Productivity Of Cropland In Cache County, Utah, Quentin M. West
Productivity Of Cropland In Cache County, Utah, Quentin M. West
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order for land to best serve the present and future generations it should be put into the use for which it is best adapted. To determine the proper use of land, the factors which influence its use, such as soil, climate, and location, should be studied. Then the land should be classified as to its most economic use, based on these factors.
In Cache County there is much work to be done toward a classification of the land. An ideal study; not limited by time nor expense; would include a complete study of all the factors associated with land-use. …
Emergence And Survival Of Four Introduced Wheatgrasses As Influenced By Rate And Season Of Planting On Abandoned Farm Lands Of Utah, Donald N. Hyder
Emergence And Survival Of Four Introduced Wheatgrasses As Influenced By Rate And Season Of Planting On Abandoned Farm Lands Of Utah, Donald N. Hyder
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A great deal has been accomplished in developing methods of restoring abused lands through seeding, yet there is much to be desired in refinement of techniques and in substantiation of previous experimental results. Controversial opinions as to the best season of planting indicate that additional trials are needed. New species need to be introduced, developed, and proved. Methods are needed which lead to more efficient utilization of those factors limiting the degree of success in establishment. Since moisture is the most predominant limiting factor throughout the arid and semi-arid range land, special attention is given to more efficient utilization of …
A Study Of Farm Mechanics On Typical Farms In The North Cache High School District, Clifford G. Hansen
A Study Of Farm Mechanics On Typical Farms In The North Cache High School District, Clifford G. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The farmers of today are faced with many more and varied problems than were their grandfathers. This is in part due to the rapid mechanization of farming that has been developing during the past three decades. This movement for increased mechanization in farming presents a new challenge to farmers because of their responsibility in caring for farm machinery and maintaining it in an efficient operating condition. In effect, this means that the efficient farmer must devote an increasing amount of time and attention to the managerial and operative skills connected with mechanized farming. Moreover, he must acquire tools and equipment …
Teaching Combinations Of The Men Teachers Of Physical Education In The Public High Schools Of Utah, Earl G. Holmstead
Teaching Combinations Of The Men Teachers Of Physical Education In The Public High Schools Of Utah, Earl G. Holmstead
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The almost universal acceptance of physical education as an integral part of education has resulted in state legislation throughout the United States requiring the teaching of physical education in the public schools. Because of this legislation, it has become necessary to better prepare teachers to carry on a worthwhile physical education program. Efficient teaching cannot be expected to result from lack of training and inadequate preparation; therefore, the college graduate who holds a degree with no specialized training is not adequately prepared to teach effectively and efficiently in our school systems of today.

An Evaluation Of Trout Stocking In The Logan River Drainage, Nels Andrew Thoreson
An Evaluation Of Trout Stocking In The Logan River Drainage, Nels Andrew Thoreson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
One of the more important forms of recreation in Utah is fishing. Each year since the end of World War II more than 100,000 resident and 4,000 non-resident fishermen have taken to the streams and lakes of this state. They spend approximately $2,200,000 each year in the quest of fish, mostly trout. In 1916, 25,473 licenses were sold, in 1937 the number of licenses had risen to 41,200, in 1945 the sales amounted to 104,000 and in 1947 had increased to nearly 131,000. Because of the increased number of fishermen each year, the desirability of greater numbers of legal-sized fish …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the past fifty years physical education has emphasized such objectives as strength, health, recreation and education. Emphasis in physical education has been influenced by educational, economic and political conditions.
As a result of these influences, the physical education programs have gone through various stages of development and change. During certain periods we have had calisthenics, dance, sports, games, and various combinations of these activities. During the past few years, leaders in the field have endeavored to effect a program of study in physical education to be used as a guide for teachers in that profession.

A Study Of The 1947 American Council On Education Psychological Examination And Its Usefulness In Predicting The Grades Of Utah State Agricultural College Freshmen, Russell B. Bateson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Prediction of future performance is attempted in almost every field of endeavor. The accuracy varies in different lines of study, and perhaps none is as subject to variability as those attempted with human beings as subjects.
When an attempt is made to ascertain in advance the performance of college students in their schoolwork, a multiplicity of complicating problems are introduced. Whereas intelligence can be fairly well isolated, it is difficult to control or even enumerated all the other factors that come into the problem of predicting grades from scores received on an intelligence examination. Among the factors that are difficult …
A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups
A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Barley (Hordrium sp.) is the most important spring sown cereal crop in Utah, both in acreage and in yield of total digestible nutrients per unit area. It also rates high as a feed crop in the United States. For this reason it is important that varieties are available which are high in yield, high in quality, and disease resistant, along with other desirable characteristics. In order to work toward this end most efficiently, it is first necessary that the genetics of the barley plant be worked out.
Seed And Forage Production In Four Clonal Lines Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Lygus Infestation, John Keith Noyes
Seed And Forage Production In Four Clonal Lines Of Alfalfa As Influenced By Lygus Infestation, John Keith Noyes
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
No other forage crop cultivated in the United States can be used in as many ways as alfalfa. The variety of its uses make it a most useful forage crop.
The distribution of alfalfa is world wide and it plays a leading role in the production of livestock and their products. For general feeding of farm animals, alfalfa is unsurpassed. Used for pasture, it has a high capacity, which leads to large gains in grasing animals. If properly rotated and cared for, it adds nitrogen to the soil in a form that is available to plants and thereby increases crop …

Potassium is one of the essential plant nutrient elements. It is used by plants in the synthesis and distribution of carbohydrates (25)2 and in the formation of proteins and oils. Potassium also seems to exert many of its effects by influencing enzymatic activity in cells.
Potassium occurs as the monovalent cation on plant cells and undoubtedly exerts important effects upon such phnomona as the permiability of the cytoplasmic membranes and hydration of protoplasma. Plants assimilate potassium either from the soil solution or directly from the exchange complex.
The Comparative Value Of Commercial Phosphoric Acid As A Fertilizer, Bruce L. Baird
The Comparative Value Of Commercial Phosphoric Acid As A Fertilizer, Bruce L. Baird
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The practice of applying fertilizers to the soil by adding the liquid form to the irrigation water is increasing in popularity. There are several advantages maintained for such a method of application. Some of the advantages are:
(A) Ease of application.
(B) No special equipment is required for application.
(C) The fertilizer can be applied at any stage of plant growth without physical disturbance of the plant.
(D) Penetration into the root zone may be greater than the dry fertilizers.
Considerable phosphate fertilizer is used on soils of irrigated regions. If the behavior of liquid phosphoric acid after its incorporation …

Supply And Demand Of Secondary School Teachers In Utah, George W. Sperry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the years of World War II the faculties of the public schools in Utah, as well as in the rest of the nation, were depleted to a serious extent, and enrollment in teacher training institutions throughout the country decreased. Because of this condition the State Department of Education in Utah as well as in other states was forced to issue letters of authorization to teachers who could not meet standard certification requirements in order to staff the schools. Many of these teachers are still teaching today.

Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray
Some Factors Associated With The Economic Feasibility Of Reseeding Privately-Owned Cattle Ranges In Utah, James R. Gray
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The forage depletion of western ranges which has occurred during the past century is partly the result of the belief by ranchers that the forage loss was temporary and not serious. Should more forage of a high quality be desired they thought it could be produced by reseeding the ranges. The native western forages, never abundant or luxurious by eastern concepts, nevertheless were of generally high qualities. Limited by low and erratically distributed precipitation, the sparse native forages have in many areas given way to low quality plants. These plants of low quality do not have to withstand the adverse …

The Professional Preparation And Teaching Assignments Of Industrial Arts Teachers In Utah, 1948-49, Lewis Harding
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Industrial Arts is a modern-day school subject which has grown rapidly in the last four decades. At the present time it holds a very important place in the curriculum of the modern school. Throughout the period of this growth, from its first adoption into the American public school system in 1880, until the present time, its objectives or aims have undergone continual change. During that early period after it was first accepted in the United States, its aims were of a practical nature and it was supposed to give vocational training. At the present time leaders are striving to have …
Inheritance Studies In Stem Rust Of Wheat, Sayed Bad Shah
Inheritance Studies In Stem Rust Of Wheat, Sayed Bad Shah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wheat is an important food crop of the world, especially in Soviet Russia, U.S.A., China, India and Pakistan. Over one billion bushels of wheat are produced annually in U.S.A. The total area under wheat production in Pakistan during 1947-48 was 10 million acres with an average yield of 12 bushels per acre.
The stem rust disease has been known for along time to be destructive to grain crops, even centuries before the Christian era. Rust is of major importance in both the U.S. and Pakistan. Jethro Tull recorded rust in England in 1725. In 1916, rust was serious over the …
The Effect Of Time, Quantity, And Kind Of Irrigation On The Yield Of Sugar Beets, Delos Boyd Archibald
The Effect Of Time, Quantity, And Kind Of Irrigation On The Yield Of Sugar Beets, Delos Boyd Archibald
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Investigations on factors affecting yield of sugar beets during the past two years at Newton and Garland, Utah, have shown two outstanding facts about irrigating sugar beets. First, the amount of water applied may not be as important as the time at which they receive it. Second, sugar beets should not be made to suffer for water in the early part of their growing season.
These observations suggest the need for further studies on method, time and quantity of irrigation. Further information on the most economical use of irrigation water for sugar beets would be of great value to the …
The Effects Of Fertilizer And Moisture On The Yield Of Sweet Corn, Rex F. Nielson
The Effects Of Fertilizer And Moisture On The Yield Of Sweet Corn, Rex F. Nielson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Sweet corn is rapidly becoming an important cash crop in many of the irrigated regions of the intermountain West. The lacome from this crop is relatively small in comparison to that from other major agricultural products; however, sweet corn production has a definite place in the economy of the region.
One of the factors limiting increasing acreage of sweet corn in many areas is low yields. Yields have been increased naterially in recent years with the development of hybrid varieties, superior to the standard varieties previously used. Better cultural practices are improving yields, but much remains to be done in …
A Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Treating Milk For Cheddar Cheese Making, Mounir Ramzi Nagmoush
A Comparative Study Of Hydrogen Peroxide In Treating Milk For Cheddar Cheese Making, Mounir Ramzi Nagmoush
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In many countries of the world and in some parts of the United States milk is produced which has a high bacterial contamination. Such milk of undesirable quality is frequently delivered to factories engaged in the manufacture of cheddar cheese. This milk commonly contains large numbers of lactic acid-producing bacteria or other types of microorganisms which cause objectionable flavors and textural defects in the cheese. The improvement of the quality of milk supply under some conditions is a matter of great difficulty so that the manufacture of inferior quality milk into cheese is a problem often encountered.

Design Of Shallow Wells For Drainage By Pumping, Lewiston Area, Utah, Gregory L. Pearson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
After approximately 25 years of using open drains in the Lewiston Area, Utah, the water table has not changed appreciably from what it was in 1921 when Hart and Adams (4) conducted their drainage investigations. It is still only about three feet below the ground surface. This is not effective drainage, meeting neither of the two primary drainage requirements of an arid or semi-arid agricultural region, namely; preventing an accumulation of excessive water within the depth of soil required for optimum growth of plant root systems, and maintaining the water table at a depth below the ground surface greater than …
Institution Building In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes
Institution Building In Utah, Joseph A. Geddes
Faculty Honor Lectures
The slow growth of civilization and the early meagerness of tested knowledge in any but the most pressing and practical matters undoubtedly conditioned and determined the nature of primitive collective thinking. Large assumptions had to be made about all things. Trial and error methods were slow methods. Only in his late maturity as knowledge multiplied has man found ways of testing the validity of an hypothesis so that assumption-making could become a tool of advancement rather than a controlling mechanism. Superstition, a large component in the culture of even the most advanced peoples, was an inevitable adjunct of progress. As …

The need for drainage in Utah was widely recognized before 1900, resulting in passage of a drainage district law in 1896 and provision for cooperative drainage research beginning in 1904. The drainage district laws, developed and improved during the half-century ending 1948, have served as the major basis for drainage organization in the state.

During the past biennium there has been a general expansion in the research program of the Agricultural Experiment Station. This was made possible through increased state legislative appropriation and through federal funds made available by the Agricultural Research and Marketing Act which passed Congress in August 1946, although funds were not available until August 1947. Grants-in-aid by state and private agencies have also made other research possible.
