Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs May 1948

Insect Pests And Predators In Relation To Alfalfa Seed Setting In Southern Alberta And The Effects On These Insects Of Three Chlorinated Hydrocarbons, Gordon A. Hobbs

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa-insect investigations, because of necessity, had been neglected in the province of Alberta during the war years. Work was resumed on this project in the spring of 1946 by the writer.

So much progress has been made in the field of insect pest control since the advent of war-born chlorinated hydrocarbons, that it was thought advisable to design an experiment which would test under Alberta conditions the results obtained in Utah where most of this type of research had been previously carried out, and would thus serve to bring investigations in this part of Canada up to date.

The Effects Of Serial Testing Upon The Results Of The Standford-Binet Tests Of Intelligence, Betsey Rogers Mccullough May 1948

The Effects Of Serial Testing Upon The Results Of The Standford-Binet Tests Of Intelligence, Betsey Rogers Mccullough

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Revised Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale probably is the best instrument we now have for measuring the general intelligence of young people. Using this scale we can foretell to a large degree a child's future mental growth; and with this knowledge as an important part of the total knowledge needed for prediction, we can more scientifically plan his further education and his vocational choice.

An Analysis Of The Library Services Of Nine Selected Elementary Schools Of Northern Utah, Pearl J. Carter May 1948

An Analysis Of The Library Services Of Nine Selected Elementary Schools Of Northern Utah, Pearl J. Carter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the distinguishing features of the modern elementary school is a library. The changes in educational philosophy which have made the child rather than the lesson the center of interest have brought about new methods of teaching. The lesson now becomes a challenge to the child to seek out information from many sources: books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, maps, and visual aids. No longer does the more memorizing of a specific assignment mean successful education.

Stabilization Studies On Soil-Cement Mixtures For Experimental Lining-Logan Experimental Section--Logan, Utah, V.S. Meissner

Elusive Documents

A memorandum of Agreement has been written between the Soil Conservation Service and the Bureau of Reclamation, relative to the experimental installation of test section of soil-cement and asphaltic canal lining to determine their durability and permeability. These test sections are to be installed at the Experimental Station, Logan, Utah. The Bureau of Reclamation requests two types of soil for the soil-cement studies, a fine sandy soil, poorly graded with little or no silt (Classification Symbol SP) and a find sandy soil with excess silt (Classification Symbol SF-Silty). The gradation limits for these two soil types are shown of Figures …

Geological Studies In Utah, J. Stewart Williams Apr 1948

Geological Studies In Utah, J. Stewart Williams

Faculty Honor Lectures

Utah's thousands of square miles of mountains, plateaus, and i ~ desert basins exhibit a wide variety of geological features and offer the student of geology an endless series of challenging problems. The solution of some of these problems began nearly one hundred years ago with the surveys of the United States territories; the work continues today at a greatly accelerated rate with scores of professional geologists and advanced students in the field each summer. The writer and students under his direction have made some contributions to the solution of a few of these problems in the twelve years that …

Aspen Defiberization And Refining Of Product, Robert Craig Jr.

Aspen Bibliography

Because of the great demand for wood fiber and because there is an abundance of aspen available1/ for this purpose, its conversion into a usable fiberized material offers possibilities. It also affords an outlet for low-quality bolts developed in any aspen logging operation or from land of poor quality.

Bulletin No. 330 - Peach Orchard Soil Mangement Studies, A. L. Stark, D. W. Thorne Feb 1948

Bulletin No. 330 - Peach Orchard Soil Mangement Studies, A. L. Stark, D. W. Thorne

UAES Bulletins

Peaches are the most important fruit crop in Utah. The total number of peach trees is greater and the volume of fruit produced for market is larger than of any other fruit. Most of the peaches are produced by a large number of growers who have small plantings. These small orchards contribute substantially to the total income of the growers and it is, therefore, important that maximum yields of high quality fruit be obtained from limited acreage.

A survey of the fruit production problems in Utah reported in 1938 (13) indicated that poor soil management practices were important in contributing …

Bulletin No. 329 - Cost And Efficiency Of Producing Sugar Beets In Utah, 1945, Ernest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

Early in the history of Utah the pioneers became interested in sugar-beet production. In 1852 John Taylor, Elias Morris and others, under the direction of Brigham Young, obtained machinery from France for refining beet sugar, transported it across the Atlantic Ocean by boat, up the Mississippi River to Fort Leavenworth, and thence across the plains to Utah by ox teams. The factory was established in what is now known as Sugar House in the southeastern part of Salt Lake City. These initial efforts proved to be unsuccessful primarily because the "open kettle" method employed was never satisfactory.

Bulletin No. 332 - Cost And Efficiency Of Celery Production In Box Elder And Utah Counties In 1945 And 1947, Earnest M. Morrison

UAES Bulletins

The production of celery by farmers in Utah has undergone important changes in the past five or six years. The most notable have been centered around the introduction of the new green type (Pascal) celery. The methods of production have advanced rapidly, the quality of the product has been greatly improved, the yield per acre has been increased at least twofold, and the acreage has been expanded.

With the growing impetus of the industry have come requests for information on cost and return to the farmer and for an analysis of other economic and physical factors associated with the industry. …

Chemical Utilization Of Aspen, Geo J. Ritter, Ralph L. Hossfeld Dec 1947

Chemical Utilization Of Aspen, Geo J. Ritter, Ralph L. Hossfeld

Aspen Bibliography

Chemical utilization of raw materials depends largely on the chemical composition and the chemical and physical properties of the raw materials under consideration. The utilization of wood is no exception to this principle. Thus, a wood having a low percentage of cellulose is uneconomical as a source of wood sugar or pulp for paper; and one of an excessively knotty character is undesirable for chemical conversion Woods having several undesirable characteristics generally fall within the classification of species little used for the purpose. Fortunate! aspen falls outside this class.

Aspen Lumber For Building Purposes, Louis W. Rees Dec 1947

Aspen Lumber For Building Purposes, Louis W. Rees

Aspen Bibliography

Recent shortages of lumber for building purposes make it desirable to seek out all possible supplies of additional lumber. Aspen, according to a study made in northern Minnesota during 1944, 1/ may be a source of lumber largely untapped. The results of that study are the main basis of this paper.

Seasoning Of Aspen, Harvey H. Smith Nov 1947

Seasoning Of Aspen, Harvey H. Smith

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen is nor; the major forest type in the Lake States, and extensive stands are reaching maturity. Increasing quantities are being cut, and much is nor; being put to new and more exacting uses that require better air - seasoning and kiln-drying practices. The recent favorable market for green aspen lumber appears to be falling off, and the time may soon come when operators are no longer able to move green aspen. Such a change can be met by manufacturing better-quality aspen lumber and by carefully seasoning it to the desired moisture content to make it more acceptable. This report …

Machining And Related Properties Of Aspen, Edward M. Davis Nov 1947

Machining And Related Properties Of Aspen, Edward M. Davis

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen occupies 20 million acres of Lake States timber land, or 39 percent of the total forest area. In 1945 there were 6 1/3 billion feet of aspen saw timber 9 inches d.b.h. and larger, and a larger cubic volume of smaller material. The cut of aspen lumber was 152 million board feet in 1946, and the forest could sustain a much larger annual cut.

Aspen For Pulp And Paper, E. R. Schafer Oct 1947

Aspen For Pulp And Paper, E. R. Schafer

Aspen Bibliography

Although the use of hardwoods for pulp and paper manufacture has increased considerably during recent years in the Lake States, the pulpwood consumed in this region consists largely of softwood species of which about one quarter is obtained from foreign sources. The wood resource, on the other hand, is comprised to a large extent of hardwoods, predominantly aspen, with the maples, oaks, and several other species available in lesser amounts. The present stand of aspen in the Lake States is estimated at nearly 20 million acres with a total volume of merchantable timber of about 32 1/2 million cords. The …

Milling Of Aspen Into Lumber, C. J. Telford, F. B. Malcolm

Aspen Bibliography

In the manufacture of aspen lumber, the costs of stumpage and logging approximate 65 per cent of the total, and milling and sales 35 per cent. Milling efficiency is essential, but by itself it is not assurance of a profitable operation.
