In Cache Valley, Utah, Wallace R. Hanson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the past decade much attention has been attracted to the great range lands of the West. The inherently low productivity of these arid lands coupled with abnormal drought and constantly heavy use by livestock because of lack of grazing control, have caused these lands to become greatly depleted over most of the West. That the vegetation on most range land in the intermountain states is depleted appreciably is evident to the careful observer. Undoubtedly the vegetation of much of the range has decreased in quantity, but more serious in many cases is the decrease in quality. Valuable forage species …
A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of Acridinae Of Utah (Orthoptera-Locustidae), Herald C. Bennion
A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of Acridinae Of Utah (Orthoptera-Locustidae), Herald C. Bennion
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Orthoptera, especially the family Locustidae, is one of the most important and most interesting orders of insects in the state of Utah. It includes a polyphagus group of great economic importance in the state. The topography and climate of Utah varies from forested alpine slopes to hot arid desert wastes, several life zones being represented. This great variation from desert to alpine in Utah presents a rather unique region for taxonomic and ecological studies of the Orthoptera.
The most familiar representatives of the insect order Orthoptera are the long-horned grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, katydids, and cockroaches. Orthoptera are characterized by Comstock …

The Interests Of High School Boys In Logan, Utah, C. D. Mcbride
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
It is generally conceded by psychologists and educators that interest is the starting point for all learning. Effective application of this principle in educational procedure has, however, proved to be far more difficult than it at first appeared. It has given rise to varying types of schools, teaching methods, programs and practices. The activity program, the vitalized education program, the project method, the problem method, the child centered school, the play-and-learn program, and others have had, and still have, their champions and followers, all flying the banner of Dewey's "Interest and Effort" philosophy.
Teachers and educators generally talk freely about …
Some Factors Related To Student Achievement Of Entering Freshmen At The Utah State Agricultural College, James Francis Day
Some Factors Related To Student Achievement Of Entering Freshmen At The Utah State Agricultural College, James Francis Day
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The need for study in regard to factors related to student achievement and their possible application as guidance devices for entering freshmen in any college is very evident in our modern life. We have only to look at the increasing college enrollments and to the scarcity of positions for college graduates to realize this. In an effort to meet this need, educators should more and more base their practices on the findings of statistical and experimental studies.
That an improvement is needed in the technique used for the guidance of entering students at the Utah State Agricultural College is very …
A Study Of The Sage Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus), With Special Reference To Life History, Habitat Requirements, And Numbers And Distribution, Lynn A. Griner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The sage grouse or sage hen Centrocercus urophasianus (Bonaparte) was formerly the most important upland native game bird of the Western States, but has steadily been declining in numbers over most of its range in recent years. This reduction in numbers has aroused the interest of the conservationists of the nation, who, for the past decade or more, have been proposing that something be done for this game species. In recent years along with this interest of the conservationists, there has been an increasing local interest among the sportsmen of the West, with the result that several groups have become …
A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey
A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Preliminary unpublished work at the Salt Lake City Laboratory of the Division of Sugar Plant Investigations, Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, indicates that beets showing the Y color factor (9) were larger than sugar-beet types recessive for this color factor (y y). It was suggested to the writer that an investigation be made to determine whether or not yield and sugar content were correlated with color factors in beets. Linkages between the R and Y color factors have been reported by Keller (9), and the results indicate a close linkage between color factors R …

Glaciation In The Logan Quadrangle, Utah, J. Llewellyn Young
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
That the higher valleys of the Wasatch Mountains were occupied by Pleistocene glaciers has long been known. King, Hague, and Emmons, geologists of the Fortieth Parallel Survey, the first to undertake a systematic study of any part of the Wasatch Mountains, recognized this fact and their report includes a map which shows in a rough way the extent of the glaciated areas in the Central Wasatch (11 ). In 1909 Atwood (1) made a detailed study of the glacial features of the Central Wasatch in connection with his study of glaciation in the Uinta Mountains. He mapped the deposits of …
Trichomoniasis Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Dairy Herd, Rue Jensen
Trichomoniasis Of The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station Dairy Herd, Rue Jensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bovine trichomoniasis is a venereal infection that reduces the fecundity of cattle. It is caused by Trichomonas foetus (Riedmuller), a flagellated protozoan which inhabits the genital tract, causing inflammation and partial sterility. Both sexes are susceptible to infection. In females it is usually of short duration and frequently terminates spontaneously following abortion. In males the disease has both acute and chronic stages. During the acute stage the prepucial membranes become inflamed and a muco-purulent discharge develops in which trichomonads are abundant. In the following chronic stage symptoms disappear, but the animal remains a carrier and is a dangerous source of …

Bulletin No. 284 - Lygus Bugs In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Production, C. J. Sorenson
UAES Bulletins
This investigation, which continued during the two succeeding years, had four primary purposes: (1) to determine the distribution of these plant bugs and the intensity of their infestation in the alfalfa-seed districts of the state; (2) to ascertain whether these bugs constitute an important factor, either causing or contributing to, the excessive flower-drop annually occurring in alfalfa-seed fields, or if they are otherwise responsible for decreased yields of alfalfa seed; (3) to study the general biology of these insects with particular reference to their life histories in alfalfa as the host plant; and (4) to investigate possible practical methods for …

Bulletin No. 286 - Some Trends In Utah's Agriculture, Walter U. Fuhriman
UAES Bulletins
During the last two decades agriculture has been subjected to many strains and stresses- social, economic, physical, and biological. Infestations of noxious weeds and insect pests have in some instances necessitated changes in crops grown and in farming practices. Changes in precipitation have induced alternate expansion and contraction of cultivated acreage in certain areas. Improved machinery has reduced the demand for farm labor, caused shifts in crops grown and in farm population. Changes in dietary habits have increased the demand for some farm commodities and decreased the demand for others, while wide fluctuations in farm prices have wrought rapid changes …

UAES Bulletins
A resume of the First Half-Century of Research 1888 - 1938 at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station including the Biennial Report 1936 - 1938.
The Utah Agricultural Experiment Station in reaching the fiftieth year of its history can look back upon a brilliant record of achievement covering the practical as well as the more fundamental problems of agriculture in this arid state. The difficulties encountered in conquering deserts down through human history have demonstrated the mastery of man's spirit over his physical environment. Man's destiny to multiply, subdue, and replenish the earth cannot be accomplished by enjoying the fruits of …

Bulletin No. 280 - Sinusitis Of Turkeys And Its Treatment, D. E. Madsen
UAES Bulletins
Sinusitis has long been recognized as one of the barriers to profitable production of chicken products; and with the growth of commercial turkey production in the west its existence in this bird has become increasingly significant. In Utah areas considerable loss is encountered yearly from this disease in turkeys. This loss has prompted some investigations as to what measures may be adopted for its control.
