Aspen For Cabin Logs, Albert W. Sump Sep 1947

Aspen For Cabin Logs, Albert W. Sump

Aspen Bibliography

A plentiful supply of pine and cedar logs provided the early settlers of this country with a cheap and durable material for the construction of their homes and farm buildings. Only the axe and the ingenuity of the pioneer were needed to erect a shelter against the elements of nature. Early in the 19th century, the circular saw came into use resulting in a change in building construction. The pine stands in New England and in the Lake States, considered inexhaustible in the 19th century, were converted to lumber to construct buildings necessary for the rapid development of the country. …

Aspen For Core Stock, Arlie W. Toole Sep 1947

Aspen For Core Stock, Arlie W. Toole

Aspen Bibliography

During recent years, aspen has been used in the Lake States region for a number of products. The war years in particular showed a marked increase in the use of aspen for pulpwood, box lumber, and many other wood products. The annual cut of aspen lumber in the region increased from approximately 67 million board feet in 1941 to 152 million board feet in 1946. In spite of this increased use, aspen still remains the only major tree species in the Lake States in which annual growth exceeds annual drain. It represents the major forest resource in this region that …

Aspen For Containers, Waldo Sands Jul 1947

Aspen For Containers, Waldo Sands

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen, because of its abundance in the Lake States, merits special consideration as to future management, utilization, and marketing. Although aspen lumber is used for many purposes, its chief use during the past decade has been for containers (boxes and crates). It gained its greatest prominence as container material during World War II.

Both producers and users of containers need general information as to availability and supply of aspen, its properties and usefulness for container material. With that in mind, this report on the use of aspen for containers has been prepared.

Mechanical Properties Of Aspen, R. P. A. Johnson Jul 1947

Mechanical Properties Of Aspen, R. P. A. Johnson

Aspen Bibliography

The clear wood of aspen has inherent properties of merit. Several of these properties are familiar to a large proportion of the general public, for some of the common types of matches are made of this wood. The requirements of wood for matches are exacting in that the wood must combine straightness of grain, ease of splitting, ease of working, and toughness To meet such rigid requirements, a wood must be suitable for other uses as well. The fact that aspen is not used more widely for other purposes lies not in the wood itself but in other factors, such …

Possibilities Of Managing Aspen, Paul Zehngraff Jun 1947

Possibilities Of Managing Aspen, Paul Zehngraff

Aspen Bibliography

The management of aspen or popple (Populus tremuloides) has received little attention in the past, largely because of the former abundant supply of other and more valuable tree species in the Lake States. Be- cause of a rapidly expanding market for all forest products during the past decade, particularly during the war, the attention and ingenuity of industry have turned toward the use of aspen. As a consequence, aspen has now become one of the important pulpwood species in the Lake States, and is used for many other products. That it will retain its place for some time to come …

Aspen Availability And Supply, Clarence D. Chase Jun 1947

Aspen Availability And Supply, Clarence D. Chase

Aspen Bibliography

A knowledge of the total and available supply of aspen is basic to a study of the aspen situation. Hence, this paper aims to show the relative position of aspen2/ as a commercial forest type in the Lake States region, both currently and potentially. The data on areas, volumes, and growth are taken from the Forest Survey made in 1933-37, brought up to January 1, 1945, by office calculations including drain studies. Areas by site quality, allowable cut calculations, and volumes of timber available (1945 to I960) are the best estimates that can be made at this time.

A Study Of A Heron Nesting Colony, Linden J. Leatham May 1947

A Study Of A Heron Nesting Colony, Linden J. Leatham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Herons are well known because of their gregarious nesting habits. Like many others of the lower orders of birds they nest together in pure or mixed colonies of many different combinations and under diverse living conditions. The population of different colonies may vary from a few pairs to many thousands of pairs depending upon the nature and extent of the breeding area, the food supply available and the protection afforded either by natural or artificial means.

In Utah and adjacent areas of bordering states, many types of heron associations have been studied and reported by ornithological workers. Breeding colonies of …

A Study Of The Content And Administration Of Intramural Sports Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, Byrne C. Fernelius

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Intramural sports appeared in schools long before interscholastic athletics. Students within schools formed clubs and competed against one another. This student intramural competition increased until in 1915 Michigan and Ohio State each inaugurated a department of intramural athletics under the direction of one man. In 1915 John Wilce wrote the first treatise on intramural sports. In the army camps of World War I this type of intramural activity received a tremendous boost. In 1925 the high schools throughout the country began organizing intramural departments.

By 1941 the enthusiasm of physical education instructors for a comprehensive intramural program had become so …

A Comparison Of Price Differentials In The Chain And Independent Grocery Stores Of Logan, Utah, David C. Bacon May 1947

A Comparison Of Price Differentials In The Chain And Independent Grocery Stores Of Logan, Utah, David C. Bacon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

  1. This study is the result of two separate surveys of the retail grocery stores in Logan, Utah. The primary purpose of these surveys was to make a detailed study of price differentials as they exist between the stores of different kind, class, location and size.
  2. Logan was chosen for this survey for a number of reasons: (1) It is typical of many Rocky Mountain cities for size. (2) There is no one industry that completely dominates the economy of the city. (3) There are sufficient stores in kind and number to give the necessary data. (4) Besides the local independent …

The Measurement Of Agricultural Production In The Utah From 1920 To 1946, Owen L. Brough Jr. May 1947

The Measurement Of Agricultural Production In The Utah From 1920 To 1946, Owen L. Brough Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As agricultural leaders become increasingly aware of the economics involved in the production and marketing of agricultural products, there develops an increased need for more accurate and more complete methods of measuring agricultural production. This need is not only for the satisfactory measurement of the physical production of a given crop, but is also for a unit of measurement that will make possible a comparison of the production of individual enterprises and groups of enterprises for a given year and from year to year. Because the production of many crops, and livestock and livestock products are customarily measured according to …

An Evaluation Of The Practices And Functions Of The Clerk Of The Board Of Education In The State Of Utah, Dean C. Andrew

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Regardless of the size, the school district has some person who is responsible for keeping the clerical and financial records of the school district. This position is very frequently designated as the office of the clerk of the board of education. When the efficient clerk assumes the clerical and financial duties of the school district the superintendent is relieved of endless details, which allows him greater opportunity to perform those functions for which he is qualified, thus a smoother and a more efficient school system is the result. It has been thought in the past that any person regardless of …

A Farm Management Study Of Dairy Farms In Duchesne County, Utah, 1945, Melvin M. Peterson May 1947

A Farm Management Study Of Dairy Farms In Duchesne County, Utah, 1945, Melvin M. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The kinds of agricultural commodities grown in an area result largely from the physical, economic, and institutional setting of the area. Seldom does one factor alone determine the kind of production. The nature of the soil, the amount and the distribution of the precipitation, the topography of the area, and the length of the frost-free growing period are all important. Likewise, location with respect to markets and means of transportation is important, as are also the ownership of the land, the size of the farms, and the balance among the factors of production.

In Duchesne County the physical factors, location, …

Membership Relations Of The Utah Poultry And Farmers' Cooperative, Glen T. Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Commercial egg production in Utah has developed gradually since 1920. Production of eggs increased from 142 million in 1924 to 433 million eggs in 1946. The percentage of total farm income of the state derived from the poultry industry increased from 5.3 percent in 1924 to 23.1 percent in 1946 and at the present time constitutes the largest income of any farm enterprise in this area. Factors influencing this development are: 1. High prices resulting from the war period of 1917 to 1920 followed by the depression period when prices were low. 2. The organization of cooperative egg-marketing associations. 3. …

The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent May 1947

The Cost Of Producing Eggs And The Egg Feed Ratio In Utah 1929-'46, Emer E. Broadbent

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Commercial egg production in Utah has developed largely since 1920. Prior to that time most farms had some chickens but the eggs were either used at home or consumed on the local markets. What few commercial poultry farms there were also supplied local markets. It has been estimated that the total egg production in the stat was just about equal to the consumption within the state. Soon after1920 however, egg production on a commercial basis began and thereafter expanded rapidly for a time.

Variable Factors In The Determination Of Fat And Moisture In Cheddar Cheese, William C. Winder May 1947

Variable Factors In The Determination Of Fat And Moisture In Cheddar Cheese, William C. Winder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The rapid growth of the dairy industry which began in the latter half of the nineteenth century necessitated the development of chemical tests for determining the composition of dairy products. Chemists devoted much study and labor in devising methods which would be both accurate and rapid. As a result of these researches a large number of tests were developed. Many of the methods possessed considerable merit and a few were so satisfactory that the rest did not come into general use. The basic principles of all the tests now in use were discovered between 1880 and 1890.

Cost Of Producing Peaches In Washington County And Box Elder-Weber Area, 1947, Wells M. Allred

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Peach production in Utah is an important enterprise. In 1946 the crop of 700,000 bushels was valued at $1,085,000, which was approximately one percent of the value of all agricultural commodities grown in the state 1/. The estimate average annual production over the ten-year period, 1936 to 1945, was 636,000 bushels. About 95 percent of the peach trees are located in Washington County and along the Wasatch Front in Utah, Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, and Box Elder counties. Small-scale family type units characterize the production of peaches in Utah. The 5,071 farmers who reported growing peach trees in 1944 had …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Scolytidae (Coleoptera) Of The Logan Canyon Area Of Utah, Stephen L. Wood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In spite of the great economic importance of north American Scolytidae, many taxonomic descriptions remain inadequate for the identification of species, and existing keys have been made obsolete by the recent description of new species. To bring these keys up to date and make them useful to students and practical foresters, detailed studies of the morphological structure of the various species are necessary. The purpose of the present investigation has been to clarify and revise existing keys and to describe briefly the species of Scolytidae occurring in the Logan Canyon area of Utah. The following keys and descriptions will be …

An Evaluation Of Non-Directive Counseling In The Treatment Of Delinquents, George D. Watt May 1947

An Evaluation Of Non-Directive Counseling In The Treatment Of Delinquents, George D. Watt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It was the purpose of this study to make application of Carl H. Rogers' non-directive method of psychotherapy in the treatment of juvenile delinquents. The study was set up in an effort to determine the value of such a treatment procedure as one method of treating this type of individual.

The hypothesis to be tested was that non-directive psychotherapy would improve the personal and social adjustment of institutionalized delinquents. Supporting this general assumption the following three corollaries were assumed: (1) that improved personal adjustment would be reflected in adjustment inventories, (2) that improved social behavior would be reflected in social …
